June 10, 2022. An American Airlines Airbus A321 operating Flight 1 from New York to Los Angeles is on approach to the airport when the pilots report a problem: they’ve selected their landing gear lever to down, but the gear hasn’t moved. The crew declare PAN-PAN and discontinue their approach. They work through the checklist to manually extend the gear via gravity - will the gear lower, or will the pilots make a belly landing at one of the world’s busiest airports? Watch and listen as the pilots and air traffic control coordinate to get the aircraft back on the ground safely.

The notion that there was to be a belly-up landing was an apparent assumption by the controller based on the crew report of being unable to lower the landing gear, What wasn't clear to the controller was that the crew still had to try the manual extension of the gear. That apparently worked and the flight landed on 24R (not 25L/R). Had the manual extension procedure not worked, it's highly likely the flight would have been diverted to ONT, so as to use one of their long runways, and avoid causing massive delay (for everyone) at LAX from having a runway closed with an aircraft gear-up on it. Back in the mid-1990s, I had a 737 with an actual gear issue (one main partially extended) on a BUR arrival, and I diverted it to ONT over LAX for the same reason.

Whether the plane gets diverted is on the PIC. Capt will decide if he even wants to go to ONT. And, plus as PIC now you gotta talk to the company and figure if ONT is a viable option considering mx facility, company operation personnel etc. ATC can suggest where to divert but PIC dictates where his/her plane gets to land
@markmonse5285

@@JamesKordent Some years ago, TWA had a 767 with a actual gear problem (i.e. not an indication issue) inbound to STL. The flight got diverted to very nearby Scott AFB, because TWA didn't want to effectively screw their own hub with a disabled 767 tying up a runway for several hours. Yeah, MX had to do a field trip to recover their aircraft, but that was much cheaper than the costs of diverting/delaying other flight from the irregular operations. Short of an emergency that involves an immediate need to get on-deck (ex. fire), ample time time exists to determine where the best place to plant the aircraft is. A flight's PIC might not have all the needed info to make that determination, but coordination with his dispatcher (again, a non-fire situation) would best ensure the correct decision gets made.

Someone had been recording the emergency ATC freq live; Tower advised AAL1 on final approach that their gear appeared extended. The gear can be seen extended with the main gear doors still open as a result of the manual extension procedure. Upon landing the gear doors struggle to close but remain open. Nonetheless, the aircraft, crew, and passengers made it back safely. Those pilots were a class act!

Awesome job -- again!! Thank you for the additional ADS-B info at the end -- something new I learned! Also, at first I thought the controller confused his words, saying, "Belly up landing", which, of course, conjured in my mind a 180° barrel-roll, and landing upside down... a very cool safety trick to keep the engines from separating (wink, wink)... anyway, I digress... When I heard the *other* controller repeat the phrase, it became clear (to me) that it meant "Belly landing, gear up,", or, specifically, "Belly, [gear-]up landing." Which, of course, is worst-case if the gear couldn't be lowered & locked. Again, great job!!

6:55 this is the same process we do at Boeing on the field when testing gear related work before we deliver our aircraft. It's really the only practical way to do it. We call it a "gear swing". The weight of fuel the airplane has onboard also has to be accounted for so we'll pump fuel from one tank to another to balance it out prior to jacking.

The flight crew did an almost excellent emergency. As noted by other comments the flight crew did not give the airport (ATC, first responders etc) needed information on WHEN the landing gear was going to be extended by the alternate method. The ground crew was, at first, working on the assumption that there was going to be a belly landing. A rehash of this emergency would have the flight crew announcing that they would extend the gear on final (short final, long final, don't have their checklist in hand) for ground personnel planning. And ATC asking (for clarification) when will the emergency extension take place. Falls into the same logic/philosophy as 'check gear down'. Otherwise, 5 star to ground, ATC, and flight crew. All emergencies should turn out to be boring!

My very first flight ever had a problem like this - thanks for the vid - helps understand the situation. In our case, they lost the hydrolic fluid; prepared us for crash landing, but got the gear down manually at the last minute. Funny thing - since it was my first, didn't think it was so unusual - even the prepping for landing - I thought maybe this was how it was on ever flight. Only when we actually landed and saw all the emergency vehicles did I think to be scared - lol

Backseat pilot; It would have helped and cut down on the initial back and forth with tower had the AA pilots simply stated, “Landing Gear issue, going missed, request vectors for an area to troubleshoot.” Second, they had plenty of fuel, go to the the hold area, try lowering the gear there so as to take as much guess work out of the equation, thus helping ATC and Crash/Fire. Thirdly, SoCal even tries to suggest and help out suggest a different runway. The AA pilots chose the worst possible runway. …Pilots’ score 6/10, ATC’s score 10/10
@SAber_Pilot
@SAber_Pilot 2 жыл бұрын
What makes you think there was any guess work at all on the pilot's side? Once they completed the (very short) "alternate gear extension" procedure and see down and locked indications the issue is gone. Going out and circling wouldn't have accomplished anything. Granted there was clearly some miscommunication between them and ATC as to the severity of the problem.

