Who would have thought RoyMac could talk solidly about the F3 for an hour! Apart from those of us who've been in a debrief with him ;) Nice interview Roy, I love how the Telic pic towards the end of the vid dates us all with the wrap around shades! It was taken exactly 16 years ago, 8/4/3!

Very interesting speaker, watched the whole hour, but what really made this for me was when he said at the very end that he'd worked on the University Air Squadron at Leuchars! If he was there for at least 2 years then he would have worked with my dad, who maintained the aircraft there but died unexpectedly in July 2017. (He'd also worked on the Phantom Mod Bay at Leuchars in 1987-ish when RM was there.) If the timescale is right, I very likely met Roy at the hospital or funeral, as an amazing 40 people from his work turned up... slightly unexpected end to the video for me anyway! Great interview, either way.

I'm sorry to hear you losing your Dad unexpectedly it's an awful loss. I noticed the Fighter Wing patch on the video. Looks great some of them are commemorative and have dates on. I don't know enough to tell them apart from design changes or what have you. Your Dads unit is there though and looking pretty cool. I've only just noticed your comment is 2years old now and I'm answering like it was yesterday. Best regards to you anyway.

Thanks for that, fascinating stories. I've always had a soft spot for the f3 since my 1st job was writing test software for the Foxhunter Radar. We had a full mechanical one in the lab to test, which would do everything apart from transmit, so in many ways I had more hours running the Radar than some observers. I always liked to put it into figure of 8 search mode since being an old school mechanically driven radar, the sound and vibration were something to see. God knows what it felt like when it was flying.

@@Aircrewinterview There was a plan to convert the RSAF F3 into Wild Weasel aircraft as far as I remember, which would've made use of their superb RWRH sensors. It's a shame that never happened.

My first posting was RAF Leeming in February 1988. These guys always needed arrested! Great memories and the rivalry was a bit underplayed there . 11Sqn were the big boys and 23 the challengers. 25…….. meh. I did an APC in Cyprus for seven weeks, watching all the squadrons come and go and partying with them was brilliant. They called us the Klingons , but we knew that they were all nomads. :)

The Tornado was initially designed to replace the Canberra but early on in it's development it was found to be a very good weapons platform and a substitute for the cancelled Tactical Strike Reconnaissance aircraft, where many of it's systems and capabilities came from from.

Really interesting point R.M. mentioned going against F14's and being not too successful. Regulars on the channel who heard it would definitely remember one great story. I don't know the pilots name or which video but they ( F3's) were in Cyprus. To get some Dissimilar fighter training a Nimitz class carrier was in the Mediterranean with then the F14's and FA18's. As best I can remember there was a Squadron of Hawks ( ? ). Over a 3day period one F3 and one Hawk made up 3 2ship pairs. Going against I think one F14 and one FA18 pair. I think the numbers are right 6 on 6 so 3days 36 aircraft. With a total clean sheet for the RAF with the unpredictable tactics using the Tornado paired up with the Hawk that was all new to me. I think that's one of the great things about the RAF is really thinking outside the box and daring to be different and unpredictable and a little bit crazy seems to help. Congratulations on your collection of patches all fantastic but two in particular are real eye catchers 4000+ with the Union background and the 4000HRS+ 90th Aniversary 1916 2006 is a peach really. I'd be happy to have earned any one of them.

I was also on the F3 OEU as the weapons trade manager from 91 to 93. I was posted to the OEU from the Phantom Servicing School where I'd been a weapons instructor. Communism collapsed in Russia in 91, so the Phantom was deemed to be surplus to requirements - and with it the school.

Well, it's been a week since the official end of Tornado operations in the RAF. The airframes that aren't used for testing OR sent to museums will be cannibalized for parts to support the remaining Tornado IDS/ECR aircraft life in German, Italian, and Saudi service. The Tornado probably won't be fully retired elsewhere until at least 2025. The Tornado F3 ADV version (and the Saudi ADVs which were retired around the same time as the F3) and the RAF ground attack GR4/GR4A/IDS have passed into history...

Brilliant interview! Have any Eastern Bloc pilots shown an interest in coming on the channel? Apologies if they already have!
@AvengerII
@AvengerII 5 жыл бұрын
There have been Finnish and German pilots interviewed on the channel. I think they're about the closest to Eastern Bloc. The German test pilot he interviewed is one of the high-time Typhoon pilots and he was friendly with several East German fighter pilots. This was back after the Berlin Wall fell and the two Germany's united back into one country and they were trying to merge services. The ex-Luftwaffe pilot he interviewed flew the MiG-29 when it was being as an aggressor for other NATO planes. The Luftwaffe MiG's were very limited in range and avionics and really couldn't used for anything other than "tackle dummies" and to wise up the Western air forces to the systems that WERE better in the MiG. All the successors to the AIM-9L/M series we have today are a result of trials with those MiG-29's. The Archer AA-11/helmet sight system on the MiG-29 (and Su-27) was so much BETTER than the Western "dogfight" missiles that it reinvigorated next-generation short-range air-to-air missile development and there are least 3-4 next-gen dogfight missiles in the West (AIM-9X, AIM-132 ASRAAM, German and French systems). They've caught up to the AA-11 system now but for at least a decade (during lower-tension times in the 1990s thankfully!) the Russians and their client states had a much better heatseeking missile in service. They got VERY complacent with those systems in the West for a while and put all the "eggs" as it were in BVR missile systems like the AIM-120 AMRAAM.

I'd agree with Roy about his era being the best for so many reasons. The Typhoon would be awesome to fly but with no back seater, having to do both air to air and air to ground, with fewer flying hours per pilot each month and then the increase in secondary duties due to personnel cuts. Work hard play hard balance has shifted too far to one side. Not the same. Plus the massive downsizing in stations, personnel and aircraft types and numbers. Less iconic aircraft - nothing uniquely British. More off the shelf aircraft. Most aircraft now serve in multiple air forces. Technology and cyberwarfare playing more of a role now. It's just not the same nowadays.
