I'm willing to bet that the Entitled Mother is one of those people that books herself an expensive ticket and then claims that something happened with the booking for her kid to emotionally blackmail whomever is in the seat that she wants into giving up the seat.

NTA because of the fact that while you didn't pay for the ticket yourself, your boyfriend did and he's a platinum client who does business with the airline and if you chose to do the right thing and offer your seat to the woman's son more out of being pressured than out of kindness, your boyfriend would have taken his business elsewhere and the management of the airline would have been upset because of it, so you did the right thing and you shouldn't be punished by the attendant or the mother because of it.

My main thing is… how did the mom and flight attendant know she didn’t pay for her own ticket? I don’t think the post ever mentioned her saying she didn’t pay for it to the mom and flight attendant only that it was her first time in first class. And how the flight attendant kept glaring and ruining ops first time flying first class isn’t acceptable, boyfriend should have gotten the flight attendants name and called the airline to explain what happened and complain because that kind of behavior isn’t acceptable. You asked, she said no, that’s the end of it you don’t get to ruin someone else’s experience just because you don’t get your way. And why would the attendant be so invested in a stranger? If I had to guess the mom was probably her friend and paid for two economy tickets because the friend said she’d get her upgraded to first class but the seats were full and resorted to trying to pressure someone who looked like an easy target.

Could be the mothers fault or whomever booked the flight first her. But it’s never a person with that seat paid for fault. If they would have upgraded her (OP) to first class, then yes she should give the seat back and the airline owes her compensation because they upgraded her, she didn’t ask. But she was sitting with someone or a few seats away. Where was the woman who wanted her to switch seats with sitting? Who bought the tickets first? I’ve never rode in first class, yes I would enough it. My only time I ever rode in a limousine was to my dad’s funeral. My family rented an RV and drove across Canada for my dad’s funeral. I’m the funeral package it came with a couple of limousines. We didn’t have car, so mom had told us we would be going in the limo. My sister, who also cane with her family, but in their van, wanted us to give up our seats and drive their van. I refused, because she had already had a few limousine rides and her one of her children had too. And they were all adults. Luckily mom was able to have another limousine at the funeral homes cost. My parents had prepaid their funeral expenses years before. Because of Covid, mom’s funeral was not what she had paid for and the estate wasn’t reimbursed.

NTA. If you gave up your seat it would've been rude to the boyfriend since he paid for the seat, just because you didn't pay for it doesn't mean it isn't a waste of money because someone did pay for the seat and that someone gave it to YOU. Your name is on the ticket so it's yours and that's final

Absolutely not the AH. Why didn't they ask someone else in first class you deserved to enjoy the experience just as much and he did. As a mother I get wanting to share those experiences with my children, however I'm also very dedicated to paying attention to detail and she should have ensured his ticket had the correct seating and then held the airline accountable. And set with her son either in business class having them comp her for the difference or waiting for another flight with first class seating.

Booking error my foot. I’d bet quite a little that she has done this before. As soon as she checked in she would have known and could have tried to sort it out before boarding. And who on gods green earth would pay for first class and then meekly accept going into economy without being paid for the downgrade. Until you mentioned it neither knew that you hadn’t paid for it yourself. Had something similar but totally different. Parents and child came late onto a free seating flight. They’d come in clutching their duty free bags. I had an aisle seat and there were two free seats beside me. The mother walked up and said I should move because the family wanted to sit together. I told her that if that if that was so imperative to them they should have skipped duty free and boarded sooner. She wasn’t happy and flight attendant agreed with me. You did nothing wrong.

A first-class ticket could be anywhere from $300 to $19,000 depending on where you're going if someone bought you a $300 necklace are you just supposed to give it away cuz somebody else wants it not to mention that flight attendant was so unprofessional crap like this irritates me

If woman really wanted her son to experience first class she could have let him have the first class seat and she take the economy seat.
