When I was a kid, I thought the Viggen was a cool looking plane. But after flying it in DCS I have come to appreciate it as a true engineering marvel. For the era, it was VERY advanced.

The radar image is there for the “real” Viggen pilots who didn’t have the DCS map to show their position.

Very nice flying...I have 6000 hours on real airplanes, but I messed up my first few approach attempts in similar conditions on the DCS Viggen. I find it quite hard. I also have problems to see the HUD symbology in clouds with my VR Goggles.

You can brighten the hud as well as dimming it.

As far as that big loop, I think the Viggen flight computer expects the pilot to do max performance turns in the initial approach phases and/or perform the turns on-speed for minimum turning circle. As a so-called tactical ILS system, minimizing ground track while you're slow-and-low is preferred, and turning at the speeds Cap was doing would've made for rather long turns onto target. BTW, as you get closer to the TILS vehicle, it'll actually update your INS as well. You can think of it as a super-early WAAS system: the onboard flight computer is using the TILS vehicle's beacon to update its INS position and provide more accurate horizontal and vertical positioning, but it's still quite reliant on internal navigation.

TILS is Tactical ILS but compared to civilian ils which guides you in the extension of the runway tils is 3 degress offset. The changing of direction is a DCS "bug" and did not happen in real life. Autothrottle (AFK) was basically only used in this mode irl.

TILS points Cap slightly to the side of the runway. Runway appears more centered than any other ILS Cap showed off before. Is the lesson here to never point Cap exactly onto target but always a little off to the side?

7:52 Your positive you set it to QFE not QNH? Because they are different, just wanna make sure

I was always taught military sets to airfield QFE, civilian sets to QNH and lands positive ASL. No idea why?

Nice and useful! The Viggen's user interface however is not very intuitive. There is a lot to be remembered/noted down. And I still don't understand how anyone can remember all this for more than 2-3 planes.

I have to remember it for 20 planes lol. That's why im not actually any good in any of them lol

Different philosophy - different needs. I want to be very good, thus I can only manage very few. A10-C and may be at some point also F/A18 - after it has been finished.

You don’t need to it this way. Usually the mission is already programmed for the computer and all the pilot needs to do is follow the waypoints. B = Navigation waypoint M = Target waypoint L = Runway waypoint

@@ghostviggen Yeah but just following waypoints won't get you safely down through clouds and fog. The entire points of the TILS (or any other ILS for that matter) is to not only bring you straight to your airfield but also line you up with the runway and get you settled on a landing approach when visibility alone won't allow you to do that safely.

@@cmibm6022 I definitely feel you there. I struggle with the fact that there are too many aircraft I really enjoy and want to be able to fly. At the same time I am spreading myself too thin since I have my fingers in almost every cookie jar. I considered specialising more, but I just can't choose. And then there's Cap riding me for ever more tutorials of ever more aircraft. :D
