I’ve been flying professionally for 26 years. You would make a great professional pilot. You’re conscientious, you use checklists, and you obviously understand that safety is the number one priority in all you do. Love seeing you two on velocity now! So happy for all your success. When you guys make it huge and buy a corporate jet I would love to come be your copilot! Thanks for all the great content and promoting all the things I love. Hope to run into you guys at Oshkosh sometime.

I can relate to the not sleeping worrying about was that safety wire the proper direction or a million others! I was a crew chief at Edwards AFB in 71-78, was lucky enough to get on the test projects after f4s We developed, tested and engineered airframes before the AF bought them! Then climatic tested everything. Before computers of today! The A10 was my fav. went to the factory in Long Island NY to help build them for 8weeks! Nowadays I have a lot of health issues from the fluids used! But still, I'm glad and grateful for the ride! In 1971 I drove cross country to NY in 240z.

enjoy the mix you have on this episode. Some of the A&P (and why), showing the extras in changing the oil and why you do so much more than for an auto, and of course the flying. Explaining WHY with all that you are doing makes the most routine parts of the video come alive in a meaningful way. And it shows that you are enjoying yourself, which makes everything fun to participate in. Keep it up.

I was a member of the all at once club, started my PPL on Feb 01/79 and took up my first legal passenger on Feb 14/79. Soloed on day one at 1.5 hours did my flight test at 20 hours and had to fly off 15 hours solo for transport to sign off on the paper. Had been flying with my dad for a few years before though. All this thorough a major hub CYVR. Can't do that these days. Love the vids, good luck on the carrier change.

It's great to see you two flying around in your Skyhawk. Ellie seems like a real nice bird, eager but well behaved. Edit: That is a credit to the quality of the pilot also, not just the aircraft! I was lucky enough as a teenager to get a little under 20 hours flight time, mostly in Skyhawks. I fell in love with those Cessna 172's, especially a really old one I flew that had a six cylinder engine and hand-operated manual flaps. It was quite a feeling to pull up on the flap handle, which resembled a car's e-brake handle, and have the airplane lurch up and back almost like it actually was an e-brake handle! I do miss flying very much. Thank you for taking us Earth-bound folks along on your flights. I really appreciate the vicarious flight time. :)

Aaron, Being an airplane guy as well as a car guy, I’m lovin’ the new series! I built my airplane from a kit in 1997-2001, I was told by my FAA inspector who issued my Experimental Airworthiness Certificate that the act of building my plane went a long way towards the experience needed for the A&P license. I never did that because with the Airworthiness Certificate came a Repairman Certificate to work on that particular airframe. I’ve been able to do all my own maintenance on my own airplane. Been about 1000 hours now and still lovin’ it. You sat in my Glastar in Watertown B4 OSH last year. Keep up the great work!

Thank you for describing the liability A&P's place among themselves when they sign off work on a airplane. The carb costs 125 but the serviceable tag to get that FAA/PMA cert is over a $1000 was a good comment. Been wrenching on jets since 81 and getting my A&P was the most proudest moment in my life. Aaron, That was a great landing, in fact it was so smooooth I thought that you actually were landing long, from the camera perspective it appeared that you were still high when you touched down. I could not detect touchdown in the video. Good Luck with the aviation career, I got my PPL 30 years ago shortly after getting my PPL kids came along and flying took a back seat, I wish I could have somehow found a way to continue flying with a family, so now I get my flying fix on KZfaq and flying R/C airplanes.

I know I'm late to the party for commenting but just dropping in to say I enjoyed this video. I went to A&P mechanics school next door to the North Little Rock Airport for two years and decided it wasn't the career for me for the same reason you did Aaron. I simply can't let something go without a piece of me going with it. Plus, I was 1 month into my first semester and 9/11 happened causing a bunch of uncertainty in the aviation industry. I did learn TONS of mechanical and people skills in those two years that I probably wouldn't have learned anywhere else so it wasn't a waste of time or money at all plus I had a full ride with a scholarship. I was a scared teenager going in and way more confident and skilled 2 years later. Bumping into people I was in class with years later I did realize I made the right call because of the field being so competitive. And yeah, airplane parts are EXPENSIVE for a multitude of reasons. Oh, good looking old girl Ellie is.

