Let's build the newly tooled Airfix 1/72 F4F Wildcat as depicted during the Guadalcanal campaign. I want to build it as it would have appeared after just arriving to Henderson field. This plane was flown by World War 2 fighter ace Major General Marion Eugene Carl. I will go through the entire build start to finish, and point out things of interest as I go. For a more in depth analysis, I created a vlog series as I built this here:
• 1/72 Airfix Wildcat Be...
I hope you enjoy watching this as much as I did making it!

@@joekmodels what did you think of their choice of paint colors? For the top I went with a lot darker than they suggested. Mine ended up about the same color as yours.

@@joekmodels I was surprised by the different colors you used below. I have never taken into consideration for example to use others in addition to the white. This has resulted into a new pattern once the base color has been put on top. May I ask you the ratio you thinned those tones?
@joekmodels
@joekmodels 4 жыл бұрын
@@MrMarcocamp I had them pretty thin to control how much I was putting down. I would say maybe about 70-90% thinner. The more paint you have the higher the opacity, so I try to go light and go over parts I want to show up more with more passes. Also, when you put your main color down, you want to be putting it down thin so you don't cover up everything too. You can never go too thin imo but def too thick. As far as colors go, there is probably a lot of color theory here, but I try and use complimentary colors and study photographs. If you look really close you can see hints of greens/browns sometimes and this might be done using a filter also. Adding the brown before the white on the bottom would give a "dirter/dull" appearance simulating many mudding landings or fluid stains over time. Hope that helps. If you look up Doogs models on YT, he has a whole video series on the subject of black basing you might want to check out. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qMmgn658nrqtqHk.html

@joekmodels

Thanks Andy 👍 Always trying new things out when I can. I really liked how it takes away any ghost seams you might typically get if you were to just sand over regular filler. Certainly something worth experimenting with. I've also been having good success with sprue goo on my more recent projects which is kind of a progression from this what I did in this video. Appreciate you checking out the video!
