Sid takes us through a great introduction of the famous AK-47 Assault Rifle. He talks through it's history, uses and functionality. Everyone seems to love to at least shoot it a few times. If you haven’t tried an AK47, come down to T1G and we’ll let you try one of our full-auto versions (ours are all full-auto). Sid, and the other Weapons & Tactics instructors down at T1G, teach a lot of classes involving the AK-47. He knows what he is talking about. If you have any questions about the AK-47, you can comment below or reach out to Sid directly at T1G.com

while in the army from 80s thru 90s I cross trained with African troops who shot AKs. My impression of shooting the ak47 is its very rough & crude compared to a lot of modern rifles. It felt raggedy when shooting, but if I was in a war zone this is the gun I want - it shoots dirty, wet, whatever you throw at it and still functions. If im in a regular city home protection environment ill take other modern rifles but if I was on a battlefield give me an AK.

The reason for right-hand controls for the AK is actually pretty simple. It was designed to be operated in any possible firing position, and I mean ANY, even im-proper, non-textbook position. So they kept all moving parts to the right side to make it possible to operate when the rifle's left side is pressed against your chest for example, when you are lying down on your back or left side, under enemy fire, in a trench, or in a puddle, you name it.

Just want to say this is one of the best fundamental reviews of the basic controls on a Kalashnikov I have seen. I guess most firearms sites think everyone already knows all this, but actually seeing or handling select-fire AK's isn't something most people do everyday. And seeing you demonstrate the safety/fire control switch on this one confirmed something I had learned in my childhood--- namely that the first position off of safe on one of these is the full-auto position. What I saw as a kid further stated that since the first position off safe is the one that a weapon is intended to be used on mostly, that Kalashnikov's were therefor intended to be used to spray bullets on full-auto. Now where did I read all this as a kid? On the back of an action figure package! And it wasn't even G.I. Joe, it was a cheaper knock off brand, but it had accurate info about the little enemy dudes weapon, so it couldn't have been all bad. Just something I had always remembered; but then, things like that are what can get someone interested in firearms for life, so I'm glad I had such interests way back then.

There was also another AK prototype before that - the AK-46 which development started in 1946. - The AK-47 prototype was adopted in late 1949 as *_7.62mm Avtomat Kalashnikova_* - or shortly - *_AK_*

Now, in all fairness.... If your using AR type weapons, your using add on's to increase their functionality. You could certainly give your ak's a fair shake, and modify the safety/fire selector with a trigger finger tab, and a red dot mount too.... why only give one weapon a 21st century advantage?... just sayin. ;)
@Atkrdu
@Atkrdu 7 жыл бұрын
Why make it a trigger finger tab? If you're going to change the safety/selector at all, it would be smoother to use an ambidextrous thumb safety.

Bro, the charging handle and the fire selector switch are on the right side meaning if I was left handed I would have a pain using it. I've run an ak before and the reload times for those who are proficient with an ak are still slower than those of an ar. The only advantages I give to those with ak's are reliability and a deadlier round.

1) It was developed in the LATE 40s, not early 40s. 2) It was adopted in 1949, not in 1947. 3) Parts interchangeability on AKs is not as good as on AR15 - fact. Other than that - great video and very nice Hungarian AK.

One more thing he was wrong on, the loose tolerances are bad for reliability. If you get mud/dirt/dust in an Ak, you have to clear the gun before it will reliably function again. Yes, they are very rugged and can survive just about anything, and hardly ever flat out break. And they tend to require less maintenance than an ar15. But they will jam up hard if any debris, whether snow, dust, or mud, gets near the bolt. Unlike an ar15 where they run flawlessly as the bolt is completely sealed.

@@mav.- bro you can jam a ham sandwich under the guide rod of an AK and it will cycle. As someone who as used the M4 extensively in training and during deployment, it is also not the flawless system you're making it out to be when it comes to reliability. There's plenty to be said about what a mil spec ar has over a mil spec AK, but reliability is not one of them.

Hey guys I think the bolt hold open feature may vary. On my ZPAPM70 it is a matter of magazine or mag follower. The steel one that it came with does hold the bolt open but it does drop when you remove the empty mag. Not true for the magpul ones - these dont hold it open at all. Not sure how far back it stops - I will check next time I take it out - but it might line up with the catch on the safety which would allow you to lock it back while switching magazines and drop it when letting the safety down. I doubt it though, the safety doesnt hold the bolt very securely - I'm sure it wouldnt be much work to modify this though.

