H145M firing campaign: Spike ER2 missile

Airbus Helicopters has performed the first firing demo of the Spike ER2 missile from an H145M helicopter at an event organised at the Cincu firing range in Brasov, Romania.
The demonstration followed a successful de-risking phase performed earlier this year.
The event was supported by the Romanian Ministry of Defence and held in cooperation with the Romanian Special Forces which took part in the exercise.
The exercise consisted in simulating the close air support provided to ground based special operation forces which were sent to release a hostage held by enemy forces. This sensitive mission was articulated in three phases, the infiltration, the assault supported by helicopters and the exfiltration.
During the operation the deployed special forces team was attacked by fire from enemy armored vehicles. This required the engagement of the H145M attack helicopters equipped with HForce and anti-tank missiles. Their goal was to neutralize the enemy's forces and allow the hostage exfiltration up to the secured forward operating base.

Germany plans to not modernize the Tiger to MK3 standard and get a crapload of these instead. Good decision. Armed with Spike you can just fire from hidden positions anyways. Just fire and go back home while the T72 gets fried by the time you're long out of range of any countermeassures. As long as the numbers are gonna be higher then with the tiger it's a great solution. 200 units should do.

Helicopter is obsolete against well armed foes like Russia and China. In this day and age, loitering munition and kamikaze drone can do the same job without the need for helicopters. Just look at how many tanks and IFV were destroyed by Russian lancet kamikaze drones and those were deployed by ground troops and manned by drone pilots hidden behind the frontlines. What's important is the ability to wage electronic warfare to disrupt the drone signal and bring back CWIS system ground based units.

@@ViolentCabbage-ym7ko Well, it depends on the capability of the Helicopter. Always remember that a helicopter armed with long range anti-tank missiles is deadly.

Seems dumb since there is no flexibility with those helicopters. Germany seems to be obsessed with anti tank helos, there are other missions that helos are used for. Against infantry this helicopter would get destroyed in a instant with no turret mounted gun. Its like the german version of the tiger helo aswell was only good for tank hunting but nothing else.

@@BS-vm5bt Cause it's the most relevant capability that a German helo needs to have. The long range anti tank capability is necessary for a quick mobile response to heavy armor piercing the FLOT and not allow it widening into a breakthrough. So having an affordable platform that can fire the spike ER at ranges of 10 to 16km is just what we need, since there shouldn't be enemy infantry 10km behind the FLOT anyways.

Currently the german army do not use them in a support role. But they we're developed in Donauwörth, Germany. I think thats why this helicopter has german Symbols.

The German special forces use them. The US military also use them, they build them user license from AIrbus. The American version is the UH-72 Lakota.
