Airbus “Huge Plan” for Switching Shocked the whole aviation industry! Here’s why
You might have seen Airbus pilots teasing Boeing pilots with how much they enjoy the benefits from the side stick, like ergonomics, rapid movements that or even the extra space for a handy little table allowing them to enjoy their lunch. But that’s not all and Airbus pilots are about to have another reason to give themself airs because recently Airbus is assumed to be considering a design of their new side stick. So, if this is the case, what could be the rationale behind this decision? And how is this going to take Airbus to another step forward? Let’s find out in this episode of Flig Avia.
Airbus “Huge Plan” for Switching Shocked the whole aviation industry! Here’s why
The evolution of fly-by-wire and side sticks
To answer those questions, we first need to understand the evolution of fly-by-wire and side sticks.
The Airbus A3 20 family was the first among Airbus airliners to feature side sticks and comprehensive fly-by-wire technology. But before A3 20, earlier aircraft, including several military jets dating back to the 19 60, had already utilized side sticks and even fly-by-wire in various capacities. The F-16 fighter jet, which first ascended nearly half a century ago in 19 74, was the first operational craft to incorporate a side stick. The concept of fly-by-wire predates even the F-16, with the Canadian CF 105 Arrow often recognized as the initial adopter of the technology, despite not being commissioned into service.
Airbus “Huge Plan” for Switching Shocked the whole aviation industry! Here’s why
Even in the realm of commercial aviation, the A3 20 wasn't the first to employ fly-by-wire. That distinction belongs to the legendary Concorde. However, the Concorde didn't feature a side stick; instead, it was operated with the iconic bicycle-style yokes. It's also noteworthy that certain smaller aircraft, such as the Cirrus S R 20 and S R 22, along with their Vision Jet, utilize side sticks without fly-by-wire systems. In these aircraft, the side sticks function similarly to a side-mounted yoke, manipulated with one hand rather than two.

I have worked on the Airbus since the early days of the A320 series and pilots then used to say to me “I wish the side sticks had feedback” and they still do. Most their flight training is in dual control aircraft with feed back so I takes time to learn no feedback and indeed in times of stress, pilots revert to memory and you have situations like AF447. Boeing in the early phase of their 777 development were told by pilots that they want feedback on their controls so backdrive actuators were added to the yoke controls. If you are going to have humans in the flight deck, then design a flight deck for humans.

Why don't you write something like "...impressed..."? Those many shocks are getting dangerous for my heart! (Excellent analysis and well outlined historic background, BTW!)

Sidestick is for single pilot fighter aircraft. For situational awareness in two pilots flightdecks (cock..pits) the yoke is much safer. The captain needs to see what the copilot is doing... and vice versa... FBW for both concepts, of course. Regards from the Boeing 747-8 cockpit, partly fly-by-wire.

LOL, you again. The yoke isn’t much safer. It’s 6 one way, half a dozen the other. Both have pros and cons. However, the latest sidestick technology have both sidesticks synced up, as mentioned in this video. Airbus hasn’t implemented this yet, but I’m sure they will eventually. If a yoke was indeed a safer option, all the newly designed airplanes, would have a yoke, yet everybody is switching to sidesticks. And why do you always have the need to mention what you fly? 🤣🤣🤣

@@rtbrtb_dutchy4183 Brilliant, I knew that you'll fall into my trap Dutchy. I did it just for you. Enjoy your MSFS2020 ... Regards from the 747-8 left seat. BTW, that's a Jumbo Jet... ✈ ... and you still never told us, whether you have a pilot's license or not. Are you a Jet Pilot, Dutchy? Thought so.. Have a nice day. I forgot to mention that this is a very good clip. Thank you, FLIG AVIA.

@@Renato.Stiefenhofer.747driver LOL, man, you are something else. Don’t you worry about me, the kind of flying I’ve done and still do in my career, is something you will never understand. And yes, it’s flying jets, including the 747, amongst others. Somehow you seem to think that’s important. oh, and this is going to blow your mind, we do mixed fleet flying, so I switch between two types……..of different manufacturers. 🤯

@@rtbrtb_dutchy4183 I know what you're doing, Dutchy. Your company is not a big secret. Just one question: Why does it bother you when I tell what I'm flying? I perfectly know that it's not a big deal to fly a 747 or other aircraft for that matter. It helps folks here to qualify my educated guess about side sticks. Don't know if you understand what I mean. To show a "low profile" is about the same as the opposite. Again, the current type of Airbus side stick is not as safe as a conventional FBW yoke. Any psychologist knows that. Are you psychologist, too? Got to go... If you want to talk about it, I'm easy to find. My books, too. Regards from.. ✈
