What flight controller are you using

I prefer air mode because say I do a power loop through some trees, without it you would have to keep a little bit of throttle to keep control of the motors to keep pitching it backwards and yaw. With air mode turned on you can just cut the throttle off completely but you are still allowed to control the motors with pitch, yaw, and roll.

I set up a 3 pos switch on the taranis. Up is disarmed, middle is armed with motors off and down is throttle up to keep the motors spinning as slow as can get them with a differential curve of around 20. I have 3 separate throttles on my input page of the taranis. So with the switch in the down position it keeps the motors spinning and the pid loop active.

Nice. Thats one way of doing it. Seems like it would be just as good.

Min and Max throttle is ignored. Betaflight only looks at the percentage. Thats why they have now removed min and max throttle from the configuration to reduce confusion.

Make sure you have the newest Betaflight configurator. The newest right now is 3.1.1. You can see the version at the top left on the Betaflight main screen. Also make sure you have the newest version of firmware which is 3.1.6

out of my skill level the firmware stuff I can barely navigate betaflight without making the copter unflyable . o well used to it by now one day ill run in to someone in Colorado that is a betaflight god like you and we can go through every step in betaflight I want air mode on all the time and not on a switch I don't even want angle or horizon or air mode to show up in the modes menu throttle hold switch to arm disarm motor stop disabled , I have a holybro x1 on it s way from gb I would love some help seting it up the way I wish and also a way to make the osd read how many mah I have used , I am used to the vortex osd and I rely on the mah display , any other osd features I might want to use does it tell you when you need to bring it in thank you

Kevin Hill yes you can raise idle to get similar results. Some of the guys do it that way, they have normal low idle, then after they take off they flip the idle up switch which raises the idle speed enough to control at zero throttle. With that said, there are still some differences. Airmode works off a different algorithm, so you can have low idle speeds but when you input control from the sticks, the algorithm spins up the motors just enough to have full control. I've noticed that some handling characteristics are slightly different between airmode and configuring it myself with idle up. Since the airmode algorithm will let the motors idle low if you are not doing anything, it seems to "hang" in the air longer. For example when I do some inverted holds or power rolls and chop throttle upside down, it doesn't drop as fast. In full acro mode with my idle up, the quad will drop faster when inverted, when using controls or not. Airmode is a little more "floaty" which is awesome, but there could be some cases where you would not want this. Racing possibly ?
