I was surprised at how popular Netflix's live-action version of "YU YU HAKUSHO" was overseas, and moreover, there were quite a few people who had never seen the anime or manga who were posting reaction videos on KZfaq.

Yeah, some people liked it a lot more than I did, which is--of course--fine. For me, the tonal shifty from the anime didn't work.

A lot of people I've seen have suggested that they didn't think they'd get another season, so they just crammed all the high points of the series into what they could. Yu Yu Hakusho was one of my first series as an adult, along with Dragonball Z. The thing with shonen productions that I've found is that the combat scenes are frequently interminable. I found the Dark Tournament story line to be exceedingly tedious and really wanted the ghost detective story line to be more prevalent, but what I've heard is that the original writer didn't actually have a full plan and didn't know where he wanted to go with the story. Which, in my opinion, is unfortunate - a lot of the other story lines in that series were a lot more interesting. A lot of other fans though consider the Dark Tournament to be the best part. Interesting that you should mention Inu Yasha - one of my favorites along with Fruits Basket. Though Inu Yasha was a shonen story and had a lot of monster of the week-itis and some endless battles, to me it kept away from the excesses that I saw in the other shonen stuff I was seeing at that point. To your point about the juxtaposition of the real world and the fantasy world, I think Inu Yasha did well at this as well, with our main pair moving back and forth between worlds and Kagome bringing food and her long suffering bicycle with her when she went to the past. Female characters - at least the main ones - all seemed to have agency as well. I've always found it strange that Inu Yasha is categorized as shonen as it really seems to have broader appeal that what you usually (sadly) expect to be directed at adolescent males. I would love to see you break down the series - even the new one, with the kids, which I can't seem to get into. I would not like to see a live action of Inu Yasha unless they committed the time to doing the series right - or did an independent storyline, which the franchise has already done with it's own movies. Yu Yu Hakusho, imho, suffered from being so severely abridged.

Agreed. This seems to be a frequent complaint from fans of the anime/manga. I get that. But for me, an art object has to stand on its own terms, and this just doesn't hold up. I guess trying to please fans of a previous incarnation who are the built in audience for a medium which is financed differently and trying to do different things, is a double edged sword. But I also think that the tonal shift here from the original's goofy childlike qualities is a generic shift they weren't able to accomplish (compare trying to make the Hobbit movies into prequels for the LOTR movies instead of the goofy middle grade fantasy it was written as).

Thanks, already watched and agree, this is for teen boys (similar to a lot of action anime). I will say that I enjoyed it, I like mindless entertainment.

First, I liked it. I think it is very good. Hopefully it will be renewed for a second season. And there they can explore the detective aspect of the story. Now for my analysis of "the bad". It suffers from the same problem as other Japanese anime to live action adaptations. Too much story to tell, too little time to do so. And not knowing if they are going to have the option to continue it or not. Not necessarily something that would stop me from watching the series or movie. Reminds me of the Fullmetal Alchemist live action movies. The first one, not knowing if they were going to be able to continue it or not, tries to cram a lot in. And, just in case they can't continue it, they create a pseudo ending that won't be to the liking of the anime's biggest fans. Luckily, they later got financing to continue the story with 2 more films. Still not enough to tell the whole original story, but enough to try. The difference I see between the Fullmetal Alchemist adaptation and the Yu Yu Hakusho adaptation is that, in order to compress as much story as possible, both have to sacrifice something. In the case of Yu Yu Hakusho they sacrificed story in order to put in more action. In the case of Fullmetal Alchemist, they sacrificed action in order to put in more story. Hardcore fans, in both cases, will be disappointed. I, on the other hand, prefer to understand the circumstances and enjoy the final product. With its limitations... but almost always made with a lot of love for the original material. Something I don't see in Hollywood adaptations.

Yeah, I get that, and have heard similar comments from other people, and I agree with your comment, but for me the focus on action over story and character is a killer.

