I wanted to mix up my content a little bit and I figured, what better way to use my unique brand of judgemental gaze than to read the top posts on one of the most entertaining subreddits out there: r/AmITheAsshole? Check it out!

I think the weirdest thing about the 9 year ols punishment is how crowdsourced it is. Could you imagine going to a house on halloween to be met with a 9 year old bawling and begging you not to take his candy while his mother demands you do? It would make me super uncomfortable and part of a moral situation I never needed to be a part of.

Eh punishments like that worked great for me but not every situation warrants equal judgement. Then again, you probably aren't that great of a parent letting reddit and youtubers decide how to raise your kid and your relations lol
@sas911
@sas911 2 жыл бұрын
@@PlsDontReadThis123 I think the punishment of "halloween is now over, that attitude doesn't fly." That makes sense, and is a suitable punishment. Her punishment was literally "I'm going to now have you watch as other kids take your candy". The only reason it gets any credit, is because the kid completely unprompted says "they're taking too much candy", and then she can tap her forehead and say "ah ha, I've got you there my child you have seen the error of your ways through my ingenious ploy". What was her plan if the kid just sat there bawling their eyes out? "Hey, stop crying watch the kids taking your candy, would you uh, say they're taking too much? heh"

Unfortunately the nuclear family is an inadequate institution for imparting these values to children. In fact they reinforce Capitalist ideals of hierarchy and greed through their very structure. That is why if we are to work towards a better future we need to end the nuclear family structure and raise and educate all children in a communal based structure from birth.
@loreleiflare7388

@@goaway9977 This is actually kind of a cute take. I do think the nuclear family structure is sort of wonky and encourages a sorta antisocial "our small family unit vs. the world" attitude sometimes. I know we're just goofing, though. It's more the suburbs' fault than the family's, anyways. :P

Re: the Halloween kid, I think they are the asshole, not because they shouldn't have made the kid give the candy away (kind of based honestly), but because it was weirdly public. Like, the kid was probably sitting on the porch wailing about wanting to keep their candy in front of everyone who came up. It's a little close to public shaming. Plus, imagine all those kids and parents who just want to have a nice Halloween, and now it's all uncomfortable because they have to steal it from a crying child.

24:22 I’m not a parent, but I was a child. When you punish your child and they don’t understand why, it just looks like you’re hurting them to be spiteful. There’s no way a 9 year old kid is able to parse in his brain the sociological consequences of being greedy, and taking away all of his candy and handing it out certainly isn’t going to help him do so. In fact, it’ll just shut off all reasoning in his brain and all he’ll feel is rage and sadness over his mother giving away his candy. That’s not how you teach a lesson to a 9 year old. Also, there’s only so much of that lesson that CAN be taught until his brain is developed enough to understand it more. Like. The whole comment section on that post is making me squirm. Why do people feel the need to be so fucking mean to their kids, and why does everyone think it’s okay?

I am a parent of a 10 year old kid and at that age they absolutely are able to understand the consequences of greed on others. As NL says instinct just takes over sometimes which is why we don't hold them to the same standard as adults. Having said all that though, this parents punishment is too extreme in my opinion and you're right that the rage and anger this would induce in the child is actually detrimental to them learning from the experience.
@mos5678
@mos5678 2 жыл бұрын
No I def think that kids of that age are capable of understanding how if someone takes to much there will be less for others. We are taught as toddlers to share and take turns and most of us understood it early on. This kid needed a lesson in empathy since grubbing behavior like that should be dealt with early. That said... I do agree that giving it away to other grubbers might be a bit to far and that simply witholding the candy would've been enough.
@TheInfectous
@TheInfectous 2 жыл бұрын
it wasn't really the impacts of being greedy, he was told to correct his behaviour and he refused while also disrespecting his parent, those are pretty clear/fair rules for a 9 year old imo. I do agree that giving away his candy post-taking him home is just not useful at that point, if she was trying to teach the "don't be greedy" lesson it def doesn't come in the time of punishment... Though I don't think it's particularly mean what she did either, probably well within the standard deviations of punishments we'll all end up giving our kids tbh, parents are humans too and prone to going to far occasionally or not far enough. The comments are def a little insane but not because they're mean. Their assumption of a 9 yr old is that he's a borderline sociopath that while being upset is thinking how he can use it to his advantage in the future or that he's orchestrating a public outburst to "test the boundaries." But eh, makes sense, I would imagine that sub is full of self-righteous teens who just realized how good it can feel to indulge in perceived "justice" of imagined scenarios.

I through a tantrum at my 8th birthday. my grandma had bought me a Rower Ranger action figure, but it was one of the badguys. as punishment my birthday celebration was canceled, my cake was taken away and all my birthday gifts from family were taken back. i never got those gifts back and even at 8 it taught me a lesson that made me a better person.

A 9 year old is just a larger 5 or 6 year old. The only thing the kid "learned" that night was that his mom was mean to him and ruined halloween. Kids that age are all about "fairness" but extremely slanted towards "fair to me". That's not something you can learn on the spot either, some kids are naturally more empathetic, but that's not the norm. If the 9 year old had seen other kids take more han two, either that year or past years, fair for him would be to do so as well. Punishing him like that on a big night he has been looking forward to will only have negative consequences. What the mom should have done is to have that talk well before and just prior to trick or treating, about what the rules are and what is and isn't fair. She should not be talking about good parenting or consequences when she had failed from the very start by not priming a litteral child about what is expected of him before doling out punishment as if she caught him pulling legs off a spider. Ending the night prematurely is fine and acceptable punishment for him acting out. But only if the kid got a warning that the night would end if he didn't apologize for his outburst and promised to behave. Leave it to reddit to actually believe that having a 9 year old give away candy on halloween is the only thing preventing the kid from becoming that trad that bullied them for being in the anime club at school.

In reference to the 9yr old, bc my kids aren't far at all from that age (I have a 16 and 11yr old, the 11yr old has always been the one that defied rules the most); the mom went too far. I would have ended Halloween early and they could get their candy the next day. End Halloween early for being rude, and holding the candy a day for being greedy and taking too much candy. Reddit always thinks kids should be able to logically approach every situation like a 30yr old, it's very weird. 9yr olds is when real world consequences are actually becoming apparent, like outside of the family bubble. The kid knows he shouldn't have been rude, yes, but he doesn't understand how greed effects others. Sheesh.

But that was the point of handing out his own candy. Seeing others take so much of his candy made him realize that it doesn't feel good being on the receiving end. I don't think ending Halloween early would have done anything, just made them feel like their parents are anti-fun. Putting a lesson onto the end of it, and having the child actually learn the lesson (which I'm amazed with!), really solidifies that there's a reason you shouldn't over indulge on other's generosity. But, fair, I'm applying adult logic to something a kid won't have the capacity to internalize. I still think a grain of empathy or moderation will stick around in that kid from that event.

re: the antique store: who the hell has tippy-toe-height shelves in a shop full of old-ass shit that shatters when you drop it from any sort of height? and not only has those shelves, but puts the very expensive, very fragile things on top of them? that shit just sounds like a gotcha, "you broke it and now you're in debt" scam. idk if that's fraud or something, but shady asf.

Handling a vase with hands that sometimes twitch, but not right now = Handling a vase with vaseline covered hands? Okay, what's the equivalent of handling the vase while the hands are actively warning you that they're about to twitch? Because I think *that's* handling the vase with vaseline covered hands.
