Please note several things you need to know. The cockpit has no floor so you need to fabricate one. The large floor window was for carrier operations and was deleted in the RAF version by simply painting over it. On some they were panelled over. The RAF version also deleted the inflation equipment behind the seat. Consult photos to note the struts to be installed behind the seat. The RAF version deleted the hook BUT it also had a completely different tail cone and this will need to be scratch built and not difficult. The kit one is not right for the RAF one. I also made new u/c doors from plasticard as the kits are way too thick. The copyright wording is visible so needs to be sanded off. I also cut out the elevators, ailerons and rudder to add movement. Once all this is done it makes a lovely RAF version but consult your photos. The decals go on great. Good luck.

I first built the RAF version in the early 1970s. I was very proud of the finish, but the kit was lost to the sands of time. More recently I built the garish USAAF version, which is far too vulgar with its excessive paint scheme. This was a 1990s issue which only came in the American scheme. This is a fun little build, thank you for this.

This tooling is perhaps slightly older than I am. 😂. A quite good looking kit for its age. Actually my first aircraft kit was a Buffalo, Tamiya's 1/48. I don't remember it exactly, but perhaps it was late 70s or early 80s. I wonder what year the tooling for that particular kit was. It was a fine kit, if I recall it correctly. 😊

Interesting and nice to see. Hope to see the finished kit. But on the never satisfied side, I would have like to see markings for the Finnish Air Force. They got better use of them than anyone. (but that may have been an issue for sales in some countries that have outlawed swastikas, the Finnish national marking was a blue swastika.)
@ModelMinutes

I think the only reason Airfix went for the schemes they did in this boxing was because they had done them before - but yes, the Finnish insignia could be an issue in some countries

Needs a little trimming on the fuselage where the rear canopy fits as it's a triangular piece going over a squared off rear deck but a nice little kit and a decent overall fit of parts.

I built it earlier this year. Always bear in mind it is a 'Vintage Classic' and there is not a lot to go wrong. Some sanding/flash removal is needed and have fun with the cockpit framing... The only glitch was ripping one of the side decals beyond repair. Overall a fun little build of a kit I had overlooked back in the 70s.

The closest to an accurate representation is the USN F2A-2, but I think it is best to deliberately ignore the detail differences between the two schemes in this kit. They can be summarised as: different engine (with various distinctions) and propeller, different number of landing lights (but the kit has none so is wrong for both) and of course, a different tail shape (the British ones were pointy). But there were also more differences in the RAF and RN ones as they inherited a different batch from the failed Belgium order. Then there is the minor detail of the nose being a horribly simplified attempt at the actual nose of a Buffalo... It is as about as reasonable a representation of a Buffalo as the Buffalo itself was of a competent aircraft... Sorry, Matt. I'll get back in my box now. When the subject matter is something I know about it can cause me to foam at the mouth. Please call my nurse... Good video though!
