Here is the latest information about the lake. See description below Recent water quality testing data indicates that Chapala’s now pristine beach area perfectly meets criteria for development of a safe zone for aquatic sports and recreation. Contrary to a common notion that Lake Chapala contains some sort of toxic cocktail, results from recent water quality tests indicate that the level of its bacterial contamination is low enough to permit safe aquatic recreational activities. “Chapala’s water is three to four times cleaner than that found on California’s beaches,” reports Todd Stong, the U.S. civil engineer who has led an independently- funded testing project over the last seven weeks. “The lake may look muddy, but it is biologically clean.” Water samples were collected at several points along the north, west and south shores of Lake Chapala between San Nicolas and San Pedro Tesistan. Laboratory analyses were then performed by qualified professionals at the CETAC technological institution in Jocotepec. Standard methodology was followed to collect and examine the samples for fecal coliform bacteria. Lab reports revealed that 94 percent of the sites tested had amounts of fecal coliform colonies falling below acceptable limits established under Mexican, U.S. and international standards for the recreational use of water bodies. Mexico’s official norm, NOM-AA-042, is set to a limit of 240 colony units per 100 millimeters. Only one of 16 test sites - at the end of the San Pedro jetty - measured slightly above that range, at 290/100ml. Water drawn at the mouth of the Arroyo San Marcos, near Chapala’s old railway station, came close to the mark at 230/100ml. The remaining 14 tested well below the limit, from under 30 to 91 units. Thank you one more time for subscribing to our KZfaq channel Laurie I appreciate that very much we are excited about increasing our subscription and followers on KZfaq our goal is to have people share are you tubes on Facebook and of course on KZfaq. With the U.S. dollar currently at 21 and a half pesos have the prices in the Lakeside area risen accordingly ???
@JerryBrownTravels
@JerryBrownTravels 7 жыл бұрын
If we are getting 21 pesos for one US dollar bill how does that affect us? When you're buying things that come within Mexico the price is consistent within the last two years. As an example if you buy a taco dinner for 40 pesos two years ago you still will pay 40 pesos today. Now if you buy something that is important from another country then you will be paying more pesos for that item (a cellular phone, a microwave, television,) to day. If the raw materials are imported from another country to manufacture say a car you will pay more pesos then you did two years ago. So things like food, Labor, doctors, how Approximately the same price has to years ago. Yes Mexico prices has gone up. I notice also that you can get food cheaper especially at fast food restaurants (in United States mcDonald's, Burger King etc.) as an example you can buy a one dollar hamburger, one dollar french fries, one dollar apple pie etc. Now in a third world country the same hamburger would cost you $2-$2.50 and in a better restaurant could cut you five dollars with french fries.

Hi Jerry , Lorrie . We are planning to go there in February to March . We are fr Winnipeg , it it easy to get a house for rent there for at least for three months only . Instead of doing it on line . Oh yes we are already book for a month for the first time visit I book it on line but after that I want to see it my self to choice how's the neighbourhood how far is it to downtown so we don't need a car . The convenient just to walk to the plaza or to the market . Really interested on spending some months of our retirement there in Ajijic which I heard a lot that the weather is beautiful .Is it easy to find a place for rent there ? Thank you

February and March is the high season it is much harder to get a rental at that time. It's good that you've already booked your reservation in advance. During February March the weather gets a little cool ( this year lolas 45° at night but during the day gets up to 75°) Let us know when you're down here and if we're not traveling let's get together. Great video, my question to you is. Being that you are retired, how do you get your S.S check when you live there, is it direct deposited to a local back? I just want to understand how are you getting your money from the states there and what are the best banks to deal with.
@JerryBrownTravels
@JerryBrownTravels 7 жыл бұрын
welcome back Nelson. You ask how do we get our Social Security money down here.good question. Most foreigners deposit their Social Security checks in a bank in the United States and then they get a debit card from their bank in the (United States) They go to a ATM machine down here in Mexico and withdraw whatever they need. We recommend Charles Schwab's debit card because they do not charge any foreign transaction fee. There are other credit card companies or should I say debit card companies that you can use that don't have foreign transaction fees. I think typically would you would pay about five dollars to seven dollars for each ATM withdrawal.You use get a lower exchange rate That way. Some people Who qualify for a Mexican Bank ( to qualify you have to have a temporary visa or a permanent visa, A rental or lease agreement in your name, utilities in your name to get a Mexican bank account.) This is why foreigners just use a debit card and don't bother with a Mexican bank. but if you do get a Mexican bank it is easy to write a check from your bank in the United States and deposit it into a Mexican bank. There's about a 10 day hold on your money before idiot switch into pesos but it is not in dollars your money will be in pesos. I hope this is helped thank you again Nelson for subscribing to our KZfaq channel and making comments. Keep doing what you do it's appreciated by all. Jerry & Lori Brown

