I'm not a radar technician, but if LOG/LIN works even remotely in the same fashion as in panoramic radio receivers (EW/SIGINT stuff), you basically trade display resolution for sensitivity in logarithmic mode. In this case, those strong radar returns from the ships stay as-is and the weak shadows from the towers turn solid. I'd think of LIN mode mostly as a "declutter and terrain mapping mode" and LOG as "weak target detection and sea mode". Of course, this is just an oversimplification - keep flipping the switch and see what works best. Technical explanation: The radar scope is an analog instrument where signal strength is mapped to brightness. Signal strengths vary tremendously in radio communications (r² relation) and even more in radar systems (r⁴). By suppressing strong signals in a logarithmic fashion, display gain can be increased to make weak signals more visible.

You missed the Terrain avoidance mode. It's a specific mode that sets the radar antenna at 0 degrees Cake and displays a more navigation friendly radar picture where obstacles shows up in black. The button for it is on the left side of the top of the radar stick.

According to the Heatblur manual passive radar mode collects external radar emissions &displays them on the screen as a fuzzy line pointing at the source of the emission so in the radar field of view it gives a more refined bearing than the RWR.

Difference from passive to active radar is similar as for a CB radio or any device that have those option, it's a simplified explanation but it is close enough how passive or active radar work to. When you're not talking in the mic of a CB radio it's only listening and you can hear other talk but they wouldn't know you're there and the radio is hardly emitting any radio waves measurable unless you're very up close to antenna. When you talk in CB mic any one listening would now you 're there cause you are transmitting and the radio waves could easy be detected and measured from vast distances all dependent on how strong the listening antenna is on the one measure your signal or listening. If I recall correctly, the 'sea-mode' is only for the doppler-radar updating the INS. So you'll have less INS drift over sea when using sea-mode.

In making this tutorial you'd probably benefit greatly from using active pause. It's in the controls for all planes, and will basically freeze your aircraft's motion while letting the rest of the world, including its systems, work normally. Takes away the time limit on doing stuff, which is great if you are also explaining things. It can even be enabled on servers, afair.

Sorry to keep beating the horse but you have to raise the HUD to post takeoff position for best results. I understand these are purely instructional videos but this is an important step when using the Viggen.

I would say it's a great starter aircraft. It's easy to learn difficult to master, not so fun if you like dogfighting though

So far Viggen have been the easiest of the fighters in DCS, not counting the low fidelity modules. Remember this is replicating an actual Mach 2 fighter. You are not suppose to master it.

Ghost Viggen Agree with you, apart from the fighter bit. The Viggen was designed as an attack aircraft. The AJS version is terrible in a dogfight, has no internal cannon and (correct me if I’m wrong) has no radar-guided missiles.

@@Blablablabla1ify Both yes and no, it was developed as an attack plane with secondary role as a fighter.. It's awesome fun as a fighter although it was it's secondary role and only later it's primary with the evolution of the J37 fighter version. It doesn't have any radar guided missiles just like you say so in a modern online environment it's gonna have a though time as a fighter, at least for longer ranges but many people seem to fly radar off anyway and one can get quite far with not using radar missiles. Many people fly the russian fighters using only thermal missiles due to the radar missiles being quite poor compared to the AIM 120. @Matt Redman actually the Viggen is amongst the better start aircraft I think, it's very easy to get started (takes a short time and doesn't require a lot of buttons) it's also easy to get STARTED using weapons but they are hard to master compared to more modern planes. I think the best high fidelity module to get started in would be the F18, fairly easy to get started once it has been practiced for a while and more importantly the systems and displays are easy to use, it's easy to choose weapons and it's easy to learn to use them effectivly. /WIlbuz

Passive recce makes the radar a receiver only, meaning you will get "returns" from signal emitted in the same band as your radar. Not sure this is simulated in DCS, but AFAIK this is used for SIGINT and jamming targets.

Nice video. Regarding the radar elevation; there is both a control (keybind only I believe) and a symbol. However, the symbol is only displayed when in the A2A mode on the weapons dial. When in all other modes, the radar is automatically controlled in elevation. However, I think the pilot retains the ability to steer the radar in DCS even when in another mode, and with no symbology to tell, the radar beam can get off kilter a bit. It's been a while since I've messed with that however, so you may want to do your own testing. You'll know if the beam is being steered based off the ground picture changing.

Passive could mean that the radar is listening on incoming signals but not transmitting any signal on its own. Just like a RWR. But I don’t know if that’s the case here.

Yes, it basically turns your radar into an expensive RWR scope. Think of it as a home-on-jam mode.

The passive mode will also keep displaying your navigational cues on the radar scope as well, but without actually transmitting (which could alert enemy aircraft that you're there and snooping around).

Isn't passive recce mode that the radar don't transmit but still scan and shows other radar transmissions by direction that shows up. Say you're looking for a cruiser that's transmitting you'll get a better bearing on it using the radar rather than the RWR. Also you'll be able to make out multiple sources i think. Haven't looked into this mode much.

In some contexts, including military context, it generally does mean "sea" though. Other examples when this is the case is when someone "gav sig ut till sjöss", or a captain of a sea faring vessel who is often referred to as a "sjökapten". It can also refer to wind speeds at sea (or probably rather the "waviness" of the sea) , something like: "det går hård sjö idag". I'm obviously no expert, but something like that.

You're both right. The radar wave will theoretically go forever like a radio wave, but the atmosphere will usually be the stop line