You never want to unwrap safety wire. Measure and clamp where it will go into the hole. Twisting and then unwrapping the wire degrades it. And remember to reverse the twists on the end you pig tail. 10 year Crew Chief (aircraft mechanic) in the U.S. Air Force, still serving. Just a little tip. And for your oil look up JOAP kits. Should be a little plastic bottle that makes collecting oil for your oil analysis.

Excellent! You might elaborate on the currency requirements for both day and night VFR flight since you mentioned you were not "night current" in this video. When you checked the fuel and "sniffed" the sample you could mention the difference in color and smell of avgas compared to auto gas and diesel fuel and that you were also looking for any water contamination. Keep up the good videos and FLY!! -- jrt CFI A/I.

Hey! Having been a mechanic most all of my life, I can really relate, Aaron. I went to my back-up profession of driving trucks, after spending the better part of 25 years as a Harley mechanic. The driving thing has stresses of it's own, like making sure I don't kill anyone with that big mother everyday, but it's a break from concern over my customer's lives. Wow this is great! My son is a senior in high school and has been taking Aviation program. He is in the second phase “flight ops” and has had many hours on the sim. We live about 10 minutes from KCCO and there is Falcon Aviation school teaching anyone but mainly Chinese students. I checked with them and got him a discovery flight last week. The got off the ground a little after 18:00 and the sun was painting the sky! The CFI allowed him to fly and do a few bank turns etc. it was truly an experience he will not Forget. Just some quick advice, if he does choose to be a pilot. Be careful about choosing the flight school,there's a lot of nightmares out there so choose wisely. I'm a fan of the instructor with their own plane over a school. They're usually a ex pilot etc and do it for fun. As far as college goes,he doesn't need to take something flight related and it's honestly better not too so he'll have a fallback if he loses his medical and cant fly. The airlines don't care what degree you have as long as you have one. Lastly if he gets his commercial before finishing college he should try and fly banners. It was one of the best summer jobs ever and I got hours and pay. Anyways good luck, a flight addiction will definitely keep him out of trouble ;-)

SouthJerseySound thanks for the advice! He took welding also and really did well at it, that was a back up that we talk about too. I do like the idea of a person with there own plane, there are a number of guys at the local airport that may know someone. There are two flight schools, one small one and the other is larger that is mainly training Chinese students to fly, so there is always a chance for hours. It is my understanding that once guys get the license they then become a CFI for Falcon to get their hours in. It is an adventure, and a path that we will take one step at a time. Again thanks for the input!
@southjerseysound7340
@southjerseysound7340 5 жыл бұрын
@@porkchop659 The big schools can be like pilot mills that are more worried about billable hours over training. But that isn't always the case but chances are a small school that is part of the FBO at the airport is better for those of us that have to work and fly at our own pace. Now as far as becoming a CFI/building time goes. You start out with a Private pilots license, then go for instrument rating etc before you get your commercial ticket that allows you to be a CFI or any other flying for hire job. CFI's banner towing etc are commercial jobs you fly to build time for your ATP(Airline Transport Pilot ) that you need for the airlines etc. It's just a ladder you have to climb as you gain experience. Also keep in mind there's a lot besides the airlines, I personally hated flying for the airlines and left the industry. But thankfully I found a spot doing AG flying (crop dusting) and wouldn't change it for anything now. I also started flying for a aerial tanker company this year too. Though it's temporary now but I'm hoping to go full time with them when possible. Here's a quick video of banner towing from where I used to fly kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7WofqyYntDMqHk.html and this is a great video showing some AG flying kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bJt7f7FmzKqsqn0.html and there's a great video from AOPA on AG flying too out there.