I think it was more that he didn't seem to ask for confirmation of the gear being manually extended on downwind (or it wasn't included). FWIW, "gear up" landing TYPICALLY refers to landings where the pilot "forgets" to lower the landing gear, while "belly landing" means there is a mechanical failure of the gear to properly lower. I was observing one landing(standing behind the pilot) at NAS Keflavik back in the 70's (USAF EC-121) when the rook copilot called gear down and locked. Aircraft commander, flight engineer, and I all saw 3 red, showing gear up, and the pilot ordered "repeat pre-landing checklist" The co-pilot repeated "Flaps set, BMEP 40 (Brake Mean Effective Pressure), 3 gear down and locked". Still seeing gear up, the A/C turned to the flight engineer and said "figure out the landing roll for a "gear up" landing". The co-pilot saw his mistake, slammed the gear down, and greased into the SMOOTHEST landing I ever experienced. 3 days later on t hat same aircraft, the left landing gear snapped on takeoff and 40,000 pounds of 115/145 aviation fuel exploded under my bony white ass. With full fuel for a 14 hour flight, the Connie didn't "explode", but she was an engulfed bitch by the time we got TF out. Had the tanks been empty (like at the end of a flight), we'd have gone up like a hand grenade.

This was because at the time of the comunication, they were unable to lower the gear on approach and didn't went yet through the procedure to check and try to lower the gear. This was obviously not a belly up landing. The failure was both LGCIU's ( Landing Gear Control Interface Units). The FO missed that comment when the controller mentioned it. The reason why RWY 24R was requested was the ILS was out for 25L, and the ILS (lower mins) was available for 24R. They were shooting the RNAV approach to 25L but the weather was close to minimums. Did not want to risk a go around with low ceilings at LAX with the gear out and unable to retract it. Manual gear extension worked and the landing was normal on 24R. LDA is 8926' on 24R. If the gear had not come down, a longer runway would have been requested. Gear had to be pinned on the runway by maintenance for the taxi in. Air Force two was about to take off after the landing, so there was a delay. I know this because I was the Captain on this flight.

Aircraft radios use analog AM modulation on the VHF band. Be assured the quality sounds way better to the pilots and ATC on their costly professional radios. What we hear is recorded by aviation enthusiasts using hobby equipment that may be located far away from the airport. It is not in the interest of safety to switch the standard. With digital, it requires a minimum signal strength to decode. With analog a weak signal will be scratchy but you will still hear it.

WHAT??? He calls ‘PAN PAN PAN’ then requests a return for landing but didn’t complete the ‘Failure of Landing Gear to Extend’ checklist? Then he says he doesn’t think they will get the gear down so they’ll need an inspection on the runway after landing. Do ya think? He should have held somewhere until the checklist was completed then either land uneventfully or request assistance when the gear failed to deploy. They had 2 and a half hours of fuel. What’s the rush guys?
@AirTrafficVisualised
@AirTrafficVisualised 2 жыл бұрын
The crew did complete the relevant checklists, and the gear did extend prior to landing. The pilot said that they thought the gear WOULD extend and lock, but in case it didn't, they declared PAN-PAN and requested an inspection.
@billyjack3361
@billyjack3361 2 жыл бұрын
No. you need to listen again. At 2:18 he clearly says ‘we’re assuming we won’t get the gear down’ and they will need to stop on the runway and have an inspection. He also said they hadn’t run the checklist yet. The second contact at 3:15, while on downwind, the pilot said they still hadn’t run the checklist but the gear SHOULD come down. Even the tower advised other traffic that a belly landing was expected on 24R. At 4:24 SOCAL asked to confirm they wanted to belly land on 24R. The pilot responded affirmative. As I said, running a checklist while in the pattern was a poor decision. With plenty of fuel there was no need to hurry the landing. All of what you said did happen, but you have the time line of the events all wrong.

@@billyjack3361 Man, a lot of backseat driving here.... -First timestamp he is almost certainly saying "assuming we WILL (We'ulll) get it down." and the caption is wrong. Why on earth would he be talking about an inspection if he thought they were about to do a belly landing? -Second timestamp confirms my above point by saying "I'm pretty sure it should come down once we do that" -Clearly a miscommunication on the belly landing situation that AA1 didn't hear or understand on the radio or I assume they would have corrected. The alternate gear extension procedure is 5 steps long and would take maybe 30 seconds to complete. They could have done this at any point during this sequence and we don't know exactly when they did it. To say they hurried up or to actually believe they thought they were going blindly into a potential belly landing is asinine.
@billyjack3361
@billyjack3361 2 жыл бұрын
@@SAber_Pilot No backseat driving here. What’s hard to believe is even with the video and communications showing time stamps and captioning, you refuse to agree that what I said is accurate. Amazing. Also, there is no guarantee that the alternate gear extension checklist will work. Hardly 30 seconds. As I said AGAIN, doing a checklist for inoperative gear in the pattern is foolish. Asking ATC for a hold over the Pacific while running the checklist would have been a much better decision in my opinion. BTW. We DO know when they ran the checklist. When downwind. Also, I never said they were blindly going into a belly landing…You can’t make stuff up to make your argument sound better.
@SAber_Pilot
@SAber_Pilot 2 жыл бұрын
@@billyjack3361 I refuse to agree because what you said wasn't accurate... They DID think the gear would come down and the pilots at no time thought they were preparing for a belly landing. If they had, there would have been much more of the additional steps you describe happening. There was obviously a big communication issue between ATC and AA1 regarding the severity of the problem. It's a half-page checklist and it is 5 steps long. Only the first two steps of which are actually manipulating something. There was more than enough time to enter a hold and assess if it didn't work.

@lyaneris
@lyaneris 2 жыл бұрын
Some small corrections: it's the flight number/callsign used for the flight, not the tail number. Also, the callsign has a maximum of 4 numbers or letters after the name. The tailnumber is mostly used for general aviation planes and in the US it starts with N(ovember). Assuming AAL has this plane registered in the US, it's N followed by a sequence of numbers. If it was (hypothetically speaking) registered in Germany, it would be D-A (for two engined jet above a certein weight) followed by 3 letters.
