S1; Steves crossing a line that should’ve never been crossed. OP’s speaking facts when she said “just b/c you don’t have your own family doesn’t mean you could take mine,” b/c that’s exactly what he’s doing. Dude couldn’t even commit to OP yet still expects to tag along her family b/c he’s alone 🙄 get tf out of here. He needs to actually leave & the family needs to know their places.

I'm going to be the devils advocate here and say OP is out of line. 1) They were together for 8 years and he said more than once how he felt about marriage, OP didn't listen. 2) There's no reason OP has to marry. If she and Steve were otherwise a happy and solid couple, obviously things are working already. But she decided a ring is more important. 3) She knew her family had adopted him because he didn't have one. That doesn't change when she decided she was done with him. I hate to break it to you, but blood isn't the most important part of being family. 4) Op has no right to try and dictate who they choose to spend time with. 5) Alex is so far out of line, he's probably permanently damaged any type of future bond with OP's family. You need to remember, an 8 year relationship compared to a less than 4 month long relationship. He shouldn't have opened his mouth at all. 6) OP has every right to not attend the party, that's where her opinion and choice ends. She made the decision to walk away from 8 years because of jewelery, now she has to deal with the consequences.

@@caitlinkehler2708I disagree with you on a few points. Op had every right to break up with Steve due to him not wanting to marry her, if it's a deal breaker for her that's how it is. The family should have asked op if she was comfortable with them still having a relationship with Steve as that's the decent thing to do and the bare minimum expected from family! I agree that op should have left sooner when she found out Steve wasn't going to marry her and I also agree that Alex was out of line for getting involved in this. The family should've uninvited Steve as soon as op brought it up and made it clear that Alex was still not invited as that's the decent thing to do.

@@garthwells3781 Hard disagree. OP isn't the only one in the family. If her niece likes Steve more than she likes OP that's on OP. At that point Steve is family. Being 8 years together he is just as much family as any cousin or aunt that you don't see everyday. The only thing he doesn't have is a blood connection. So do adopted children not count as family all of a sudden?

Steve wasn't the AH the minute Alex git into his face. The family could've handle it better with the ex but OP is no angel in this story.

Story 2 : anyone thinks op is kind of an AH? Like not for walking down the niece down the aisle, many uncles do that. But for dismissing his wife like that? I kind of feel bad for the wife coz it’s been 26 yrs and still op seems more attached to sister’s family than his own wife. He says he definitely is not biased and all, but for his words it seems like he is.

Definitely, he's just dismissing her feelings. I really wanna hear the wife's side because I think she really has a lot to say.

@@mariiiax yes, I do too. I mean, even from ops perspective, I still am on the wife’s side, if the wife actually makes a post about her side, I’m pretty sure everyone will actually be on her side indefinitely.

What is weird about giving away your niece that you’ve loved and cared for her whole life. My father gave my cousin away at her wedding. We were all so happy and joyful for her marriage. I do not understand, but I don’t have the whole story

Hi guys I need help I recently posted this on reddit but I really need help AITA for not wanting to wear a dress my mom made after she got mad at me for asking a question about it? I'm going to be 15 soon, so my mom was making me a pink dress for my birthday. When I tried it on, I noticed it had blue thread, so I asked her, "Blue thread?" I don't know much about making dresses, so I thought she couldn't add the pink thread after using blue because it would break. She got really upset and started complaining, saying, "Do you even think that it could be blue? Don't you see the pink thread? It's JUST TO SEE THE THREAD ON THE DRESS" and pointed to the pink thread next to the TV. I felt bad and started crying while she was fitting the dress on me, but she said nothing. I felt so bad that I said, "I don't want anything anymore," and took off the dress. She then said that if I didn't wear it, she would never forgive me and I wouldn't be her daughter anymore. I replied, "Do whatever you want," and then she started screaming and crying, saying that I'm so ungrateful and that she stayed up late making the dress for me. My mom has always hated my dad's family because they were bad people, and she said I was evil and rotten inside because I had it in my blood. I told her that she always used me to get closer to my dad and get along with him, since their relationship was not really good. I also remembered her trying to drown me twice and reminded her of that once. She asked me to forgive her, but I said I'd forgive her only if she started treating me right, exactly how she treats my little brother. She agreed but never even tried to treat me better. We started arguing, and she was always screaming. My brother was yelling "STOP!" but I couldn't hear much. My brain felt like it was cracking, and out of anger, I threw my brother's tablet on the ground (it had a thick 10cm cover, so it wasn't damaged). I wish I was my brother because he has the life I've always wanted. He is autistic, but he has a nice class with a lot of friends. At his age, the only thing I could wish for was having a single friend. He's white, a male, and overall, my mom loves him, although he does nothing but stay on the internet without helping at home at all. Yet she complains about me not helping her "enough". I don't help a lot, in fact, but I do help a little like any other teenager. So, AITA for asking about the thread color and then not wanting to wear the dress after my mom's reaction?

