The captions with this classic Kodachrome film from the U.S. Navy says it shows Naval cadets marching at Pensacola, Florida. Looks like some foreign students graduated as well. Silver, red, and yellow North American trainers in the film are both NJ fixed-gear aircraft and SNJ retractable-gear Texans. A twin-engine Sikorsky JRS amphibian takes off, and a biplane Grumman F3F fighter is fired up a bit later.
After scenes on a gunnery range, a Grumman J2F Duck amphibian is boarded for flight. The gray camouflaged Duck is marked "Photographic School", which may account for the fabulous Kodachrome movie film that was shot that day. Our experience has been that the Navy trained proficient, knowledgeable, and great photographers that captured the action well in World War II and beyond.
Early F4U-1 Corsairs show paint and markings consistent with 1942. Star insignia appear on both wings. And gray camouflaged Vultee SNV Valiant trainers numbering in the dozens reveal a mix of markings with the occasional red-centered star showing up if you look fast. These are similar to Army Air Forces BT-13s.
Ships in the film are said to be in the Mississippi River; wreckage may be in the Gulf of Mexico.

This was my dad's Navy. He enlisted December 8, 1941. He was always my hero, as well as all the men and women of that generation. Especially if they served, at home or abroad. Those planes had to be built. Thanks again for all you do and as always God bless you and yours!

Cradle of Naval Aviation, I loved going to my A school there as a young Marine. The brief we got from the brass about harassment of sailors was great, " do not sneak up on seaman in the dark and tape them to palm trees" 🤣. We had just got the new Marpat.

What an era! ... what an era! ... The F4U was my childhood's all-time favorite! ... God knows how many models of it I built! ... Love as well the short shot of the Sikorsky S-42 flying boat used notably for civilian travel throughout the Caribbean!
@Capt_OscarMike
@Capt_OscarMike 2 жыл бұрын
Same for me...I'm 55yrs old...or about to be in a couple of weeks...born in 1966...I truly yearn for those days again...I built many models or attempted too...NO SNAP TOGETHER ONES EITHER...WE CONSIDERED THOSE AS CHEATS...Same as you, my favorite Qarbird or plane when I was young was the famed F4U...mid 70s...I built 2...those 2, a Huey, a B-17, and a B-25 were what I saw when I laid in my bed before closing my eyes... my dad had helped me (ok, he did it) suspend those birds above my bed through the popcorn ceiling securing them in the attic..my older brothers also had a few models they had built and we all shared a small room...it was the Den which Dad made it into our bedroom...we were packed in like sardines but didn't know any difference...and in fact...I honestly believe it was better that way...I am guessing... but don't believe the house I lived in, grew up during elementary school was even 1000 sq ft & there were 6 of us...but like I said we didn't know...especially as kids...don't miss want you don't have... Anyway, I would spend weeks putting those things together...glue everywhere...and I always seemed to never be able to place the decals on straight...aligned... Also had a few posters of Warbirds on our wood panel walls...The area we lived, although would be considered poverty or the lowest of the middle class, every family on the street took care of the yards and homes...there wasn't junk littering the lawns or sides...my father passed away in January this year... We, the family had all moved away including my parents 40+ years ago but the area was his home, his family, and where he wanted to be laid to rest...I drove by the old house...the little suburb of a relatively small Southern State Capital City was not as I remembered... the street was not as I remembered...and the houses, including our old home, looked like a crack-house... We never had money and worked since as long as I've been living...and that didn't include chores or work at home that included dealing with a garden, etc...Yet, I still contend we were so rich and blessed because of my parents...Most others in that area were probably the same way back then...but now...I truly don't get it... you don't have to have money (a lot) to take pride in what you do have...it made me feel really sad...for a few seconds then it pissed me off... a few people were out and I couldn't help myself but to yell out and ask if they had any idea how nice every house on that street used to be...why in the hell do people living "here" now not give a sh*t??? My kids, all older hate it when I get like that...and didn't want to make a sad trip even worse...In any case, sorry to go down an irrelevant memory lane out of nowhere beyond the models...guess just that thought took me back to a much better time for me...Hate to see the erosion of America happen than any "climate warming" BS... I doubt building models is ever done by kids these days...sure the glue has been banned probably...of course the parts, all choking hazards...but hey...on a lighter note, kids today can cut and paste a picture and piece those together on one of the digital devices they have...(sarcasm inserted)... PS...apologies again for the rant...but I'm with you on being someone who used to build models...Planes, Cars and one Motorcycle...the EZ-Rider Chopper...

The opening scenes are AOCS graduation. Apparently, graduation for AOCS took place at the airfield. When I was stationed there in the 80s, graduation took place on a grassy parade field next to the Exchange which was near the cadets' barracks. Marine DIs were their trainers. I was looking at the buildings for something familiar but I'm sure as much time had passed between the shooting of this film and when I was there as has passed since then.

This color film is great. The F4U-1s, I think are from VF 17. This squadron was one of the first to receive the Corsair and were working up at this time. One Corsair has the number 17-F-25, which would indicate the 25th aircraft in squadron 17.Thanks for the post.

@Stream of Consciousness It was certainly a whole lot noisier in real life, of course I know that. But as far as I’m concerned the sound of big radials thumping away is one of the most compelling sounds ever and I can’t get enough. The music (for me) detracts from the remarkable purity of this unscripted, 100% authentic documentary. So, to each his/her own.

After looking at it several times, I think that huge gaggle starting about 7:55 are Vought 0S2U Kingfishers. I know everything else is BT-13s with fixed gear, But kingfishers also had a fixed gear option that was used extensively for divebombing training. The horizontal stabilizer is quite distinctive and the wing is a lot further forward on the fuselage than the Vultee. Anybody?

I always though the early 'birdcage' versions of P-51 and F4U looked cooler than the later bubble/wider range canopy variants. Especially building models as a kid, I always went for any kit (Tamiya, Hasegawa, Airfix) that had a birdcage Corsair over the later variants. No hate, just a preference.
