So, Nova Scotia basically loves New England in general and Boston in particular for Adam's History Corner reasons. In 1917, the harbor in Halifax exploded in what might still be the biggest non-nucular explosion ever. New England sent trains with relief and medics basically immediately. Nova Scotia still sends a Christmas tree to Boston as thanks every year. It may not be a conscious thought anymore, but there's still a lot of regional goodwill there.

In the discussion about the Oilers and whether they would be the same under Woodcroff I have two points. There are two big changes that are driving the success of the Oilers and they are not so much related directly to Coach K but rather changes that came about because he was hired. The first major change is that they put Mark Stewart in charge of the penalty kill. He immediately cut Edmonton down to three penalty-killing forward pairs (RNH and Ryan, Janmark and Brown, and finally Foegle and McLeod) and two defensive pairs (Desharnais and Ekholm and then Nurse and Ceci) and stuck with it allowing these guys to build chemistry and familiarity. Draisaitl will take d-zone faceoffs but immediately switches out at first opportunity; they do not deviate from this unless one of those guys mentioned takes a penalty themself. The Oilers PK has gone from the bottom of the league to one of the best in the league under his guidance. The second major change was the addition of Paul Coffey who took over when Dave Manson left with Woodcroff. Paul Coffey has empowered his defencemen to make plays and seems to have them playing with way more confidence getting involved in the attack and pinching down the wall to maintain the forecheck. One of the subtle changes he made was that he has them sitting together in the locker room as he wants them to feel like a defensive unit and not just a collection of players. Add to that how hard the forwards have been backchecking and providing the defence options on zone exits and you have one of the best transition teams in the league moving the puck out of their zone so quickly they are hard to forecheck. If you look at the expected goals share from money puck the numbers are very impressive for the defence pairs. Bouchard and Ekholm are at 66.1%, Kulak and Desharnais are at 60%, and Nurse and Ceci who get the toughest quality of competition are at 52.6%. It is hard to imagine the Oilers' d-pairs have these numbers considering how the season started.

I know this is just out of left field but I seriously don't know what I'd do without this content. I'm not even a leafs fan. I just love hockey. I work a dead end job, night shift and you guys keep me company for the first couple hours and it really just sets a standard for how good my day is going to go. I don't have many friends who are into hockey as I am, so being able to understand all of the talk and want to contribute makes me feel happy.

As an oilers fan I say 85% of the improvement came from 2 spots 1)Coffey being hired to take over the D. Oilers D has been leaps and bounds better (primarily on the breakout) than I’ve ever seen in my 20 years of being a fan. 2) goaltending figuring out how to make some save The other 15% I attribute to the hockey gods finally letting bounces go our way (or at least end up as a save not a goal against)

I love watching the boys harsh on Detroit for being mid meanwhile the wings have nearly the same points and wins as the leafs this year lol. Also, the offense doesn't run through Kane. He has certainly added to it. But Larkin, Raymond, Compher, Debrincat, Perron and Sprong, Rasmussen have all had very good seasons so far. The Red Wings strength this year has been their depth. With improving defense and goalies coming down the pipeline I think the Red Wings win a cup before the leafs do. Unless the leafs get better depth and goal tending. We suffered with Larkin and perron out. Also for the leafs goalie issue. The 1/2 a/b should be Woll and Hildeby with sammy and Jones being extras.

Steve loves make excuses for every team but the leafs, the situations were basically identical, both teams had the same game postponed interrupting their prep, both teams were playing In front of a shaky goalie. Jesse 2 good shots dont make up for like 6 giveaways and terrible dump ins almost every play died in the offensive zone on his stick. Oilers were trash for 2 months and recovered stop freaking out. Colorado won a cup they are held to a different standard somehow people forget that. No one scores like Matthews as consistently, Mackinnon is not anywhere near Matthews defensively he's dynamic on the rush and has some fantastic passers and a strong forecheck, Matthews doesn't have the same, we need more for less yes, but we don't get the discounts because we don't have the coach or team with the pedigree.

You forget, that most teams do not have great contracts like the Makar one ;)

they can surround the core with all the toughness they want.... unless those 4 are willing to go and get dirty when needed, this team just wont win anything. they are the highest paid and spend the most amount of time on the ice.... the team flows around them. i blame keefe for his coaching with the line changes and such, but also feel for him knowing he doesnt have any real choice. they have 4 of the same type of players getting paid the big bucks... tavares isnt transitioning into a physical force... he needs to lead by example. start scrums, hit guys, be a pest... but that just isnt tavares... mathews has the body and the skill to be one of the most dominating forwards in the league... but hes not being coached that way... this team is just not built to be a serious contender... they may get lucky and win a round or 2 but thats about it. gotta move on from keefe... shouldve been keefe gone and dubas stay in the off season but this is where we are.... just floating around and hoping for the best..... not good enough.