Story 1: NTA for telling she’s not comfortable about steve coming. Honestly , seems like that Steve strunged along op for so many years and if she didn’t get drunk and ask him that qstn , he would’ve strung her along for much more time. And ops family is siding with him ? Fine, I don’t think it’s wrong for them to stay in contact with Steve considering he’s been with them for 8 yrs. But family chat group, And personal trip invites ? Feels like a line crossed. Contact and occasional texts ,calls are fine I guess and op can’t fault them for having contact coz it’s their life and maybe it’s ok if they don’t cross boundaries and make Alex and op bad guys.(I still don’t like the contact too tho, I believe they should go no contact with him ,but well, apparently one can’t dictate other people’s decisions.) But these people took it up an extra notch. But I do feel like Alex shouldn’t have gotten in Steve’s face even if his intentions were to stick up for himself and op. Also, Alex doesn’t sound too nice, more like maybe a little obnoxious too,but can’t say from only this much context. Seems like op knows how to pick them guys up😂

They said Steve told OP more than once how he felt about marriage. She probably assumed he would change his mind. This is why I think people put too much emphasis on getting married. OP threw away what appears to have been a solid relationship over a ring.

I suggest you improve your reading or listening comprehension or both. Also, after 8 years he is pretty much family, no such thing as family being left to the side just because they're not together now. I understand that america has destroyed the idea of family but even divorced couples still stay in touch and their families do too.

@@MrDeadYeti excuse me ? If you can’t say anything nice, just don’t say anything at all about me , especially since you don’t even know me . I can type vile comments about you too if I want, but I choose not to since I don’t even know you. English is not my first language,I can speak and write in 4 languages and English is just one of them. So pardon me if my “comprehension skills “ are not at the same level as yours , as I’m inclined to believe your comprehension skills are not in the same level as mine in case of the other 3 languages I speak. Now, I did not say they should cut full contact, I said I think I would go no contact for now,but I can’t fault them if they continue to speak to Steve ,if you read once again . The only reason I said NTA is bcoz I wanted op to move on and the family is not allowing that by inviting Steve on a personal trip. They can revisit this after a few weeks or months and op and Steve and their family can come to an agreement about Steve going on personal trips and also establish certain boundaries. Till the, they can meet up with Steve for lunches or something like that and be in contact , so that op can fully move on . I also did say I think Alex is not exactly a good one. If you don’t have anything nice to say to me, just comment about the situation in the post, not on me.

@@caitlinkehler2708 just because she wants to get married doesn’t mean she’s a bad person, and same goes with Steve too,if he doesn’t want to get tied down to one person , that’s his choice, op made her choice. Also, how do you know it was a good relationship? Okay, let’s assume it was a good relationship, even then, Steve and op don’t seem compatible enough with their future ideas, so op cut it off. Maybe she thought he would change , and maybe he thought she would leave this idea. It’s better to separate than to be in a relationship where one person continuously pushes to get married whereas the other one constantly pushes not to. That relationship will become toxic in a matter of few weeks. Not all marriages end badly.
