All you really need is one growth bud and enough space to make a cleft cut. I've gotten more success using these shorter scions, and this method gives you more scions! Next time you look for scion wood, simply find one or two growth buds, and cut about an inch or two below those buds.

The scion can be from a non-fruit bearing tree, as long as you know that tree will eventually make good fruit.

I don't know about you but my seedlings have been hit and miss, disappointingly so. They take first off all and then abort. My after-care needs work. A few I've left out in the open with part shade and they'd been fine. Others, same environment and then kapoot 👎. I don't have a nursery or shelter but I'm thinking I might need to construct one?
@AJTheGraftMan
@AJTheGraftMan 3 жыл бұрын
Ya it’s strange. It’s happened for me too. Same variety, same type of graft, same water schedule and sun exposure, but some grafts just take off and others don’t. From what I’ve seen in big nursery operations, a greenhouse with high humidity and temperatures makes a big difference with graft success

@@AJTheGraftMan a couple of things I did pick up in my research was 1. Heat and watering and 2. Length of scion. In this case, the idea that when grafting to mature rootstock the scion should be longer as it contains more stored-energy. As we're in autumn in the southern hemisphere we're heading in to colder weather. I may invest in a few heat pads, possibly even grow lights. We do have a small shed that I've been storing some of my seedlings but my next project is some sort of shelter with insect net roof and walls. We will soldier on and make adjustments because that's what good learners do. Keep up the good work my friend👍🥑😉💖

@@AJTheGraftMan One other thing I have been mulling over a lot actually is timing by moon phase. Could some of our graft failures have something to do with non-optimal times? As you know the ocean tide is influenced by the moon's gravitational pull and water table in the soil etc. Apply that to gardening/grafting. Just me thinking aloud here, if we grafted at this optimal time, a time when it would influence sap flow, to flow into our grafts?? Deep I know but worth exploring. I will delve into this further and let you know. Cheers again😉
@AJTheGraftMan
@AJTheGraftMan 3 жыл бұрын
@@shanghaimuts I agree. Heat and watering are critical. Yes, longer scions have lots of stored energy, sometimes a little too much, to the point where the buds start to grow through the grafting tape on their own, well before the scion fuses with the rootstock. Thanks my brother
