I met Shawn in Memphis about a year before this show. I was at Strings and Things looking around. Shawn came in to pick up a couple of custom Ibanez they were holding for him. I think they were RG's if I remember correctly. He plugged into a rack "fridge" that was set up and proceeded to tear s**t up. And when I say tear s**t up, I mean s**t went sideways. Like Forrest Gump rain. Straight cold off the street with no warm up. At the time I had seen about every top tier rock/metal guitarist there was. I have to say Shawn was better cold than many of the "world's best" were warmed up. Unfortunately I never got to see Shawn do a full show. But I did get to see him just jam for about 30 minutes from about 7 feet away. I will never forget that.

This man was the Jaco Pastorius of guitar. A down-to-Earth cat who sounded like he was from another dimension. The amount of respect that he showed to Indian and Pakistani music is also something to behold. Folks in 2022 and beyond could stand to learn a thing or two from Shawn Lane.
@flame-sky714811 ай бұрын
Yep, he's in the same spirit of Jaco. Not having any musical prejudice being open to different forms of music. Same dude, both had 2 studio albums and 1 live album while living. Jaco's "best" stuff was with WR, while Lanes "best" stuff was with HLS. Jaco was respected more in Japan, while Shawn got more respect in India.

3:20 begins one of the craziest and most amazing guitar solos of all time and around 3:55 then he hits a chorus pedal or something a few seconds later. Whatever it is, it’s one of the craziest things my ears have ever experienced! It begins the rest of the solo he does which lasts forever and he plays with a ridiculous amount of melodic authority. The song is called Throwing Elephant and Wrestling. Shawn Lane was a true musical savant.

username342 To be honest with you I'd not heard of him before you'd mentioned him. So I've listened to his music and I'm quite familiar with his playing now... He plays well, he plays guitar with enthusiasm... However when it comes to placing him on the level of Shawn Lane he's not at that level... I feel Shawn was in a class of his own. You could practice for many years and not be able to play like Shawn! Take, John petrucci. Paul Gilbert. Buckhead. Andy Timmons. Guthrie Govan... Are just a few awesome guitarists who openly say he was the guy!! Even they can't replicate his playing!! You could practice for many years and not be able to replicate his style. But with Jason his level is obtainable, practice for a year or so and you'd be able to play just like Jason... That's no mockery it's my honest opinion!! And you'd understand the guitar aswell so you can put your own flavour!!
@redhotkido6 жыл бұрын
I think more and more people are figuring it out, but yeah its hard shit. Not many "get it"....and it makes sense. Its not a bad thing either. Shawn Lane, Greg Howe, Frank gambale and Holdswoth, or anyone whose name is on a "guitar on the edge" album were playing things that were never heard on a guitar. The technique is very tough(and there's a ton of it), but are also all this other stuff and understanding going on which makes things even harder. Its not only about practicing a lot of hours.. It makes perfect sense that very few ever get to that level.....

This is my comment when I shared this video on Facebook and sums up how I feel about Shawn Lane and his band: Shawn Lane is one of the few guitarists/musicians that literally bring tears to my eyes when I listen to him, and gone far too soon at age 40 ( in 2003 born on March 21st 1963 the same day as J.S. Bach ! ) Anyhow, I recently discovered this video from a Clinic he did at Atlanta Institute Of Music with 2/3rds Of The Jonas Helborg ( bassist from Mahavishnu Orchestra) Trio including the incredible Jeff Sipe ( AKA Apartment Q 258 ) on drums and Paul Taylor filling in for Jonas ( Paul is also from Memphis like Shawn ) The whole clinic is awesome and worth watching especially when Shawn demonstrates Indian scales on keyboards and vocals, but the highlight for me is around the one hour and fifteen minute mark when they play the title track from Jonas’ album Abstract Logic that featured Kofi Baker ( son of Ginger Baker from Cream who also played with Chris Poland from Megadeth’s fusion band Ohm ) on drums, Shawn’s solos are tear jerking on this song! Shawn has that Memphis blues/jazz soul that has shades of Jimi Hendrix but mixed with the legato style technicality of Allan Holdsworth ( another guitarist that brings tears to my eyes and also gone too soon but led a longer life than Shawn ) I think Shawn was more effective as a jazz/fusion guitarist than as a shred guitarist on his first solo album Powers of Ten but all his work is also worth checking out imo as he is that rare talent that only comes along once in a lifetime so may he RIP! If anybody is interested in collaborating with me in a fusion project the likes of Holdsworth/Lane either locally ( Cleveland) or long distance please PM me!

The Memphis Monster that shattered every note with his speed and virtuoso. Glad that Mr. Lane explained the Hellborg/Shrieve Two Doors album debacle with his Warner Bros. contract issue. I wish Jonas would have been able to release that album separately on his Bardo record label. That portion of the album are the staple tunes to what they would continue to play later on their live albums.

Exceptionnel enregistrement réalisé à l''Atlanta Institute of Music and Media' devant un public essentiellement composé de musiciens..

@@nadje2667 Sure man! Didnt mean my comment to sound bad lmao. Here goes one video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nLqoY9CkldrKc3k.html I've been comparing both Jason and Shawn with their fastest at the slowest tempo youtube can make (0.25) both of them hit the notes at the same time and their hands are still moving at the same speed when slowing down the video. I always like to think Jason, even if people tend to say that he just wants to show technique, he cared more about music. Shawn Lane too! But I think Jason wasnt even using his 50% of his technique and speed on many lives he did with Cacophony. He just waited for the right moment to show how virtuoso of the guitar he is. Very Sad Shawn its not with us anymore and Jason cant play anymore, since I know them it is just my dream to hear them jam, but that opportunity has gone away forever :(

Guthrie comes close, surpasses in some ways I'd say. The others were less scared than respectful. Paul especially so. Vai is definitely on the "scared" list. Maybe think of it like this, you respect Shawn - don't you think he would want _you_ to respect other guitarists?
