@@geoffsmith6373 I get your point that the plane is probably highly capable even with one engine out, but engine out during the climb after takeoff probably is a mayday. If for some reason the other engine also dies, it's not very good. And if one can go out, the probability of the other one failing out probably increases.

As a former Navy Pilot I have declared an emergency twice in 2,500 hours of flying, both with engine issues (ironically both compressor stalls). I can say without a doubt when I said the words “Mayday” over the radio my voice did not sound nearly as calm.

@@sdcoinshooter Thankfully you didn't have to join the silkworm club, but knowing you have backups on backups is always comforting. That being said, I'd imagine you were more worried about the chewing-out you might get if you had to punch out and they determined you could have saved it ("hey don't waste the taxpayer's money" or something to that effect). I myself wouldn't criticize a pilot who made the decision to eject, but the government might think differently, either now or when you had reason to think about making that decision.

Modern twin-engine airliners are designed to basically be able to shrug off an engine failure, heck it might not even kick off the autopilot (something that is notably sensitive to disruptions to the aircraft's performance). Besides, the number one thing you need to learn when dealing with time critical and highly stressful situations is this: If you panic, you become useless. Not a good thing to have happen to the pilot. So yes, in a way they do train to stay calm, cool, and collected. But even if you can tell they're stressed by the tone of their voice, chances are their capacity to make sound decisions remains intact. Because they've trained for this (and many other) emergency situation(s) very frequently, so they know what to do, when to do it, and why.

You know, with an aircraft that is showing such a frequency of issues that result in it becoming grounded, I'd call that grounds for giving it the next level up of check-overs just to make sure it's truly airworthy. After all, what's more expensive, checking over the aircraft thoroughly or having it unexpectedly become grounded many times in rapid succession?

Hello pilots. May I ask: ATC often asks for “fuel remaining in pounds”. It seems that, in contrast, flight crews are more aware of fuel remaining as an expression of time, not pounds. Are flight crews readily able to determine fuel in pounds, or must they calculate? If a calculation, why can’t flight crews simply state the time remaining, and allow (require) ATC to calculate? ATC typically knows aircraft type, should therefore have the data points necessary to convert,and I assume is not as stressed as the flight crew dealing with an emergency is.
@44R0Ndin
@44R0Ndin 2 жыл бұрын
On modern "glass cockpit" airliners, Fuel quantity in time and in pounds are both readily available from the computer, the only reason they know time more often than pounds is that the time till the tanks are empty is a lot more useful data to a pilot flying the aircraft than how much fuel in pounds it takes to keep the engines running for that long. But both are available, it just might take a little longer to pull that up.
@iTzNexXuS
@iTzNexXuS Жыл бұрын
Pilots are trained in all the emergency scenarios that may come up, as there are multiple reasons as to why fuel consumption rate will change flight to flight. For example, landing gear stuck down creates extra drag that burns fuel faster. Fuel leaks obviously will make you run out of fuel faster. An engine shut down will cause the aircraft to consume fuel slower. All kinds of different circumstances can vary the rates, and as the pilots are trained for each of these scenarios, there's no need for ATC to do the same. Pilots are able to do to conversion from time to pounds quickly, and most modern airlines can display both numbers. ATC needs to know both numbers in most cases as they need 1) to know how long the aircraft can remain in the air, this gives them an idea what they need to do to get traffic out of their way and for planning purposescro coordinate with ground and 2) they need to know fuel in pounds to pass along to ARFF in the unlikely event that the aircraft crash lands, they will have an idea of how big of a possible fireball they're dealing with.

I know the pilots and crew are the ultimate in professionalism. I always find it just a little odd. After a mayday because of one engine crapping out and seeking headings back to the airport, stating they can't climb very well, 200 people on board, and ground is ready for landing, THEN they need 10 minutes to do their check lists. WHAT? NOW is not convenient?
@AirTrafficVisualised
@AirTrafficVisualised 2 жыл бұрын
Just to clarify, when pilots during an emergency say they need to work through "procedures" or "checklists," they're usually referring to procedures and checklists that are mandatory as a result of the emergency condition. For example, the A321 ENG 1(2) SHUT DOWN emergency procedure is 5 pages and details all steps required to prepare the aircraft for a safe landing, as well as all systems that will be impacted.
