Air China Disappoints - Business Class Review from Heathrow to Beijing

I was really looking forward to this one - flying on one of Air China’s new Airbus A350s featuring the fancy new 1-2-1 business class. But sadly it was not meant to be - I arrived at the gate to find that instead I’d be flying an old A330 featuring a rather dated business class product.

This Air China business class flight was from London Heathrow through to Beijing. For most airlines Heathrow is seen as a flagship route so they feature their best business class product and service. Unfortunately Air China doesn’t seem to work this way. This Air China Business Class review tells the story.

Big cultural difference. In the west we’re trained to eat quietly from a young age while in China being loud signals you liked the food. They often slurp tea as well, this is because it spreads the aroma throughout your mouth.

This is why Dennis is by far the best airline reviewer .... we all know he really didn’t like this flight, but instead of just straight out bashing the airline, he gave constructive criticism and still he had some positives to say (crew etc) keep them coming mate, you are the best 😁

Welcome back, I know the feeling - you book a flight expecting to fly on 747 upperdeck only to see a 22 yr old 777-200 at the gate I happen to like the old style business class seats, i feel like they have more room, as for the food I always have the expectation that its going to be bad, so if its decent its bonus, and most of all you cant go wrong with haagen dazs

Literally the same thing happened to me! I booked business class round-trip on Air China's Beijing - London route with the A350, and they used their dated A330 on the return trip!

Thanks - yeah the rains have helped near us. I believe parts of the East Coast are still struggling with the fires - been absolutely devastating seeing the destruction.

I laughed my head off about your seat mate’s eating. Was that Sam Chui? Apparently, in Chinese culture (as well as Japanese and Korean) you’re encouraged to make noise when eating to show your appreciation to the cook 😉 But some people might just overdo it 😅

It also annoys the hell out of me. But after having discovered and understood the rationale behind it, I try to accept it (although I would still roll my eyes at them). Chinese (and Japanese & Korean) who were born and/or raised in the west may still have this *noisy* eating habit, if their family hasn't westernised. You shouldn't be surprised if you see & hear them *slurp* a pizza. Ironically, the non-East Asians who eat loudly annoy me even more! 😂😂😂

Entirely mythical at least for the Chinese part. Chatting while eating is considered extremely rude in traditional Chinese culture, let alone making louder-than-jet-engine noises!

Really enjoyed the humorous comments. This review tells us 3 things - CA A350 is only for the glossy ads magazine, food is below canteen quality and the views are stunning. Hi Dennis, I had mixed experiences on my Air China flights. The amenity kit is the same from 10 years ago. I went for the Chinese option, but the crew assumed I would have the Western option. Since the flight was empty (I was one of two pax in business from Shanghai to Melbourne) I got given both. Although there is a wine list, you do not get served at the seat, so if you do not know your wine, you do not know what you are being served. Strange you had an in seat video screen. On the A330 I was on it was a much larger seat back screen with a wide range of western options, but you have to scroll through the options to find these.

I guess it does look old - but it does look really clean, a bigh departure from BA's older configured 777-200's which I flew transatlantic to Florida in Business. We got to our seat and the seat was filfthy, with empty water bottles and discarded magazines over my mums seat! The cabin said it was due to the aircraft 'coming from the hangar' (A LGW flight using a older LHR plane) but thats no excuse for ingrained filth and litter! Luckily we actually bought disinfectant wipes with us and ended up handing them out to pretty much everybody in the cabin to clean all around the seats - the first time I've seen a cabin be cleaner after we all left! To top it off my ottoman was jammed so no Z position for me, a shame as it was a day flight and thats my favourite seat position for a day flight.

My wife and I flew the same route on the same aircraft A330 18 months ago and found it to be extremely hot in Buisness class, the food was disgusting although the service was great. Thank's for your videos they are great.

on the leg from Beijing to Sydney I chose the Chinese dishes and they were much better. Was also a better flight overall on the 777 (review will come in a few weeks)

Dennis, please contact United and inform them of their error. You should be compensated considering you bought your ticket based on incorrect information given to you. United needs to be called out at every turn until they pull their collective heads out.

Adidas Love with knife on the left, and fork on the right 7:25 ? That’s opposite :) and most business class, at least that I’m im flown with, serve that way. Restaurant always place forks on the left, and knifes on the right(eater perspective)

Just subbed to your channel after watching a few of your vlogs. Gotta say that meal and breakfast was not good enough for the ticket price. I can't afford business class but if I was given either of these two meals in premium economy.....I would have been disappointed. Although if I was in economy I would have been happy. The salad really was the true meaning of a dog's breakfast. The view though was a million dollar view. You get the good with the bad :-)

I use a Panasonic video camera - the model is in the description - it has good picture quality and zoom but is a bit big. Have just filmed a new review on this trip with Go Pro Hero 8 and it is much smaller and has great image stabilization but no zoom. I outsource my editing so can't really advise as I don't use the programs much. Have a great trip - would love to do that journey one day. cheers D

I took business class on A350 and it was so much better than expected. The food was better than the business class food I had on Singapore airlines which I was totally surprised about. The FA who served me was probably the nicest I've met on a Chinese airlines flight. Entertainment could have been better, as well as the seats (could have reclined more). I think I probably got lucky with my Air China flight

i really enjoy your videos. It influences who I book with - my experience on China Southern was great for the flight to Heathrow, but back to Auckland it was appalling. Loud noises from shouting Chinese passengers, the crew banging the overhead lockers when putting linen and blankets away, squatting and scraping in the galley in front of us, all the food from plates into a bucket which was then flushed down the toilet - really third world from a very young group of hostesses who lost control of economy passengers coming into Business class and also using the Business class toilets.

That’s the same issue with me when I booked with air China it said I was flying back from Beijing on an A350-900.. however now without notifying me it’s changed to an A330-200.. wasn’t impressed with that change

Totally agree with you Dennis, same goes for the economy class. I flew them FRA - CTU - SYD - PEK - FRA back in November. The flight ist ok but overall the airline looks dated. Food is even worse in economy. However I collect miles through Star Alliance and they were and still are some ove the cheapes airlines on long haul for me. It is interesting how the interior quality depends on the aircraft. Economy wise I'd rank them a330, 777 and 747 being the best. Going to try out their a350 in a month. Like if I should make a video about it.

I just flew Air China PEK/SYD in business. Like you i found the seat reasonable. I really hate the 2-2-2 seating . The service was good but I found the fact that the flight crew all wore face mask a little ‘worry inducing’ . ( I understand the crew concerns given the corn a virus.) They also gave everyone day planners for 2020. I flew on the first day of the lunar new year.
