In this video Rob shows us what happens when shooting through different types of vehicle glass. He starts with the side Safety Glass and the laminated Windshield. He then wraps up the video with a thick piece of “Bulletproof” Glass.
Now, it’s called “Bulletproof” glass, but most brands are really just multiple layers standard safety glass that are laminated together. In this case, Rob was shooting at a window composed of 8 separate layers of safety glass laminated into a very heavy windscreen that could easily stop bullets from a 7.62mm machinegun. It was taken out of an actual Up-Armored Truck (brand intentionally not mentioned, so don’t ask). These windows save lives every day overseas.
That said, is it really bulletproof? Short answer, no. Long answer, sort of. Bulletproof glass is designed to stop fragmentation and multiple hits of small arms fire, to allow the driver to maneuver the vehicle off the “X” and escape to a safer location. Most will not stop .50 cal rounds. Also, there are many different types of projectiles built for snipers that are specifically designed for barrier penetration. Some work better than others.
So, how was Rob able to penetrate the “Bulletproof” glass with 5.56mm ammo through a AR rifle?
Penetrating any medium is about energy and shot placement. Rob’s 5.56mm ammo (even using Green-Tip) did not have enough energy to penetrate all 8 layers of the glass. That said, he did get through several layers of the laminate. So, by focusing his shots in one location, he was able to slowly destroy layer after layer of the laminated glass. He finally penetrated on his 4th shot.
On a vehicle driving 60 miles per hour through the ambush site, it would be very hard for a shooter to focus his shots in so tight of a shot group. Hence, the armor has served its purpose and the driver lives to drive another day.
How do we apply this? If your unit is required to conduct a “Vehicle Interdiction” against a foe in an up-armored vehicle, understand that you will need to stop the vehicle first. This can be done in a dozen different ways (and will be covered another time). Pin the vehicle in, so the driver can’t just back out of your kill box. Then, walk up and center your point of aim low-center on the driver. Why low-center? That way, no matter which way he leans or squirms, he cannot get out of your point of aim. Hammer the same spot on the window with multiple rapid shots. You can even place your muzzle right up against the glass (Eye Pro & Gloves of course). Once you are through, keep shooting, work that muzzle around and mix metal & meat together.

So this bulletproof glass appears not to be using any lexan in the laminate? Am I seeing that right?
@TacticalRifleman
@TacticalRifleman 7 жыл бұрын
use of Lexan type materials varies by manufacturer. Some armor companies use it, while other do not. I'm not sure exactly where we sourced this window. Lexan is a great material to add to windows of local indig vehicles, while also adding ballistic plates inside doors and back of seats. It helps to add protection while maintaining a low-vis posture.
@8digitPDX
@8digitPDX 7 жыл бұрын
Tactical Rifleman yeah, when they are too cheap to buy regular hard cars like the Mitsubishi raider trucks that never showed up...Anyway, lexan is readily available at TAP plastics and I am looking at doing another few videos on the Apocalypse trooper and am looking at ballistic windshield options what would not add crazy amounts of weight. Some of the older Japanese 4x4s and of course classic jeeps and land rovers used flat windshields so curving the glass is not an issue. I just don't have the means of testing the design.

sure bullet resistant glass would be hard to hit the same spot 4 times in a row on a moving car but, shoot a clip at the windshield and the driver would be forced to stop because he wouldnt be able to see anything. now that i think of it a paint ball gun would also be good.

You can hear someone faintly whispering on the video, @ 4:49 it sounds like someone whispers "stop it" & @ 5:08 it sounds like a whisper saying "I know". I'm sure this sounds crazy but take a listen for yourself, the mic would have been in the car while recording that shot(scene), but no one should have been in the car when shots were fired & who would be whispering on a range & a long gun 5.56 is being fired in close proximity......so IJDK???? Be sure to turn up the audio & wearing headphones help. Tell me your thoughts. Lastly, after looking thru many comments to see if anyone else mentioned this whispering, I saw a ton of negative comments about this video.....I'm no one super special in relation to guns or tactics but I liked this video & I enjoyed watching it. If you read the description, they point out that this wouldn't work with a moving car, which is why bulletproof glass is effective, because most vehicles under fire are moving too quickly to group shots like this. They say that a technique like this would only be possible after stopping the vehicle, by using one of several different vehicle-arresting maneuvers.

@@prandomable I'm not sure what you're trying to say... I mean, what you said is correct, but it sounds like you're also trying to contradict something I said. I could be misunderstanding you, but I think you're saying that just because an armored car is stopped, it doesn't mean the occupants can automatically be shot through the glass. And that totally makes sense, and I agree with it. I didn't say this technique was necessarily going to work if the vehicle could be stopped, I just said it probably would not work while the vehicle was moving.

Previously, I made an error and stated the inverse of what Tactical Rifleman was saying about bullet impact through a windshield. I was in error and Tactical Riflemen is absolutely correct. If you are outside of a vehicle and aim at a target through a windshield, the bullet impact is, in fact, lower than your point of aim. Imagine if you will which part of the bullet hits the windshield first. The bottom of the tip. That causes the back to pitch up as the bullet passes through the glass, also the top of the bullet is the last part to be in contact the glass as it exits (energy takes the path of least resistance), resulting in the projectile being angled downward upon its exit from the windshield, the result is in an impact on target which is lower than your point of aim. Tactical Riflemen films some top notch videos and I hope the accept my apologies for spreading erroneous info on their channel. Keep up the good work.