Safety wire tip.. measure just about a 1/4" past the hole your attaching to on filter, twist clockwise adding a few twists if needed. (Don't untwist wire... start over if too long) After you put 1 wire through hole twist COUNTERCLOCKWISE for pig tail, cut off an inch or so then bend over on itself to form loop so no one gets stabbed. Wire plier speed tip... after pulling to twist push in with flat part of hand against knob (rounded off nipple at end) then squeeze and pull again till done. It's a good idea to practice on a work bench till you get good at judging just how many turns per inch looks. Keep up the great work / videos! If you need more tips just ask. There are a few of us A&Ps watching ya.
@mikeyanp

1/4 inch past hole because as you twist the wire it gets a little shorter. The longer the run the more it shortens. Twists should stop right before the hole, no big loops before going into hole.

The worry and the responsibility that goes home with you are hard to deal with from time to time. I also get not being an A&P, too much responsibility there. Really good choice for you to take that stress of wondering if your work stays successful away from your life soon as it will probably help you with living happier longer hope Emily doesn't mind that peeps like me enjoy seeing you get in front of the camera and talk more about your passions

Awesome video!!!!!! I've wanted to fly, since I was a kid growing up, watching "Sky King"! Never had enough time to get my license. Work. Marriage. Raising kids. Work (yes, always work!). At almost 65 years old, don't have enough time left to get my license. THANK YOU for posting this video. I'll be looking for more.

Amazing video I love the technical side of the airplane and really enjoy the flying. I am so happy to see people doing things that they love I messed up early in my life and went for the money rather than something that I enjoyed it is to late for me now but I'm glad that you can follow your dream and fly. Please keep up with the teck stuff and things like filing a flight plan I really enjoy that stuff. Love the channe l you and your wife are a inspiration to an old man like me..

Aaron, I found your comment about getting out of diesel mechanics interesting. I've been wrenching for a hobby ever since I was in high school and when the thought of making mechanics a career came to mind, I was afraid I'd lose the joy I feel when problem solving and eventually would learn to hate my hobby, because it was my full time job as well. Having seen the stereotypical mechanics whose cars never run right, I didn't want to become "that guy". I had never thought about the worry that comes with the customer and hoping your hard work held up. I can see how that would add stress and take away from the enjoyment just as much. That being said, I definitely enjoy the new series. Please stick with it!

Yeah know exactly what you mean. I work on my cars and I know I've done everything right but still have that feeling of doubt. So when someone asks if I can do something for them, I try to talk them out of doing it just because you never know. It's mostly family and friends but even as a favor things can go bad. That's something I don't like having over me. Great video like always.

I just found you guys. I seen your interview on In the Hanger. I have watched a few of your videos now and have to say I really like the content. I am also a diesel mechanic and working on my PPL. Nice work.

Doug S Too cool!!! Another diesel mechanic turning pilot! Thanks for seeking our channel out, there’s a ton of episodes here, all the ones with writing on the thumbnail, titled In the shop with Emily are the ones we’re most proud of! The others are vlog style updates on adventures or projects! 😇 again, thanks for coming over and also appreciate the comment!

Safety wire is defiantly an skill! I only use it for a few things on my dirt bike, but I break it mostly installing grips. I do double wraps in the three places and they seem to hold.

Love you kids, love your vids, love the way you, Emily, look at Aaron while he's in his pilot zone, keeping you both safe. And Aaron, I know what you mean about worrying about your job....I pull oversize loads and always worry about a mechanical failure happening that could hurt or kill me, and more importantly, others on the road. Kind of freaks me out sometimes. But that worry is what keeps you doing the required, repetitive checks, that you know will be fine but it still has to be done over and over. I'm sure that's especially important in flight also. Hey, OCD ain't necessarily a bad thing! LOL. Be safe!!

rondogwil Sure appreciate this kind comment!!! Yes, I look at Aaron with great amounts of admiration and confidence! I’m glad you can see it! It’s not always easy- working on stuff together, filming it, editing it- but comments like these make it so worthwhile! Thanks soooo much! Aaron says thank you too 😇

Just can across this video, I know it's old, but it's still cool. The carb looked like it could have fit one of my twin cyl small engines. Interesting.

If you see a little yellow Cub overhead someday, I'll drop in for a short visit! If LNC ever opens a restaurant again, there is always a gaggle of planes looking for $100 hamburger somewhere. For now, we're relegated to 3TO for that pleasure.