I watched the first episode and I liked it quite a bit. Since it's just 5 episodes I'll probably watch the rest even if it's like 90% action. Dated and cheesy sounds right up my alley. Sidenote, have you seen Alice in Borderland? I thought it was the best Manga adaption to date. Apparently it has been westernized a bit (I haven't read the Manga), so maybe it's not of particular interest to you, but to anyone interested in a less preachy, more fantastical version of Squid Game, this is the show to watch.

I actually really liked Alice in Borderland, but found the relentless bleakness demoralizing so I stopped after a few episodes. No fault of the show.

@@AndrewHartley Understandable, a lot of really, really horrible stuff happens in that show, especially in season 2. But the ending (minor spoiler) is actually as close to a happy end as such a story could be.

I liked it more than you did, but your criticisms are well founded. It could have been 10x better if there was more psychological substance to it. Yokai stuff is always appealing to me, but you really need to use some sort of dream logic to defeat those kinds of demons.

Hi there... if you are up to for an anime.. there is one you might like... just 11 episodes around 20 min long each... Not live action but kinda away from typical hero narrative with a deep look into some moral and live issues ...of course embeded with the usual fiction from any japanese anime.... INUYASHIKI ....if you would like to check. Very mature material for just being an anime.

I grew up with Yu Yu Hakusho and a fair number of other classic Shonen series, and for whatever reason (with rare exceptions), Japanese live action versions of such series tend to be absolutely terrible. I'm not entirely sure why. I think there's something similar to what we see with unnecessary Disney live-action remakes going on, where the work isn't really intended to stand on its own, and thus there's either some sort of intangible spirit that's lacking, or they try to draw *too much* on the original, imitating manga scenes where they might need to be adjusted in live action. Rurouni Kenshin is basically the only live-action version of a manga that I thought was excellent, and that's in large part because the characters were quite strong/interesting as *people* and thus intriguing beyond "good at swordfighting", plus they took the effort to really make the swordfighting choreography realistic yet stylized, in a way that you feel could be possible rather than go full CG. Unfortunate that Yu Yu Hakusho appears to be yet another "failed live action", but I suppose there's always hope! Inu Yasha is another series I grew up with that I think would be difficult to do justice in live action, in large part because of the large number of CGI monsters that would be needed. At the end of the day, I think creators need to remember that a work does need to stand on its own, and if that means cutting out material or adapting it when doing a live action, then so be it. Peter Jackson knew that very clearly when adapting LoTR, for example. (Sure, Tom Bombadil was a beloved character by some, but cutting him from the live action was absolutely the right decision)

Yep. I think the LOTR analogy is a really good one, and it makes me think about the train wreck which was the Hobbit trilogy, because I think there was a similar error there. Yu Yu Hakusho and other things (Inc Yasha included) were written younger. They feel kid-oriented. But when producers make love action adaptations they feel the need to age them up and darken them, make them some how more realistic. Sometimes (as with Hobbit) this just doesn't work. The result is a mess of fairy tale whimsy masquerading as hard hitting character driven drama.

@@AndrewHartley I think "darker" takes on stories can definitely work (the Nolan versions of Batman are a great example), but it has to be part of a larger vision, as opposed to doing it just because it's in vogue. In a sense, the inconsistency I see sometimes in stories that aren't sure what they want to be break the suspension of disbelief, which is rarely good for storytelling

"It feels like watching someone play a videogame." There are whole channels using this as a buisness model. Your description reminds me of the last seasons of Game of Thrones. You can't replace a good story with CGI, especially not bad CGI. On the other hand, if the story is good, primitive special effects don't matter, as the imagination of the audience will fill in the rest. There was a German TV SciFi series in the mid 60s, "Raumpatrouille Orion", roughly comparable to the original Star Trek series, but with a much lower budget. The control dashboards of the spacecraft sported - clearly recognizable- a shower head and a cloth iron. Did the fans mind? No, it became part of the cult.

Same with old school Doctor Who :) Great stuff. But yes, I'll take story over effects every time.