Firing through water is interesting, as it seems that low-velocity rounds penetrate further than high-velocity. This is because the shock/viscosity characteristics of water means that a hv round disintegrates to shreds on impact with the surface layer, whereas a lv round stays together. There's also the issue of light refraction, which affects your aiming. If you search KZfaq for "mythbusters shooting water", there's a comparison going from musket through 50cal. But I guess that even if the metal of the round didn't reach you, the shock would damage your lungs anyways if you were underwater?

hi! p sure ballistic rated glass has layers of clear polycarbonate *jelly* (proprietary stuff, different depending on what company?) between the layers of glass. so it's not only thicker, *more*, glass, but with a material that will also distribute the kinetic force horizontally as well as vertically. this will bring *projectile* (usually bullet) to a stop faster.

It does seem ridiculous but glass is actually way harder to surgically remove. Glass munitions are widely considered a war crime, they don't show up well on x rays. So I mean, even if you're not being shot w glass bullets, getting filled w lead might be easier for trauma surgery to fix than having to dig a ton of glass shards out of your body.

Do you have an equivalent to the NUHKKa drill? In Sweden we introduced a drill to break tunnel vision, re-establish communication and so on. Since you often hold your breath during a shot, you're drilled to yell the chant after each shooting. This also alerts the rest of the group that there was a threat in your vector, you assess your vector to be secure for the moment, and that you are at least capable of functioning at the moment (you ain't dead). The acronym stands for: Nedkämpad; Down - The target appeared to go down. Utslagen; Disabled - The target didn't just fall over or get injured, the target is disabled. Hot; Additional threats - Were there more than one target? Look over your weapon from side to side, keeping the weapon pointed in the same direction that you're looking. Kontroll vapen; Check weapon - Do you need to change magazine, is the breech closed, is the belt on your belt fed weapon twisted, any damage, do you need additional ammunition? Kontroll flanker; Check flanks, check friendly forces closest to you to establish contact, check for injured and prevent gaps in the line or hostile flanking manoeuvres.

The armoured glass statement wasn't strictly true. You harden glass by making sodium glass, and then after it's formed you replace the sodium atoms with potassium atoms to a certain depth into the glass pane. That glass is then laminated, and usually the last pane is acrylic instead of glass.

Now I cant seem to get a straight answer on this there is the glass that Nasa space shuttles use Aluminosilicate glass which is also layered like balistic glass I know next to nothing about military arms. Would this be more effective against the rounds you used?

draconus15 how so? He did show how to do it. You could empty a mag of 5.56 on that glass and never go through it. But it only takes 4 rounds using what he showed you. I'd say he did what he said he would

Yeah, I thought it was kind of misleading too. I was expecting to learn some method, not just the obvious thing I would try anyway. Also, I was also expecting polycarbonate which is bullet proof, not just seven layered laminate which is only stops the first few bullets. It's hard to call it a technique when it's the obvious thing to try.

different. i was always knew to shoot at the windshield just above the hood line. the bottom edge is the thinnest part of the windshield. got this from Swat cops back in the late 80's. but the glass may have changed since them

Hey just some clarity the front windshield is safety glass, and the sides are tempered meaning cooled super quickly giving them a prince Rupert effect and shattering the glass.

The ballistic glass is about 4 to 5 layers of 1/4'' laminated glass. They have different kinds of ballistic glass on about 8 levels. They have a polycarbonate, acrylic and clad with the old school lami....the lami is out dated really nut it's still available.

THREE THINGS: #1 this seems to work perfectly if the car is just a sitting duck. #2 this seems to work perfectly if your standing 5 feet from the whindshield/window #3 this seems to work perfectly IF whoever is inside the car has no weapons.

First, this is a technique taught to DA & HRT forces and is only for your entertainment. Step-1 is to pin the target car with other vehicles, but we aren’t going to get into tactics on the open internet. Second, I was taught to actually run up and stand on hood of vehicle; so yes, we are within a few meters of the bullet proof glass. Third, it doesn’t matter if the guys inside the vehicle have guns or not, the mission must still be accomplished. Standing on the hood, a well trained assaulted can easily eat through the bullet proof glass before anyone inside can shoot a hole back through. Thanks for watching, TR

'literally' means the words can be taken at face value instead of figuratively. "It's literally raining cats and dogs" means cats and dogs are actually falling from the sky. "I'm literally going to die from hunger" means if you don't get food soon your life will actually end. "He literally scared the shit out of her" means she now has shit in her pants.

Although shooting through the side or front windows of a vehicle may be a less common occurrence, I can't think of a single situation in which you'd even be ABLE to fatally shoot the driver through a sunroof, much less why you'd do that instead of shooting through the side or front windows. Also, why would an armored vehicle with bulletproof glass have a sunroof? And even if they did "test" shooting through the sunroof, what would they be testing, exactly? If the glass would break? No, I don't think Tactical Rifleman is much of a have-fun, shoot-em-up, break stuff channel. That's more of a Demolition Ranch sort of thing.

He's probably just still developing his presentation style to a camera. A better - or just different - microphone might add tone to his voice as well - some microphones place pitches that aren't comfortable to listen to. I know of one regular youtuber who 'upgraded' his microphone, but it made his voice sound worse.

How many layers of Windshield would you have to have to protect you from a hand gun single round fire?? Would 2 windshields be enough if you added a layer of polycarbonate between the 2 windshields??? Or would you have to have 3?? If 7 layers of windshield glass stopped 3 rounds from a rifle then my guess is 3 layers will stop hand guns.

Works great if the vehicle is gonna sit still for you 👍 , there's nothing special with the door glass , it's tempered . As for the windshield , after you shot it multiple times and showed the pic @ 2:36 everyone can see the multiple holes ( as expected ) but when you go back to it and show it @ 2:40 , there's only 1 big hole , because between the pic shots , you used your hand or something to make it 1 big hole 👍 & that thick glass isn't bullet proof , it's just bullet resistant ( up to a certain point) 👍
