Air layering is a propagation technique in which an aerial portion of an existing plant is rooted to create a new, smaller plant. It has been used successfully as a means of propagating some of the more difficult-to-root plants. Because it requires excessive care and patience, air layering is generally used only for plants that do not root easily by other less complicated methods.

This is the best demonstration of air-layering I have ever seen. Every step is very clear. This woman speaks well (few to no "um", "uh", "you know", or any other distracting utterances or verbal tics). She also sounds knowledgeable and I'll bet she's actually done lots of air-layering.

This is the best video on air layering I've found. One suggestion: Removing the outer layer is easier using pliers. Grip the bark *lightly* with the curved, toothed part of the jaws, then rotate the pliers around the stem.

i air layered some bay tree branches this summer. i didnt use any rooting hormone chemical hocus pocus. nor did i use sphagnum. i used wet soil. both had rooted when i checked about 3 months later. Was well surprised, and delighted!!

This is exactly what I wanted to do with one of our rose bushes that is pushing its way into the driveway and tends to grab people's clothes. I am going to give this a try and use the new plants to create a hedge along the sidewalk.

Both sphagnum moss and peat moss will hydrate faster if you use warm water. Cold water tends to roll off.

Why do you put the rooting hormone at the place you make the cut when the roots actually come out at the area above the cut?

You shouldn't have to water the portion of the plants that you cut. That's the purpose of the peat moss, to provide that moisture. Hope this answers your question!
