This particular video may be a few years old, but I've been using this trick for thirty years, and it's been around for far longer than I've been involved in this profession. Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment! I'm glad you found the content helpful, and I apologize for my late reply.

Great video. For scale modeling One yes use vinyl tape, and spray a clear coat before the finish color because it will fill any lifts or areas where the tape isn't 100% flat.

great advice as usual. For a two tone job , and for those who are cost conscious or had left over base color, you can also spray that base color on the masked area so if there is paint creep it is automatic match and seals that edge for the second color to be sprayed.

Throughout my 59 year's of DIY'ing I have always had to buy new roles of Masking Tape because of everything stuck to the edge of the old tape. You name it pet hair, fluff, wire wool strands, dust the list goes on lol. It should be sold in plastic canisters like PTFE Tape comes in that's used for sealing joints! I'd pay extra for the canisters it would be more cost effective than buying new roles for every job.

I can totally relate to that! On my end, it probably helps that I go through rolls of tape faster than the average do it yourselfer or hobbyist. I buy tape in bulk for the studio and the shop, but I only remove one roll from the box at a time for the same reasons you mentioned. When that roll has been used up, I'll go get another.

Once again great in depth, useable advice. The results really speak for themselves, the second panel looks much tighter. Really helpful advice regarding the order to spray the colours too. Thanks for posting Trevor.

Hi Trev. After i have put the vinyl line tape on i use a rubber walpaper joint roller to go over the tape. If you go over with a squigee it tends to crease or fold over the inside of a tight curve, the roller seems to push it down. Also a very good comment about gravity making thick hard lines on the tape. No problem if you can lay a panel flat, but as most of my work is bike race paint the thick edges are awsome for getting runs off especially round contours on fairings. The softer the edge the better. As usual, great tutorial. Guy

No Worries mate. A lot of things i don't even think about until it's mentioned, like make sure the tape is warm as it turns better and won't lift so much on the edges. Espicially on the inside of a curve. Doing graphics like you did here i will quite often run a bit of 2000 grit over the tape to knock any edges off before i clearcoat .As you know if you have a thick edge, quite often when you pull the tape off the tape comes off under the paint leaving a horrible ragged edge. Been painting all sorts of strange things for 30 years so i do it and don't even give it a thought. Hope it helps you and any of your subscribers. Guy

I know what you mean. I constantly think of tips I should've added after uploading a video. I use a similar approach for reducing thick edges prior to clear coat except I use a dull razor blade to shave them down. The ragged edges can usually be knocked off with a finger nail.

Can you share what transfer tape and frisket you recommend? Thanks for helping. Really enjoy your work
@wickedartstudio
@wickedartstudio Сағат бұрын
I use TransferRite Ultra transfer tape with a medium tack. You can get a semi opaque roll or a clear roll in different widths. I haven't used frisket in many years. The transfer tape does the same job without having to keep multiple products on hand. I appreciate the kind words and apologize for the late reply!

Trevor, did you have any advice over irregular surfaces? I paint scale model buildings and over textures, like simulated brick, I get bleed virtually every time. Thx for any thoughts. M
@wickedartstudio
@wickedartstudio 4 жыл бұрын
That's a tough one and a little out of my wheelhouse. My best advice would be to stay away from vinyl masking tape. Vinyl sticks very well to a smooth surface, but not so good over a textured surface. It also tends to lift easily when stretched. I'd recommend trying a thin paper tape like FBS K-UTG Gold Tape or 3M Precision Masking Tape. Both are very thin tapes that should stick to an irregular surface much better than regular masking tape or vinyl tapes. Other than that, a liquid mask might be a good option too. I'd definitely try the liquid mask on an old "test" model building before trying it on an actual project though. It might be more difficult to remove from a textured surface. I've never used any of the liquid masks personally. So, I don't have a good recommendation for which one to try if you choose that route. Hope that helps!

wondering if i can use clear gesso as a temporary stencii sealerl. i use temporay stencils if i airbrush over it will it stop paint bleed on canvas??? please advise
@wickedartstudio
@wickedartstudio Жыл бұрын
Clear gesso should work for that purpose. You'll likely still get some paint bleed working on canvas because you're working on a textured surface. This technique really shines when you're working over a very smooth surface.
