Airborne Ubers (UBER) could become more normalized by 2025, at least according to Joby Aviation (JOBY). Electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles (eVTOLs) aim for efficient, battery-powered transport akin to urban Ubers or Lyfts (LYFT) in the sky.
With backing from major players like Delta (DAL) and Toyota (TM), Joby thinks they can be first to market in the crowded space. However, regulatory approval remains a key hurdle. The Federal Aviation Administration thinks a competitive, scaled air taxi market could launch in at least one location by 2028.
Yahoo Finance spoke with industry investors, officials, and analysts, and traveled to Joby’s manufacturing facility in Marina, Calif., to get a closer look at what to expect from this emerging sector. For those looking to play the future of aviation, regulatory hurdles, lack of infrastructure, and customer affordability are among the top considerations when sussing out eVTOL investments.

We can't even train enough pilots to fly 737s. Who are they going to get to fly four people around in an air taxi? The only way these catch on is if the government makes it a lot easier to become a pilot or these air taxi companies reduce the skillset necessary to operate their vehicle - ideally having it be completely autonomous. Otherwise all you've got here is an electric helicopter and you're selling to the same markets as any current helicopter. Except in those markets your limited range probably hurts you. I mean it might work for flight-for-life and executive transport but police and news helicopters (who like to hover and observe for an hour or more) would not want this.

I can see for my local city you can pay to rent a short helicopter tour of downtown. These aircraft would be ideal for jobs like that. That's a small market of course. But I think they are quite enough that large cities like New York will be able to build heliports with maybe six pads in convenient locations, and fly them to similarly sized ports in various suburban centers or downtown in nearby cities. Being quiet really expands the potential market. But they have to be safe and reliable -- like probably safer than traditional helicopters.

If they could carry more people and were more designed like a box, they could be used as rescue vehicles for tall buildings. Another idea with that design... Building buildings, where the highest floors are accessible by outside elevators/flying cabins. This would make construction really interesting, as you don't need to design inside elevators to the highest level. Rn lilium and Co are just the start but are just electrical helicopters. Our cities would have to change.

Infrastructure is not an issue. All we neednis electric chargers (and battert fire suppression systems ).at existing airports and heliports. Sao Paulo has UAM at scale with over 2200 urban airtaxi and otherhelicopter flights per day under current ATC.

Part 135 Air Carrier Certificate received ahead of schedule, initially targeted for second half of 2022; Certification allows Joby to operate aircraft commercially; Joby will use conventional aircraft to refine systems and procedures in advance of launching eVTOL service targeted for 2024. That is in response to the other video you left a comment on. It erased my comment. Conventional means normal. It's from their own website may26 2022 news

@@TheBagOfHolding That does not mean they'll be using conventional aircrafts for actual revenue flights. That wouldn't even work. How is one flying from JFK directly into Manhattan with a fixed wing aircraft? It says it's using fixed wing aircrafts to refine systems and procedures. Sounds like R&D and testing purposes. Not revenue flights. And I knew what conventional meant. Don't insult my intelligence by assuming I don't know the definition of a word.

@@bronxishomenomatterwhereig3149 Electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft take off vertically like a helicopter. The key difference is that they are powered by electric motors instead of conventional combustion engines. Propellers or rotors ensure they can take off vertically, hover in place, and fly horizontally

@@user-iz6dx3xs8l You know of the Osprey the Marines use right? Same thing except one is electric and makes WAY less noise. Unlike a helicopter it can transition to fixed wing flight. Thus flying way faster than a helicopter could. While still taking off and landing like a chopper. The ability to fly fixed wing after vertical take off is huge. So to dismiss it as just an electric helicopter is false
@user-iz6dx3xs8l
@user-iz6dx3xs8l 7 күн бұрын
@bronxishomenomatterwhereig3149 I am very sure this one does never transition into a fix wing like the osprey. Seems it will be very hard for faa to certify it if it fully transitions to a fix wing because that's an airplane
