thoroughly enjoyed this very informative look at the ft/lbs trajectory of the air gun pistols, air rifles and different calibres.I have been a pest control officer for a long long time and have seen the Air rifle evolve as time went on, I agree on the majority of what you have talked about But the one thing that I disagree on is untrained people who have NO idea about most forms of pest control in their gardens, Most haven't a clue when it comes down to shooting vermin in the garden, and I doubt if most have never looked at where the SHOT or pellet will go after they have pulled the trigger, let alone if the weapon they have purchased will KILL what they attempting to KILL, that brings me around to The Pest control act ,And that it is against the law to make any form of "Pests to suffer" and that vermin should be Dispatch cleanly and not to cause suffering, If you shoot any type of weapon in your garden, and the projectile leaves YOUR boundary you can be prosecuted. I inform the Police on any shoot I have to use any of my Air rifles, no matter where it is.

I am an engineer in the USA with a small business out of my little shop, and I have to say you do a really good informational vid with what seems to be pretty scientific with methodology and good attention to detail. But it is not the guns that require a license. It is a overbearing government that requires a license. That is why I wish you would take your expertise and methodical thinking, and move to the USA, where you would have much more to work with. Any government that disarms the citizenry is more dangerous than a armed "adult" citizenry. Just about any "toy" can hurt people if they are not used correctly. I know. As kids, my brother had a drum set. Reject the baby sitter. We are adults. Now there is no shortage of government baby sitting in the USA, but a 12 year old kid can still hunt small game with a 12 gauge semi auto shotgun, and sometimes, the child even shot a dangerous criminal who broke into their home. The right of self defense is a basic human right, and you can't have a civil society with out that right,---for long.

Simply incredible. So informative and I only wished I had watched it sooner. I only started shooting air rifles 6 months ago after a break of many years from firing mainly 7.62 rounds (many ‘000s). For me now as a range shooter, obtaining a close grouping on a paper target at 40-55 yards is a real challenge with sub 12 ft lb rifles. Obtaining it consistently is my goal and takes a lot of patience and skill. I had considered obtaining an FAC gun and license but after watching this, I think that I will perfect my short distance work before considering a longer range.

Living in the US, I’m not limited to power. I have a Benjamin Maximus and Marauder f&t model, both in .22. I’m actually wanting to tune the Maximus down in power to use for pests closer to buildings. I am doing this to reduce the likelihood of pass through on squirrels and birds. Torn between a 9 ft/lb tune and a 12 ft/lb with shots being no longer than 30 yards

For 30 yds a 12ft/lb rifle would be good for small game with little to no passthrough, Use 15.89 hades or jsb diablo and youre good to go. Im in the uk so only have 12 ft/lb but have no probs with rabbits, squirrels and the like.

Andy, I dairy almost daily and you are correct about pesting. The all in one pellet test is another good example. Ex ,if you have a line of birds on a fence line with the shooter at 40 yards in the place where he only see's one bird. He shoots with .22 at least 3 but usually 4 birds fall dead, but with a .177 you will only get 2 birds to fall dead 2-10 times. This is important IMO as well because here in the US where small man syndrome is leading indicator of stupidity. There are to many shooting .25 and .30 on farms dairies etc. The Dairy I shoot I will only allow .177. I wish more shooters took the time to understand momentum and power or potential damage after pass through. Good video Thank you

isn't it? Andy da man i would only add from my experience, if you see a $10 or $17 bb gun, get it! every one is fun, and every one you learn from. . One of my very favorites in my growing collection is a $17 walmart daisy buck. I reach for it more than any other. I just added my first break barrel, a .22 I nicknamed "Magnus" after the first shot, 32 foot pounds, smells like victory. Another favorite is a $34 walmart daisy 880 multi pump that I put a reflex green dot on for another $14. . I figured "let's stimulate the economy" right? So I got a CO2 beretta bb pistol with full auto. It adds a new dimension to the stable of air breathers. All of them together probably total $300. And I'll be thirsty for my first PCP some day, but for now I got a team to run here, and a weapons room to build (Kingsman style? Terminator? So many options)

Thanks for such a informative tutorial! You explained this topic very well🔫 AirGun ammo of different shapes and designs can retain more of its energy down range than other shapes, specifically the cylindrical lead slug/pellet. As most AirGun enthusiasts will recall, The Sheridan pneumatic multi-pump air rifle originally had its own ballistically superior cylindrical bullet shaped pellet or slug designed for it, and that's why the 700 fps .20 cal. Sheridan model CB pneumatic AirGun shooting Sheridan cylindrical lead pellets should always have more energy at the point of impact down range than a 700 fps .22 cal. Pneumatic multi-pump air rifle shooting a diabolo shaped lead pellet of the same weight as the Sheridan slug. A good comparison would be my 1972 Sheridan CB Blue Streak shooting 14.3 grain .20cal. Benjamin cylindrical lead pellets and my 1976 Crosman 1400 PumpMaster shooting 14.3 grain .22cal. Crosman Domed lead pellets. There are ballistic graphs/charts online that would show how much energy each pellet retains at the point of impact. I guarantee that the Sheridan cylindrical bullet/pellet always retains a much higher percentage of its muzzle energy at the point of impact.

