LOL 1971 I was 7 years old. I grew up a military brat and I started school in Germany. Had some interesting model kits overseas. My dad bought a WWI Sopwith model kit and I helped him build it. At 9 I was hooked. And today I'm 58 and still building. I remember these old catalogs.

Brings back memories. Started building models when I was seven years old in 1965. Started with Revell(1/32 airplanes, spacecraft, military ships and sailing ships). About the only manufactures available in Vermont at the time(1965) was Revell, Monogram, Aurora and Airfix. Then Hasegawa and Tamiya models were becoming available. Still building models today. Sadly, the models are from overseas manufacture. Aurora and Monogram are now defunct and Revell is now based in Germany.

Remember so many of these.... At the time, I didn't know catalogs like this existed. (Was only 11 when this came out). One of the first trips I made to a "real" hobby shop in Mt. Healthy, Ohio: had saved my grass cutting money for weeks, bought the 1/720 Prinz Eugen, USS Franklin and USS Arizona. 3 kits at once! Think they were $1.50 each. Boy, I was just beaming! Here in the states, Revell was pretty common and about all you could find. Airfix kits from England...those were exotic! Wasn't until we moved to Washington, DC and visited the Squadron Shop (back when Squadron had retail stores!) and saw cases of "professionally" finished models in display cases that I realized this could be a "serious" hobby and you could do more than play with models once you finished them. Although I still make funny noises and "fly" my planes and helicopters around if nobody is looking....

I started building plastic models in 1970. The local hardware store kept a small selection. Mostly Revell 1/72 scale aircraft and 1/720 ships. I spent all my paper route money there.😁 Still buy and build the old Airfix, Revell, and Heller kits! Love them. Thanks for showing these!

I have the 73-74 catalog, and it's pretty similar to this. By 1976 there was much less artists' work of the subjects, and more photography of the real kits, reflecting changes in box art that would continue throughout the decade. Thanks for posting!

Revell's WW1 aircraft kits are still in production today. My favourite was the Sopwith Triplane. I still have one in RNAS markings. I have no idea if that's correct, but it looks cool. Some of Revell's kits of this period were a bit primitive, and some of the pilot figures were rubbish, usually replaced by Airfix or FROG ones. I had some of the space kits in the 1980's - but never made them, using them for 'greeblies' on other modelling projects.

“Vintage” 1971 was the hey day of my mid-teen model building. I was just getting proficient enough to take on the bigger more detailed kits. In fact I recall building both the PT Boat and the Honda Cafe Racer kits. Good stuff! Thanks.

I was amazed when you turned the first page and the first picture was the Spad. I recognized the artwork, forgot that I used to have that kit. Outside of the Memphis Bell, I am not sure about the others. I had at least 9 other planes but without the box art I am not sure they were the same kits. Same goes for the Bismarck, Pennsylvania and the Forrestal too, but the artwork looks different. My models were all from the 60’s so maybe they changed the artwork for the 70’s. My older brother built the 3’ Thermopylae and the 3’ Constitution. Same artwork there. He swears he did not have the Ironsides but I can remember standing in his room looking right at it and all those canons. He went to the DMZ right after making that and I think it affected his memory. Going from toy canons to real canons might do that.

I remember that one . Revell was exotic , can only assume I got the catalogue from Argyle Models in Glasgow . I was an Airfix kid ,so Revell was different . Mainly for their range of Helicopters , 1/32 aircraft , submarines and large sailing ships, like the Constitution and the Clipper Thermopylae. As you pointed out while trying to figure out the scale of the aircraft carriers was they were all different. Not constant scale like good old Airfix . One kit I always wanted, being an airliner enthusiast was the DC8 . I finally got one a few years ago . Other kits I got were the Ben Ledi and the Trawler Kandahar . But again the scales are all different .

Some of those kits are still around today, I know for a fact Revell of Germany released that 1/32 Corsair a year or two ago and you can still find them in the original box. It's not bad but does need some work to bring it up to standards, mainly in the cockpit. The 1/32 P-38 is awful, though. However, Kow (Go) Yokoyama did use the engines from that old kit to make his Falke attack craft model.