The ability to just swap out parts is one of the AK's "pros"? I'm thinking there are thousands of armorers who would disagree when it comes to the notion of randomly swapping out AK bolt carrier groups. This info isn't just wrong, it's potentially dangerous. I'm an AK guy, but AR's have it all over AK's when it comes to modularity and BCG interchangeability.

No bolt hold open?... load tracers as your first two rounds (last to be fired before the mag is dry). The first time you see smoke or red/green you know the last round is now in the chamber. Right side selector?... Oh so many good after-market selector options that make this a non-issue. Heavy? Yeah, gotta give you that one. Walking patrol I’ll gravitate towards an M4 and leave the AK. The gun is heavy, the mags are heavy and the ammo is heavy. Still, if I could only have one gun, it’d be an AK-47...

The "lack" of a bolt hold open can actually be seen as a feature. It's a gun for war, not for looking fancy on the range. The hold open device on M4s is a window of opportunity for dust to get into the chamber, and actually that's one of the most common causes of malfunctions in the field (other than crappy old abused mags). If an AK held open, it would have the very same problem. Dust in the chamber is pretty much the only dust that will stop an AK, an M4, or any other gun for that matter. Speed reloads look cool, but if you run out of bullets in the field, you're either: a) purposely shooting to the last round, as you know you have enough cover b) you did some stupid decision, after some stupid decision, after some stupid decision. Like getting out of cover without making a proactive reload and finding yourself in the middle of an open field, shooting in an attempt to get your enemy's head down instead of relying on your mates. Really, a hold open device shaves miliseconds off a speed reload, but the chances of actually needing such reload are minuscule compared to the risk of getting dust in your chamber in scenarios like a windy, sandy environmet. Russians had experimental AKs with hold open devices back in the '70s, and they didn't field it precisely for that reason. Some Saigas and VEPRs specifically designed for range and competition sport such devices, but I'm pretty sure you will not see them in issued rifles ever, Even the newest AK-12 got scrapped for that issue, and is now replaced by a more conservative approach that's pretty much an AK-74 with pic rails, free floated barrel, short stroke gas system and some improved ergonomics, but again, intentionally lacks a hold open device.

Spoken like someone who has never seen combat. The last round hold open on the AR platform is absolutely a very usable future. Once you become very acquainted with the rifle, you can definitely feel the difference between a normal cycle, and running empty. At least this was my experience on the streets of Fallujah. Good training means you won't entirely rely on that future, but it is definitely a very useful indicator. In addition, when doing any kind of malfunction clearing, the ability to lock the bolt back is absolutely a godsend. On the AK you either have to take the top cover off or grow a third hand to hold that bolt to the rear. It wasn't omitted on purpose, it was omitted because the AK is a generation earlier than the AR, and was designed to be dead not simple and used by conscript peasant Farmers. They probably would have broken the hold open

My guess is that the AK used in this video is Hungarian looking at the pistol grip and stock... Modern day commercial 7.62x39 ammo is not corrosive and can be purchased anywhere, you'd have a harder time finding corrosive ammo... On an A/R you don't know the bolt is locked back unless you're looking at the bolt, the trigger won't pull when the bolt locks back, but unlike the AK it does lock back. Also, on an AK if you don't completely empty the mag you can drop the mag and insert a new one without having to charge/rack the slide and continue to fire, I'm surprised you didn't bring that up being an instructor... If you practice enough with an AK you can certainly operate the safety in an efficient manner, the AK is actually more natural for lefties to operate the safety selector...

Other then the fact that quite a few things on this are AK-47 like, there are some things that make this not a true AK-47. On the original AK-47's the Automatic setting was the lower position, this was changed with the AKM to stop soldiers from using all their ammo when they tried to set it to semi quickly. Also on the true milled receivers, there were no braces (it is nice that this one does not have any) those were added on with the stamped receiver to improve the structural support.

@facundocorradini
@facundocorradini 7 жыл бұрын
The prototype (AK-1 or AK-46) had a totally different selector. It was a thumb safety on the left side. It also had a non-reciprocating charging handle on the left side, a 2 part receiver, short stroke gas piston. and tighter fitting FCF. Ironically enough, I'm sure most western shooters would have found them far better than the issued gun. The Soviet military prioritised simplicity and reliability above everything else, and that's why they changed so many aspects of the original design. But anyway, ever since the AKs got their typical right side selector lever, it's been in the normal safe-full-semi order.

