It's time to put an end to a myth that's been circulating around the internet for years. It's often said that Aji Charapita is the worlds most expensive pepper. Even reputable sources have been spreading this nonsense. I go through every step of the process to prove once and for all that Aji Charapita powder is no more expensive than many of the average pepper varieties.

Highest average culinary powder I could find was $40USD for 0.7oz. This comes out to only a bit over $2k per kg for seedless powder. For the work involved and possible losses, risks, investment.....not high enough a profit to be sustainable- even on a "boutique" scale in my opinion.

One year I said screw saving my habanero seeds. I dehydrated the seeds and all. I wanted to see if they were cooked to death so I planted about 10 random seeds. 9 out of 10 grew!

So after watching the full video your whole premise is it can’t cost that much because it’s takes too long and too many plants to grow enough? Seems your premise is off…

And the reality probably is, yes, people buy that stuff for that much money (they only buy gramms, not klios...), the people growing it, will earn a few pennies. And the middlemen get rich!

Really great video! I cannot believe you went through all that just to make this video for us - but I love it. The de-seeding would have killed me dead and turned me off peppers forever. :)

Watching this a year later after it was posting cuz I just grew my first plant. But I guess they cost as much as someone is willing to pay =] yet I heard the flavor or better for the spice level. I look forward to having them and sharing with friends.