Another great video Jerry and Laurie, thank you! My wife and I are in our 50s and planning on spending 3-4 months a year in our retirement in the Chapala/Ajijic area. How difficult is it to find nice rental houses for that length of time? What would a 2-3 bedroom house with a pool and lake view cost approximately?
@JerryBrownTravels
@JerryBrownTravels 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you Peter for subscribing to our KZfaq channel Laurie and I really do appreciate that very much. Peter you will not have any problem finding a rental for 3 to 4 months during the winter months you will have less rentals to choose from but you still be able to find a fully furnished house. If you come down in late spring, summer or early fall you'll have plenty of selection of homes. We rented a small one bedroom furnished apartment with the Lakeview when we first came down here seven years ago for $350 a month. When you are looking for a Lakeview typically it's going to be more expensive I'm gonna say on the average for a two bedroom two bath pool Lakeview you're probably looking at about $650 a month and up. You can get a two bedroom two bath fully furnished with a swimming pool no Lakeview anywhere from $450 a month and up. The nice thing about the homes down here they're fully furnished so that includes all of your linens, bath towels, all the utensils in the kitchen turnkey move in. Some have better furniture than others that's what you look for when you start doing your due diligence. I recommend booking a hotel for three days and then start going to the real estate offices and seeing what they have for rent. This way you can check out the neighborhood, the house, and see if it feels comfortable. Laurie and I hope this is helped you. Thank you Jerry Lori Brown

kenny koester Car jacking and thefts have been reported, but not in my circle. I recommend having two cars here: one for touring (newer, reliable) and one for the local area (older and less valuable) since it will be damaged by everything from poor parallel parking to the stirrups from passing horses. Kids like to steal the valve stem caps from tires, vandalize, sit on parked cars, pry off hood ornaments, lift spare tires, and in the really dodgy areas, cut gasoline lines, and lift batteries and even whole engines out. All has happened to me or my friends in the past 5 years.

Thank you for subscribing to our KZfaq channel. I don't know about living in Mexico with a chronic illness. My wife and I have used the doctors here in Ajijic and Guadalajara and they have doctors specialize with chronic illness. The hospitals, clinics in Guadalajara are excellent and I think you would be able to receive excellent care for your dialysis. You would have to pay out of pocket for your treatment. Mexico does not except Medicare from the United States or Canadian Insurance. So you would have to pay your treatment yourself. I'm guessing but I would expect that you pay 50% less in Mexico then you would in Canada for the United States. Michael Morris Here is an interesting page about the lake. It states: "The water entering Lake Chapala from the Lerma River is highly polluted with heavy metals and other toxic substances as a result of insufficient wastewater treatment by the many industries operating near the Lerma River. Additionally, many of the towns around the lake release their sewage and waste water into the lake without treatment. The mandated “Federal Zone” around the lake, where construction is prohibited, suffers increasing invasion by landowners." www.globalnature.org/35127/Living-Lakes/America/Lake-Chapala/resindex.aspx

@JerryBrownTravels 7 жыл бұрын
Michael some clarification on the chicken prices. You're absolutely right it would be three $3.00 a pound but this is for chicken breast. . For a whole chicken it's $1.80 a pound More clarification on the chicken from my wife Lori to you Michael she says that chicken prices are not much cheaper here in Mexico but the quality is better. Also she says that vegetables are where you save the most on your food budget and fruits. Labor is cheap here so when you're able to buy things that grow here and the farmer doesn't have to buy things like Grain to feed their animals you save a lot of money. Also Michael where we live things are higher because the foreigners are able to pay more to help support the local economy. So the local people benefit and we benefit also it's a win win situation.

Chicken breast might be higher, but trust and believe that is as organic as it can get. No antibiotics used, worth the price. We have been to Mexico a couple times with our child who depends on insulin as he has diabetes type 1. His sugars have NEVER been stable, except the weeks we were in Mexico. They produce FRESH food. My child enjoyed fruits, poultry, Mexican dishes, candy, chips, etc and his sugars were excellent. I wish I could afford living there, for his health and ours. Thanks for sharing. Blessings

Excellent question. Thank you for subscribing to our KZfaq channel Laurie and I really do appreciate it. Last week on the news I heard that there was a dentist office in California where their water was contaminated and did serious damage to young children. I guess you really don't know the quality of the water when you're buying things especially from third world countries. We take precautions by washing all of our fruits and vegetables in vinegar and anti-bacteria product made especially for vegetables and fruit. That's one of the challenges that you have when you live in a third world country especially a third world country. So my thoughts are it's better to take that extra time and percussion wherever you live and wash all year fruits and vegetables before eating. Thanks again for subscribing to our KZfaq channel Jerry and Laurie Brown

When I lived in Texas I used to walk alone as a young girl over the border and no one ever tried to bother me except to flirt in a store. I rode around border towns in a taxi which was a van with wooden bench chairs and men carring chicken crates no one was ever anything but polite.