I love the Zastava 5.56 AKs because lots of people in the US run M4/AR-15 platform. Ammo and mags are readily available, still get AK reliability. You adjust the gas properly on a the M90 and it has no recoil. I've seen new shooters love mine with the windowed PMAGs but I personally prefer the mec gar mags. I'm not a fan of the factory stock but FAB Defense makes some of the best AK stocks available (also their KPOS G2 pistol to carbine conversion kit is fantastic). Still, the AK comes with everything you need. I'm not one of those "Nyet! Rifle is fine!" people but I am working class so it's nice to have a gun that comes with everything you need. I am not opposed to an AR-15 but to me, that's not a gun. It's a project. I'd get a parts kit and build it out vs the AK which I'd buy the a factory gun. The AK and M4 platforms mostly come down to personal preference, and there's nothing wrong with that. Always go with what you're comfortable with.

Yeah, I like AKs and pump shotguns. The ballistics behind them are devastating yes, but more than that they're simple. That's invaluable in a high stress scenario. I see people with stupidly tricked out AR-15s and I have to wonder: If someone kicks in your door will you really be able to check everything on that? (Might not be the case for military, but a soldier is fundamentally different from a criminal.) For me, not optic, no swiss army knife gun, just basic folding stock and those tritium Blitzkrieg Chevron sights. Only thing is I need to practice my reloads on shotguns, goal right now is to be able to top the gun off in less than 3 seconds.

Why did they have the safety switch go from Safe - Full - Semi ?
@TacticalRifleman
@TacticalRifleman 7 жыл бұрын
Excellent question... I'll let some of our FSU viewers chime in with the actual "historic" data, but I'll give you a really great reason that I found when using some of the AK versions with collapsible stocks. If you look at some of the early versions, with the wire stocks that fold up under the gun, they actually block the user from being able to easily reach the Semi position. It easily goes from Safe to Full-Auto and back to Safe. With the stock folded, you are no going to hit shit on Semi. So, with only Full-Auto available, you have a better chance of hitting (stock folded) using the "praying and spraying method (preferred by everyone in Hollywood). Second reason, with a fixed stock, if you quickly sweep the selector lever down, it goes past Full-Auto and stops on Semi. This helps ensure soldiers don't panic nd just spray away all their basic load of ammo. So there are two reasons that I like their design. Are either of them the actual reasons they chose to go that route? Well, food for thought. Thanks for watching. Strength & Honor, TR.
@johnn1250
@johnn1250 7 жыл бұрын
Tactical Rifleman What you said makes perfect sense. Seems like a small design change to accommodate those foldable stocks for maximum compactness. They probably though you can still fire single shots in full-auto mode if you wanted too, but not vice versa. Thanks for the response to my question.

John Nowak because the ak was designed to be semi auto 95% of the time.You have to be conscience to stop at full auto.
@jellyfrosh9102

It's because if you were holding your rifle say on guard duty and get shot at, you'll panic and slam the safety down, which goes to semi instead of full. This means you have to deliberately pick full auto over semi, so you can control your fire better.

I got several guns already, but I was debating on getting a AK 47 or SKS. The 7.62 x 39 is a decent mid size round and its pretty "common" too, which is good in a SHFT type situation. 0:19 The AK47 wasn't designed in the "early 1940s". It began development around 1945\46 (hard to tell, even though the first prototypes by Kalashnikov were presented in '46 and came to be known as AK46). The rifle was only adopted by the Red Army in 1949: 1947 was the year of end of main development (they kept fine-tuning it at least until the early 1950s). 0:50 "There's a lot of metal, there's a lot of wood, unlike our M4 platform". Yeah, because polymers were incredibly common in firearms in the late-40s! Somebody here forgot that the "M4 platform" didn't really exist until the mid-80s (that's when the XM4 prototype was first introduced) and even its grand-daddy, the original AR15, only came to be in the late 1950s (a good 10 years after the AK) and didn't enter service until 1964. By that time, Kalashnikov's rifle was almost 20 years old. If the AK47 has to be compared to some American rifles, those should be either the M1 or the M14: two guns that were made with a lot of metal and a lot of wood (much more wood than the AK, in fact).
