Soviet Airplane enthusiast here. Nice vid, this makes me want to experience it for myself more than ever. Wow. I just love that "shrieky" sound the engines make as the flaps are starting to come down. A hallmark of old design engines that you wont hear anymore from a modern Boeing or Airbus.. there's just some unexplainable charm and appeal to that sound that only we airplane fanatics can understand and appreciate. And knowing that this is a Soviet design from the 60's makes it even more alluring.

It isn't shut down. What you are seeing in front are inlet guide vanes and they are stationary. Stage 1 (the part that spins) is behind them.

They are guide vanes which guide air into the engine. All the engines are running, as a pilot myself i don't really know what they are doing with the spooling up and down with the engines. Also notice the flaps are set as well. That could be a factor, the aircraft could be running late and to show how efficient North Korea is it could be trying to get there on time. Yet another factor could be that the pilots are under orders to quickly fly past the slums, and the outcast villages with no power.

so nice sounds of D30KU engines.I like to hear that divided operating of external and internal engines during the final approach to make a speed changing more smooth. also you can hear right before touch down a little noise from retracted revers hatches (same noise like from the breaking spoilers which are retracting during descending). So from the both videos of Il62 landing I can see like the pilots used to retract reverses before the plane touched down, what making some a little parasuit effect

I flew this plane from Beijing to Pyongyang about 12 years ago. They didn't run the inboard engines on that flight either, but there were only 42 people on that flight. Even fewer people in the return flight to Beijing. Some say that they fill the plane with fuel in Beijing to get fuel for the military in North Korea.

GPlaysGTA Online oh ok yeAH. What you have in view is called a Stator vane. It is a stationary guide vane the directs air at the proper angle to meet the first stage of compression blades . The spinning disk you are looking for is further inside the engine and out of view.

The safety of the plane is fine relive to planes of its own age. However, when compared to newer modern jets, it is much more unsafe. Look at how outdated the cockpit is. What will the pilots do in a snow storm or thundersorm, or even low visability? Don't think they have autoland. No autoland and advanced tech to help them so they have to do much of the flying and prediction in bad weather manually. Very unsafe in bad weather. Also its older which means parts will break more easily/more often.

Australia was almost banned from operating flights to america because of the way our airport security is handled by the airports rather than directly by the government, hardly a safety issue. Old planes like this are still used in many places, in fact they are safer in some respects (manual controls = no risk of hydraulic failure, no computer control = no computer failure, no batteries like 787 = no fire). Also, the blades that do not move are called stators, and are meant to stay still :)
