I have read and enjoyed reading lots of books on Buddhism - popular and academic. Some years ago I discovered Thanissaro Bhikhu’s books. They are the most useful texts I have ever encountered for actual practice.

Buddhism is indebted to this man for all of his faithful and difficult work in translating and writing all he has over the decades.

This might be one of the most, straight to the point, clearly articulated, practical descriptions of the CORE Buddhists teachings in English. I always love Ajaan Geoff, but I will come back to this one again for reference. Thanks for sharing.

Our mission while sitting in meditation. Vipasanna meditation. When we become fluent in vipasanna meditation, we begin to realise the state of mind we are in. It is very important to know that state of conciousness so as to progress further. One must differnciate it clearly or how then one is going to progress without knowing. The path of vipasanna meditation is to calm the mind to the state buddhist call it samadhi which are vitaka (initial entry to first stage of calmness) that lead to vichara(sustaining of the first state of calmness) This initial state of calm is known as 1st samadhi. Upon one ability to hang on to this first samadhi, the mental progress will continue to develop further reaching the state of piti which is the second state of calmness. Usual meditator experience it say he feel like, floating, lightness, tear flowing and mind is calm without much problem to watch the breath. Then as one can maintain this state of mind with ongoing inbreath and out breath, one will reach the 3rd samadhi calmness of mind that spell bodily pleasure more stronger then before when in 2nd samadhi. Some meditator begin to feel very happy, some see bright light, some see mind sparking, some see shadow passing. These are strong concentration that bring about nimita from the mind that appear to be real but the meditator must not attached to it but continue to be mindful, free from attachment and to be calm. After this moment occur and if the meditator mind is strong are not disturb, distract, non attached, no delusion, non greed on this occurance, the meditator will be continue to progress to realize and aware that the breath become softer, subtle, disappear and nobody sensation feeling aslo disappear and here it is UPEKA. Very important state of mind to reach as one is like being in the moment of emptiness, nothingness, space Thinking still exist during this experience. Here very important not to get lost, gets excite, gets deluded and too many on going thinking will take you out of this upeka. So during this monent stay calm as you can see there is thinking on going but do not let thinking become master or you will be kick out of upeka. Stay calm stop thinking and be with the condition. During this moment while you are staying calm in upeka your mind or i shall say you 5 mental faculties are in behind making adjustment and trying to be balance to be upeka and if successful if it is auto able to gets balance(meaning greed, hatred, delusions are removed as that 5 faculties are capable to become balance or become neutral, when that happen, your mind will shuts down and you enter the streams of ariya. Sadhu sadhu sadhu This article is written out of compassion for one who seek the path so difficult indeed and this article is carefully written from the path that was reached as a gift to all vipasanna practioner from a sotopana. Excellent Bhante, such a grasp of the Dhamma just he speaks so so so fast and American English that words sound jumbled, slurred ...maybe anxiety?
@kathri1006
@kathri1006 2 жыл бұрын
A monk with thus level of practice, would not be operating from a place of anxiety, whether he feels it or not as he will be in a place of it not touching him, even though it does, in a paradoxical way. He is very clever and it is his conditioning of what his program is, but not from where he operates.

@Kathri 100 idealistic, aren't you? Everything is energy. His delivery of Dhamma is at a manic pace. It is obvious and its your own Ego dictating the response here, not panna. Also, this particular monk is a very vocal opponent of women becoming full precept nuns in the Thai Forest tradition. Facts. If you ever read the Suttas, this monk translated vast amounts from the Pali into English through his own perception/interpretation. The Buddha suggested we investigate, not assume...

@@fingerprint5511 Well, interesting. I still think separating the habit which comes from possibly speed of information processing at neuro linguistic pathways, that may possibly have karmic bent from eons and attributing it to a mental affliction like anxiety is erroneous. He just speaks fast and what he feels is his skill, which I feel is very developed. What one feels inside and what others label as, are too different things. Then again with strong meditation ability many inner drives can be negated, either at arising or while they operate in the mind, you are not afflicted by them. The ordination of women is an interesting point for many Buddhists. The traditional leaning ones, very reverential ones oppose through the understanding possibly, if one starts changing dhamma, in thousands of years what remains is nothing like the original. I can see their view. Also Buddha himself has said about how to behave towards what is allowed and not. The details are available in emperor Asoka's edicts on access to insight, in the library. In four ways he advised to consider. Whether they go contrary to the spirit of things he previously allowed and similar to things he previously not allowed ( in which case the issue is possibly not allowed, guided by the wisdom, not dictated by tradition, but one needs a lot of wisdom though)and you can see four ways of looking along these lines. As Buddha has previously allowed women ordination and it is societal factors that lead to demise of the women's dispensation, I feel it is correct to resurrect it. Yet I can also see the error in strong identification as women , men when there is no practical need along the path due to discrimination as such ideas, giving rise to imprisonment in ideas realm, when one on attempting to escape this onto first stage of liberation, as opinions, view points origins are very strong as a process of conditioning with deep roots in thanha, ditti, mana roots.

@linda1776 great advice, it helped enormously, with .75% speed, plus, I learned something by trying that. Who knew? Tx. It was still challenging, but, I got most of it. 🙂 Perhaps. I will LISTEN again soon. I need to put my mind in .50% speed for my distractions. 🙃
