As you were flipping through the pages, I could remember almost each one of them, and all the hours spent dreaming and wondering which kit I might get for Christmas. I haven't built a model in maybe 30 years, but with this now I'm feeling tempted again 😆

That was a total trip to memory lane, I had that exact catalogue back in 70's and also read it until it rended. Some of those kits were hard to get here in Finland back then, so you could only dream to build them. I also admired how cool they looked in catalogue, and how mine were not so sophisticated, as I was 13 back in 1978. Now it has been over 30 years since I have made any model, maybe its time to start warming old habbit...

Sent my paper route money to the U.K. for this catalog, and waited for what felt like an eternity for it to finally arrive in the mail. Something I’ll never forget from my youth and how I literally wore the catalog out looking and dreaming and inspired by it all. I’ve just recently begun collecting vintage Airfix figure sets, both in 1/76 and in 1/32 scales. Your video was an inspiration for me to do so! Thank you for posting it!!

This truly warmed my heart! I got into the model kit hobby in 1978 and the 1980 catalogue, which I purchased for the large sum of 50p, actually has a lot of the same pictures in it as this one. I just realised I had quite a number of kits featured in this very catalogue, including aircraft (of course), the Maserati Indy, the Saturn V and three of the airliners (Concorde, the British Airways 747 and the Lufthansa A300), three of the 600th scale ships, the small Cutty Sark and four of the military vehicle kits which were all pretty disastrous! Thanks for the memories, and I'm still making model kits 43 years later!

Memories. I recall constantly pestering my dad every Spring to pick this up from the model shop in Bristol on release. I would wait for weeks eagerly anticipating getting hold of a copy and flipping through the pages to find the 'new' symbols for kits added to the catalogue that year.

Wow! I had that edition. Surprising to see how much was still available. I think they were at the pinnacle in 78/79. I began wargaming with Airfix ACW figures around that time and not long after they ceased production of all but the basic infantry sets. Seemed to indicate the start of the decline.

I remember giving up the hobby back in 1977 but I've always had a soft spot for Airfix despite their trials and tribulations. It's good to see they're producing new kits but sad to see the demise of the local model shop. Now retired I'm model making again. Recently did the Short Skyvan which proved to be very enjoyable...even painting the luggage.

Thank you for taking back in time, I remembered that catalog like it was yesterday🙂 My first kit was from Airfix, I was inspired when I found a half finished B29 Airfix that my big brother had begun building but never finished, first models I ever build were Airfix "dogfight kits", Spitfire Bf-109 and I think it was a kit with Bf-110, I made most of the bombers and Fighters from WW2, also the US Japanese and Russian models, highlight was the Bf-109 1/24, one day I stumbled across a 1/35 scale kit from Tamiya, I was sold. Things happened(life happened lol) , years passed and now, I have the building itch again, being interested in history, I feel it's time to resume a fantastic hobby. Stay safe everyone and happy building.

I also had the Dogfight Doubles Spitfire and Bf110. It cost 50p at the time, and I thought it was a bit expensive, until I noticed the "&" in the kit box description and discovered there were two kits in the box. I had only intended to buy the Spitfire IX, but it was a hard kit to find in our small town.

I have made all of the 1/76 scale military vehicles - and have most of them unmade, in my stash. Too many aircraft to mention, but I'd love to see the F-86D Sabre Dog (most wanted of all), Cessna 02, Piper Cherokee Arrow, and Shorts Skyvan reissued as 'Vintage Classics', as well as some of those snap-fit forts - especially 'Fort Sahara'. My last one was converted into a building similar to those in the early parts of 1977's Star Wars movie. I even scratchbuilt a little landspeeder to sit outside. If I got one now, it would have DAK troops manning it. And a Kubelwagen instead of a landspeeder. 😄😄😄

Yeah, I had this and read it to pieces - I did find another one online though, so I could get back into that feeling. One thing to note regarding Airfix is that their scales are all over the place - 1/72, HO/00, 1/32... it's weird - and yet its not until relatively recently they have dived into 1/48, making it worse... Also, unfortunately, it seems they couldn't decide on what they were making - model kits or toys, and imho they should have stuck to toys, because alas, as we can see, the quality of their kits wasn't that great. I think it has gotten better in recent years, but still far from many other manufacturers. That said, Airfix was pretty much the only player for manyy back in the day, and therefore was the gateway into a great hobby, and for that they deserve all the praise.

Still have a first issue E-Boat waiting to be built; not sure why I got it, not really what I usually built. Still have a Puma,Scout, Gazelle (re-releases). Tried the CH-46...it was horrible! Bought a couple of boxes of "Modern British" figures a few years back for ridiculous amounts of money. Many of these were available here in US under the MPC brand in the "Profile Series" with several marking options (a big thing in the 70s!), or even with extra crew figures included. Figures, vehicles, aircraft were combined together in the "Historama" series that also included a vacuformed base; looking at a DUKW with British commandos right now!

MPC is a brand i think airfix should use again for their cars or scales above 1/32,, Puma is a great build in my honest opinion. in fact i have two from the early 80's still boxed that im looking to build one of them in the future. Thanks for commenting and i hope you will subscribe

I remember good modeling times building the Airfix lancaster , Eagle transporter an others back in the day what I am wondering is why does it take airfix to come out with retool kits for so long ? I know they did a mosquito recently like that has not been done before why haven't they retooled their Val dive bomber ? I also heard Airfix corporation makes their kits in india now which is a bad thing because some of their quality control is bad, I recently purchased the Airfix FGR Phantom one of the tail stabs was not molded right an it sucks because you purchase a kit from Airfix now that costs like $40.90 here in the states for a 1/72 scale kit an expect quality an do'nt get it!

Thats some interesting thoughts there.. A lot was said ast years when they said they were doing a spitfire MK Vc and we were all like, "why another spitfire???" They are releasing the Val as a vintage classic.. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rbphitKI3qm7iJs.html heard the tooling is still good for it