An excellent video explaining what most ignore about air rifles. I have a rule of thumb of 6 ftlb at the target for a well placed humane dispatch which as your figures (and any of the software) will bare out is around 40-50m for a sub 12 .22. As most pcp's these days have the sub1" accuracy at that range, this gives the accurate shooter more than enough for all but the most pesky pigeon. Accuracy is the answer and knowing your gun/scope combo and practice is the only way to convert to success, all the power in the world won't help if you can't hit the target. Chairgun appears to no longer be supported by MTC and is no longer available on the app store and wont run on MAC sadly but Strelock (basic) will work very well

Absolutely fascinating coverage of these airguns, interesting and remarkable stats too; I've owned many over the years, but with nothing like today's power. Looking back to earlier days, starting with a BSA 'Diana', Meteor Cadet Major, a 'GAT pistol. Webley Nemesis; the BSA 'airsporter' was quite powerful as was the German 'Original', for that time. Thanks Andy - very well done! You describe what I have always referred to as the "Maximum Effective Range" - which is the farthest distance that the rifle, optics and SHOOTER can (consistently) hit the Kill Zone with ADEQUATE power to make a humane kill. Obviously, all things being the same, a rifle enough power for sparrows at 25 meters might need to be limited to 10 meters for rabbits - glad that you point out the energy loss over the distances as many people used to .22 LR rimfires seem to forget this. As you mention, bottle caps are about the size of the kill zone on most (12 fpe pellet gun sized) pests and small game - they were my favorite target when I was learning to shoot. I've replaced bottle caps with 1" spinners now so I don't have to go searching for them. Nothing beats real world data but I like the Chairgun program as well; find it very useful for visualizing trajectories, unfortunately Hawke is no longer supporting it. ATB from Ontario; Canada.

All birds are protected in U.K. with good reason. Sparrows, once common are now rarely seen (probably all killed in Canada!). There are some exceptions (usually corvids and types of pigeon if crops need to be protected) which I don’t have time to go into, but the information is out there.
@hankvana2149
@hankvana2149 3 жыл бұрын
@@lordcharfield4529 Habitat destruction and over population of humans with their associated pollution is what kills off wildlife, not a couple of birds shot (legally) for being a nuisance. No shortage of sparrows around here, I have 10 acres of rural property with over 60 species of birds - including 5 different types of sparrows. Most non-game birds are protected in Canada (including ravens) but there is a number of species that are classed as "pests". Most of these pests are not native to Canada (English Sparrows and Starlings for example) and are a threat to the native species. If you are concerned about sparrows you are more than welcome to take them (all) back, I'm sure that my barn swallows are tired of having their nests taken over and will be pleased to see them gone. Great video! I'm a science and numbers guy, so I love this stuff. Also makes me appreciate America even more. We have no rules on airguns at all, basically, other than the fact young children can't buy them and restrictions on where they can be shot (I live in town and cannot shoot in city limits, for example). But as far as ownership, as an adult I could order a 450 ft/lb PCP and have it delivered with no paperwork or license at all. Although, honestly, my favorites are springers that range from 14-30 ft/lbs, of which I have many (too many, really). Freedom, Baby! :)

Yeh, it is useless for wood pigeons, it is inhumane and causes suffering to the animal. My mates' cat caught a woody, the poor thing was in a right state after the cat mauled it, but it left it alive and walked off. The pigeon had shat itself, and it was walking around half dead with its head flopping about somewhat, we felt bad for it. He decided the best thing to do was to put it to sleep by shooting it. He got his rifle and shotted it through the head with a 22,12ft lb, gun, it took THREE point-blank range shots to end its life. Sad. But we had to do something for poor thing...

Good video Andy. For humane pest control imho you need a fully stocked rifle of no less than 10ft pounds. You should also make sure your own marksmanship is up to scratch and you really know the gun you’re using . C02 replicas are fun guns for backyard plinking. There’s plenty hunting class rifles to choose from.

yes, we have the second ammendment in the US, but you still go through a background check to buy a firearm. To get a carry license you go through additional background checks along with a class, finger printing, range test, and permitting with the state in which you live. Yes, we can own a firearm, but we still have to go through background checks. Most crimes are committed by people who did not go through the required checks but instead have stolen weapons from family and friends or that were purchased illegally on the street.

@lochinvar00465 4 жыл бұрын
The requirements vary state to state. For instance, while I did need to go thru the NIC check, fingerprinting was not required. As well, to carry there are now no permits required here. When I bought my 50 cal pistol, I simply ordered it and it was delivered to me, no checks at all, all I had to do was sign the delivery receipt.(muzzle-loader flintlock)

The .20 conundrum reared its head in the 80s if memory serves me right. As well as high mounts. All in the quest for greater accuracy. I don,t pop anything off any more, I just shoot paper at a local, very friendly range. What amazes me are the amount of people who think more power will make them God like at 70 yards, as they put in groups at 30 yards, that look as though they were shooting in a hurricane. And why on earth would you want to wind up your FX mid session? Just because it cost them a lot of money? Accuracy is the name of the game. That only comes from practice, consistency and knowing your gear.(And knowing your quarry). As always another good one Mr AAR.

I enjoy your videos as a bedroom window hunter of mink and grey squirrels. Back in the day I was in the British Army during the transition between 7.62mm SLR and the 5.56mm SA80. I still, retain the belief that it is the transfer of energy (mass x velocity) that does the damage. (No one ever got up after being hit anywhere on their body by an SLR shot). For this reason I use a simple spring loading Gammo zeroed in to the end of the garden where it meets the pond and the heaviest .22 pellet I can buy. A 1gramme+ .22 pellet shot centre of mass into a squirrel or a mink will despatch it more humanely than a headshot that is much harder to make accurately and more often than not results in the creature dying in spasms. A heavy centre of mass hit takes out the vital organs because of transfer of energy creates a devastating shock wave. A Colour Sergeant described the difference as being hit at 100mph by a feather or 5mph by a bus. The bus will cause damage.
