What I love about all your vids, Aimee, is how you invite us all into your home/studio as if we are old friends. You have such a nice, welcoming and friendly personality. And on one of your vids you even let us sit in on one of your teaching sessions with a young lady student who plays beautiful improvised melodies and sings angelically. I play classical piano (though certainly not at an advanced level) and it's always been a fact that most of my heroes are female; Martha Argerich, Valentina Lisitsa, Yuga Wang, Mitsuko Uchido and others too numerous to mention. The fact that they have smaller hands than their male counterparts doesn't deter them from playing scores which require them to reach tenths and elevenths, or more, without having to continually use broken chords or arpeggios. I find this amazing. How does somebody with small hands play Rachmaninoff or Chopin or Prokofiev? But they do! I always notice how they keep their beautiful fingers high, so obviously they had good teachers when they were young. I have no doubt whatever that you play classical music beautifully, Aimee. I wonder who your favourite composers are. And which female jazzers you enjoy most. x

Sorry, dude, but I hear this kind of bullshit often from classical musicians. If you play a difficult classical piece and someone says to you: "You're a genius, I would never be able to play such a complicated piece!", you of course would answer: "No genius involved at all - I just practiced my ass off for many years to get where I am now." Because that's how it simply is! The EXACT SAME with us jazz musicians! No genius secrets!

Great life 101 lesson about listening, Aimee . . . I think your tip about asking a Q after someone has finished stating their thought is gold. Being a sensitive listener will pay huge dividends when we are having a musical "conversation" with another musician in an ensemble too : )

Thanks so much for sharing! I have taught the same methodology to my students. Once they realize that an improv is a thought and not a rambling of notes the result is something memorable. I always like to cite famous songs and their guitar solos such as Bohemian Rhapsody for example. Anyone who knows that song can sing the solo just as they would any vocal part. That is because Brian May is having a conversation with the listener through his instrument. I also like to cite how the V7 chord is the "suspense" to your story line. Which is then answered with the resolution to the I. Sort of a question/answer conversation. Keep sharing your great insights!

This time i listened to your lesson stoned and also this was a lesson in particular id needed to see for a while and it was a game changer in my confidence with note choice. What I love the most about your lessons is how you explain things because it is a lot like how i think when it comes to my music. I think we have a similiar approach and this is something I have been looking for for a while. Whenever Id pay for lessons or look lessons up they never really explained how to make music, it would be very handicapped for example just how to play a particular song, or even some theory but nothing too useful.

Great lesson and technique. I’m a fairly new adult student. I’m a chord and melody learner. Bought a Yamaha Clavinova. It has a chord looper that I can set up the chords and it plays them over and over. I sort of understand that the improv should be with the notes of that chord being played at that time, or is it the entire scale that is available to me? I’m having a very hard time thinking outside of the box. Thanks
