Aretha bought carpet from the company I worked for. I talked to her on the phone, and took a message from "Miss Franklin" for the boss. Growing up in Motown, Aretha was the queen and her voice flavored our lives in a big way. It's fun to think I've spoken to royalty!

Was she living in Wabeek at the time? I am also, from Motown .

@@ML-un1oi My boss had her address under conceal. I know it was in Blmfld Hls. I remember the original Wabeek farm, and when the house and barn burned down.

Fabulous Aretha- the clarity of her voice! Cliff Richard was England’s biggest pop star before the Beatles and the British music revolution in rock. Always enjoy your show!

The one and only QUEEN of Soul Ms Aretha Franklin ❤️

HAIL TO THE QUEEN!! As a 72 yr old southern Caucasian, IMO she’s the greatest female vocalist I’ve ever heard. PERIOD! I remember watching her sing live on TV in the late 60’s. My Dad was watching and afterwards he said: “ I don’t know who she is, but that woman can sing!!” As he got to hear more of her, she became one of his favorite singers regardless of sex. She was, is, and always be the Queen IMO. Check out her “owning” the song Natural Woman (written by Carole King).

I like her early work but then she got away from Soul and I felt those later songs were mediocre. No reflection on her singing abilities. I feel the same way about Tina Turner. She was great when singing the Blues with Ike. Later on, not so much for my taste.

Aretha’s singing is soooo much more than her spectacular vocal instrument - every ounce of her is channeled through her singing. Try turning the sound down and watch - I feel I can “hear” her through eyes and the energy in her face and body. She’s just so present. Her playing is also so integral.

So thrilled you reacted to this. One of my favourite Aretha songs and performances. Scary talent. I mean actually scary. She's the greatest. She just is. A lot of people think about Aretha in her later years as a larger than life woman who was a big character, but you go back to her 60s and 70s albums and live performances and it's just on a different level. So much soul, so much musicality. Bringing the church into your front room. Love, love, love my Aretha.

My favorite!!! Mom’s vinyl of Aretha’s Greatest Hits was the first time I heard that song and I still love it better than all the others. I think it’s because she plays the riff AND sings it so soulfully ❤❤. When I got the same album on CD, this song just stayed on repeat 🔁 🎉

God rest her soul. She was incredible. She covered for Povrotti(sorry, I'm wrecking the spelling of the famous Italian opera singer) Two weeks notice, and had to learn the whole show in Italian. Super human. I'm sure you can still find it on KZfaq. It was probably 20yrs ago now.

Hey, y'all, check out Aretha's version of "The Weight," backed by Duane Allman. Also, please don't overlook Leon Russell on piano. He played on so many hit songs, it'll blow your mind. He was also a world-class songwriter ("A Song for You," "This Masquerade," "Back to the Island," "Tightrope," "Crystal Closet Queen" (written for Little Richard).

In Smokey Robinson's autobiography he tells of the first time he met Aretha Franklin when he was a kid. Many of the future Motown stars, like himself, lived in a 6 to 8 block area in Detroit, which was also the home of the Rev. C. L. Franklin, a very famous Baptist minister and civil rights activist of the day, who just happened to be Aretha's father. Smokey spoke of going into the parlour of the Franklin home and seeing a 3 or 4 year old little girl, (Aretha), playing away on the piano and singing WELL. So, Chi, I'm guessing that you're absolutely right about her informal, church-foundation piano training. And nobody STILL "takes us to church" quite like Sista 'Re. 💕

She recorded at muscle Shoals recording studios, using the house band the swampers, who were all white, which should surprise most people because I always figure she was from Motown. Lynyrd Skynyrd mentioned the swampers in their song Sweet Home Alabama. They won many Grammys, including some with her.

Maybe my all-time favorite double-sided hit record is Aretha's "Since You've Been Gone" b/w "Ain't No Way" (1968). These songs will give you chills. "Ain't No Way" has been covered by many artists including Jennifer Hudson but Aretha's version is on my Top Twenty All-Time Favorite Songs list.

This was Aretha's latest UK release when she appeared on the top rating Cliff Richard show. Thankfully the producers of the show sat her at the piano. This live version maybe better than the studio version. It was originally a US hit for Ben E. King in 1962. Ben and Aretha!! Two great voices. If I was this song I'd be flattered.
