Another fine Build of a great little kit , Gary , and some interesting history . I never knew that the Wildcat and the martlet were virtually the same aircraft. I think , Grumman liked their cats ; Wildcat , Bearcat ,Tigercat , Tomcat , ETC. Thanks for another well presented and informative video .

Cheers Tony! Odd thing really that Grumman is so cat focussed when cats are supposed not to like water. Maybe they are implying that their planes will never ditch?

It is a little beauty, just a bit of a pain if you like to airbrush or if you're just a bit clumsy with things sticking out - like undercarriage. But otherwise it's pretty good and it comes with the bonus of wing folds.

Really enjoyed your video. I have just completed building the stand alone kit and found it a rather unpleasant experience. The fuselage fit was poor and the undercarriage was overly complicated to my mind. After watching your video I am thinking the problem rested more with me than the kit so I am tempted to purchase another one and try again. Thanks for posting.
@garys_stuff

Thanks Tony. The undercarriage was not well designed, I agree. I'm about to make the Arma Hobby one - doesn't have wing fold but might be of interest anyway...

@@garys_stuff I am actually primarily a railway modeller and have a selection of half built brass and whitemetal kits that I must turn my attention to soon. But also now looking at larger scale Tamiya kits for aircraft and military vehicles so no shortage of options on the market these days. I did build the Tamiya Corsair which I quite enjoyed doing. Fortunately I have a very understanding wife

I love this kit! I’ve built two (one was in the dogfight doubles kit) I did find the landing gear was a bit fiddle also, resulting in a poor fuselage fit. I am excited to build more however!

Very nice build. I built one of the Airfix Wildcats a year or so ago and found the gear assembly quite a challenge, just couldn’t seem to wrap my head around how it was supposed to go together. I do want to do another one with the wings folded, really think that is a cool option.
@garys_stuff

The gear is a challenge, but just follow the instructions really carefully and do a lot of dry fitting! It does make sense eventually.

Lovely build there, your videos have made me tempted to stash some 1:72 scale Airfix kits to practise and get into model building shape. Here in Iceland those kits cost about the same as a pack of cigarettes, and thank goodness I gave up smoking. Besides, building models is a far healthier addiction.
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff 2 жыл бұрын
Funny how saying "cost the same as a pack of cigarettes" used to be a cheap thing, and now it is something really expensive! Mind you, lots of things are expensive in Iceland but your country is beautiful, as are your people. Very best wishes and good luck with the models!

Another exemplary build. Plainly, the Airfix wildcat is a very well moulded interesting kit. I especially liked the way you showed some picking out of detail e.g. on the bulkhead, using single stage simple washes. My frustration remains as to whether to go invest in a spray gun or stick with paint brushes only.
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Randle. I do like the airbrush for some jobs, but for others the brush is by far the easiest option for me. I'm not good enough with either to completely rely on one or the other!!!

nice kit that.. still dont understand the decision to design a kit that makes you build the under carriage sooo early in the build, i watched Joek Models build his and put the gearing on after painting the fuselage.. had to adapt the model slightly but proved it could be done.. I have the Airfix Martlet in the stash for a future build, but this time ill have that one with gearing up on a stand.
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff 2 жыл бұрын
Just had a look at the instructions for the Arma Hobby Wildcat and they have the gear legs built in two parts - the interior legs before the fuselage buttons up then the lower bits later using a template to get them all lined up. But then they also have all kinds of things like a really good engine. And its only a few quid more.

@@garys_stuff Sounds like an interesting way of doing it.. The academy wildcat (frog ripoff) builds the gearing after the fuselage is built too

Aye that you should. One good thing about Airfix, their models aren't too terrible on the wallet. But if not them, you might check out the newest stuff from Arma Hobby in 1/72, they've really stepped up their game. Even if you get just the basic F4F-4 or FM-2 that are the Plastic Sets (NOT the Expert Sets) you still great a fantastic little model to have a go. And they're price comparable at least to Airfix, from where I'm seated here in the States.

Just found out this vid, a nice build indeed - and kudos to Airfix as well, as they're doing some gracious work nowadays, having definitely set the bar to a great level as compared to the 80's, although I don't 100% fancy the quality of their styrene, a bit too soft to my tastes. Anyway...just bought the archeological Revell's Wildcat 1:32 second-hand (I just love these relics from the past, since they give you plenty of opportunities to learn scratch-build, well, if you really fancy doing it, of course). A long foreword, but now straight to some questions to you: 1) you mention PVC tape, is it a cheaper alternative to the modeller's branded ones? 2) you use Vallejo acrilics, also in your spray-gun? Are these from the Air series, or the acrilic/vinyl type, e.g. Vallejo Model/Game Color, just properly diluted? Thanks a lot!
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Жыл бұрын
Hi Andrea, I use PVC tape where I can for fine lines as I find it makes small curves more easily. Paper tape starts to crumple quite soon if you try to follow a sharp curve, but PVC seems to manage it better. For most other tape I use something like Frog Tape, a low-tack tape used by decorators which is a whole lot cheaper and I cut it to size. Most of the paint I use in the airbrush is Vallejo Model Air, but some of that needs thinning as well. I use Model Color for brush painting most of the time.

Hi Gary, I could be wrong but I don’t think you have built a kit that’s not Airfix? There’s plenty of amazing brands out there that build all sorts of subjects!! I think you would thoroughly enjoy other brands like tamiya, eduard etc As always, great vid!!!
@garys_stuff

Well, I did do the Prone Meteor a while back... but I got a stash of Airfix when I started doing the videos and I've been working my way through - then they do things like release new ones, the swine! OK, so I've got the new Tempest V on the way but I'm getting the KP one as well to run a comparison. And I've got a Gaspatch Me-163 that is crying to me to be built. And a couple of Revell kits. So diversity is on its way! For my last (sadly pre-YT) project I did Airfix, Special Hobby, Eduard, Revell, AZ Model and Sword as well as an old Heller and some resin kits and even a vac form!!!

Just out of curiosity, why did you use Vallejo paints instead of the supplied Humbrol ones?
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff 2 жыл бұрын
Well, mainly because I wanted to airbrush and I've had issues with the supplied paints in the past. You'll see from my Zero video that one of them was completely wrong. However, the Aldi offer videos (they are in a playlist) were all done with the contents of the box only.
