In the midst of such breathtaking beauty, surrounded by the magnificence of nature, those Buddhist monks must have surrendered their lives to the Bodhisattva, their master and god, spending their lives in quiet meditation and prayer, and making a virtue of simplicity--- and soon, becoming an integral part of their awe-inspiring environment.
It takes but a moment to enter these caves, to close your eyes and conjure up the aura of the past. Listen to the chanting monks. Watch the murals and sculptures come alive under the magic fingers of those gifted artists. Feel the touch of Nature and the brush of the past.
It took the faith of generations and efforts of centuries to create these caves. We owe it to these unknown artists to study their works with the reverence they deserve.

I remember visiting the Ajanta Ellora caves when I was a kid with my parents. I remember my Dad said we could not take pictures inside the caves because the flash light would affect the paintings. They said that a hunter found the caves by accident. Now, I'm in USA, I wan't to go back and see the caves again. What a wonderful documentary. Just WOW! Narration - P.C. Ramakrishna. I thought he was an Englishman. LOL ! Amazing as well

What an ironic coincidence. Was meditating this morning...thinking back to my last time in Ajanta in 1992....having one of my many strange premonitions and small glimpses of a reality I still did not full comprehend. Only a Buddhist or a Hindu would be able to understand what I am talking about. How a Norwegian can sense such familiarity to a place he has seemingly never been to before. And here this documentary pops up on my feed... I need to go back there. Something in those caves and mountains are calling me back...

The caste system is a nonesense and its rejection is the best thing that could happen to today's India. But buddhism expanded amid a lot of conquests, suffering and taking advantage of royal patronage. And it vanished from India because if you neglect warring matters (and that involves attacking) others come and eat you alive. There is no caste in buddhism but the monastic hierarchy often behaves as some kind of aristocracy and causes a lot of abuses wherever it's given too much power. As you know, the Buddha himself advocated to not represent or pay cult to idols and prohibited images of himself, and 2 centuries later the people conveniently depicted him using iconography from Jainism. If you ask me, Buddhism should have no ties with anything, in the present, only self-supported secular communities accord wih what buddhism is supposed to be. And texts from all traditions should be studied but not grab any particular "sect" or "school". Self interpretation is important.

Never heard of these astounding spiritual and artistic works. It's on my bucket list to make my way here some day. Great writing and narration. I wonder why the creators walked away from it all. Strange too how it all was seemingly never visited after it was abandoned and locals never knew about it and British military happened upon it. I wonder about the hammers and chisels, what kind of metal they were made of. In the film it seems they are made of steel. I suppose then it was the iron age and they were made of iron. Does anyone know? It's harder for us modern era people to envision the potential of dedication and time and what bare hands can do. I wonder what the process was in creating such immense excavations into solid rock. Also to understand the meaning of devotion and spirituality and the impact that has. It is contrasted still with the strange abandonment of it all, the antithesis of devotion, focus, discipline, and the magnitude of the spiritual meanings behind it all. Maybe it was those very virtues that gave them the strength to simply walk away from centuries of effort. Thanks for creating this great documentary. I must return to it again to better grasp all there is to learn from it.

What a wonderfully narrated video. I would love to live in such a place for the rest of my life, cooking over open flames and foraging herbs and mushrooms in the wild, while daily maintaining and conserving the site. Buddhist or not, this is truly a world heritage site that should not be allowed to disappear.

Recent archeologists are rejecting the theory that all these magnificent caves carved 100 ft inside hard granite rocks were made with chisel & hammer. They were already carved out much earlier probebly at the time of the kailasha temple. The nearby Kailasha temple is an entire mountian carved from top down an impossible task with hammer & chisel.
