Visual approach along the beaches and landing of Eurowings Flight 9670 on runway 27 at Heraklion (Iraklion) Nikos Kazantzakis International airport (HER/ LGIR), Crete Island, Greece. Airbus A320 pilots at work. Produced in 4k with 4 cameras. Includes great beach and cockpit / pilot views. With cockpit and air traffic control (ATC) audio and ATIS (automatic terminal information service).
Flight number and ATC callsign is Eurowings 9670.
During the approach, the video shows Marina Port Gouves at 02:43; Vathianos Kampos Beach at 03:41; Minoan Yard at 03:55; Arena Beach at 04:00; Tobruk Beach at 04:38; Amnissos Beach at 04:44; Xenia Beach at 04:51 and Karteros Beach at 05:07
It is always special to fly to Heraklion airport: Nice views during the approach and a runway like an aircraft carrier. The approach is over water and the runway elevation is 81 feet.
Runway 27 has no instrument landing system. Usually a GPS based RNAV approach is flown or, if the weather is good, a visual approach. For the vertical guidance during the visual approach or during the final part of the GPS/RNAV approach, a PAPI (precision approach path indicator) is installed on the left side close to the runway. In the video, you can see this system. If the plane is on a 3 degree slope to the runway, it shows 2 red and 2 white lights. If it is a little lower, it shows 3 red lights and a white. And if the plane is much lower, it shows 4 red lights. The system is similar for being higher: 3 white lights mean slightly higher than the 3 degrees and 4 white means too high.

Mega gut und inzwischen so ziemlich die professionellsten Videos aus dem Cockpit auf YouTub. 👍 Ein bisschen schmunzeln muss ich beim nutzen der Spoiler, auch schon im ersten Video. - 2sec. Spoiler 2/4 - 3sec. Spoiler up - 5sec. Spoiler 4/4 - 4sec. Spoiler up - 2sec. Spoiler….. usw… 😂 Ich habe früher mein Geld mit FODA / FDM Auswertungen verdient, deshalb achte ich unbewusst auf sowas vermehrt. 😂

Hi Niko, vielen Dank für Deinen tollen Kommentar! Die Spoiler / Speedbrakes sind eine ganz gute Hilfe, im Anflug die Geschwindigkeit dorthin zu bringen, wo man sie haben muss, um zum Beispiel weitere Klappen ausfahren zu können. Auch helfen sie, Höhe abzubauen, ohne zusätzliche Distanz fliegen zu müssen. Das ist alles ein dynamischer Prozess, der zusätzlich durch wechselnde Winde u.s.w. beeinflusst wird. Manchmal benutzt man die Speedbrakes, fährt sie wieder ganz oder teilweise ein und stellt fest, dass man doch noch mehr Widerstrand benötigt. Statt dann gleich das Fahrwerk (sehr großer Widerstand) auszufahren, helfen oft die Speedbrakes kurzfristig ganz gut.

After 13 years on the A320 I never saw such a strange seatposition. The captain is sitting in the overhead panel and his knees are in the height of the PFD and ND.

Hi Marc, thanks for watching and your feedback! The seating position of Airbus pilots differ a lot. Reason is that everybody has a different "body layout". Some have long legs. Others are long or short at mid body. The good thing is that the seat, the pedals and the arm rest can be adjusted for all that. We use the eye position indicator and other clues on the flight deck to find the right position. If you remember your Airbus rating, one of the first things you do during the initial typerating, is adjusting the seat, the pedals and the armrest to the best possible position. And it does not matter how it looks, it just matters that the pilot eyes, arms, hand and feet are at the right position to fly safely. If I remember right, we did a trip together on the Airbus very long time ago. All the best to you!

Ive recently read that it is a “captain only” airport to land or take off due to high winds and turbulence. Is that true?

Heraklion can be very challenging depending on the wind direction and speed. There are no rules from the aviation authority about captain only landings at HER airport. But the airlines may implement such rules.

Noch ein super Video - vielen Dank!! Habe riesen Spaß mit eurem Kanal! Ich hätte noch einige Fragen :) Ist es bei Eurowings Standard den Autothrust auszustellen oder ist das Captains Decision? Wie wird die Entscheidung mit oder ohne Autothrust zu landen getroffen? Vielen Dank!

Jede Pilotin und jeder Pilot muss sowohl den Anflug mit als auch ohne Autothrust beherrschen. Alle sind für beide Optionen trainiert. Beide Möglichkeiten haben ihre speziellen Vor- und Nachteile. Der/die fliegende Pilot/Pilotin trifft in jedem Anflug die Entscheidung, ob mit oder ohne Autothrust gelandet wird. Diese Entscheidung ist sehr individuell, hier fließen eigene Erfahrungen, die aktuelle Wetterlage ... mit ein. In diesem Video erfolgte die Landung ohne Autothrust.

It was a visual approach. The FDs were on until about 02:20. At that time we were already on an extended centerline to the runway and intercepted the PAPI for the vertical guidance.
