you can also use an oyster shucking knife (you can dull the edges a bit for safety) to open the copper after you've chased it.

This was great!!! Thank you for sharing. I’ve been teaching myself jewelry making techniques for a few years but started getting into copper about a year ago. I love it! The more I try the more I want to learn. I’ve been focused on fire painting or fire patina (it’s just so cool!) but also trying to accomplish cool textures. I’ve been wondering how this sort of texture was achieved. I’m happy to see It doesn’t take a super expensive machine or press. I have most of the tools already which is awesome. I love the pieces you’ve done and really appreciate the tutorial :)

Beautiful earrings! Copper is my favorite metal. I would like to try this technique. I have a torch on its way from Amazon. My question is do you need to wear ear protection with all the loud pounding? Or does it just sound loud on the video? Also where did you get your rawhide hammer?

Very pretty.

You can use a flat or mill file to dress the end of your punch where it has been peened by blows from the steel hammer. An 8 to 10 inch file not including the handle would do nicely. Longer is better usually as you can get a longer stroke. Simply clamp the file horizontally in your vise with the damaged end protruding out about an inch. If the punch has flat sides match the angle of the file stroke paralell to the length and the angle of the surface and push forward with a moderate amount of down pressure. Continue strokes until the surface is flush. Rotate the file for the next flat and repeat the process. If the punch is round the process is similar other than using a round over motion during the stroke. It will make sense when you try it. Other wise a belt sander would do nicely as well if you have one in your shop. If you are really into metal working a mini grinder, bench grinder etc. will also do the job. Goes really quick even with a file and your punch will set back in its index.

Ever thought about using a small automotive air hammer? Many use them - including me - for some types of forging. You might be surprised how well it would work. Different patterns, no hammering, etc. Tooling would be easy to make.

What is the torch you are using and how are you connecting to the canister.

I've currently got a electrician/plumber's work site right next door as they're replacing the kitchens and bathrooms and the old wiring in the flats where I live. It's like Christmas with all the pieces of copper I keep picking up. I usually buy copper from a jewellery suppliers and its treated to stop it turning your skin green or black...do you have any tips as to any ways to stop it from doing this because its so lovely looking until I wear it lol! I know I can do various patinas and things like that but is there any sort of home made (read 'Cheap' lol!) Ways to stop it reacting with skin?

What gauge copper sheet did you use for this process?

I usually put a fire extinguisher on a side or behind me, not behind the fire. But having it in view is worth a lot too - in a panic situation, you can see a fire extinguisher, but not think about where it is.

With that type of camping stove butane and those torches, if you tip it up and get any liquid in to the injector orifice, it will instantly block due to the low quality gas.

Move camera to a still area!

I would suggest soaking one side of your rawhide mallet in saltwater for a while. Not too long, but just till it's softened a tad.

What anvil are you using?

Are those edges sharp on the earrings? If not, is there a step to making them soft or are they just naturally soft? And thanks for the video!

Do you use anything after the patina/liver of surfer to keep it that bright copper color? Anything to protect it?

Just wanted to share with you something else you can do with the copper that you made. Check out videos about flame painting, and silver articulation on copper. Nancy Hamilton has one on articulation of sterling silver on copper, and soldering without flux or solder. Thank you for sharing the video with me I’m definitely gonna try this technique. Fire extinguisher needs to be away from your work and not where you might need to move across a burning area. Talk with your fire department safety people and have them explain about the placement. They most likely will be quite happy to help you with this. What you are doing is dangerous.

Next time when you decided to pound on the table to make a video don't put the camera on the same table.

You should never quench when annealing. You’re defeating the purpose of annealing. By quenching your actually Harding the metal. Better to let cool or blow air on it.
