To help clarify a few things, in this video we talk about the differences between the original AK-74/AKS-74 and the modernized AK-74M. We compare and contrast a Bulgarian Arsenal SLR105A1 and Russian Izhmash SGL31-94, both chambered for the 5.45x39mm M74 cartridge.

It's too bad 5.45 never took off in the US, I love the AK74. My first experience was with my dad's. I think it was a Bulgarian parts kit build, it had a Nodak receiver but all the parts including trunnion were scrubbed of markings, stocks were Combloc style plastic and had the side optic rail.

Bought a new 09 legion SGL31-94 for $1177 with tax back in 2010. Love the rifle. Ejects at 2ock, lightweight, engineeringly and field simple, accurate in both range and to AK-74m details except for full-auto, built like a real one in metallurgy, comfortable, easy furniture modifiable, and so on... grateful I own one. I hope they come back normally for sale again.

Personally, the AK-74M is my favorite AK of all time. Having said that, I've owned both at one time - an Izhmash SGL 31-94 and a Bulgarian SLR 104FR. Sold the Izhmash 31-94 and still have the Bulgarian 104FR. The Bulgarian gun easily had the better fit and finish, not to mention the pistol grip retaining plate, a key part the 31-94 Izzy was missing. I really wanted to love the Izzy 31-94, but the Bulgarian 74, even though it's not exactly down to every detail, a 74M, is a better built rifle.

Love my SGL21. Wish it was the side folder though. Anyways, I have the polymer stocks on it but I just ordered the factory Izhmash wood stock set from SovietStocks.com. It's the original 1960's factory Russian color. It's listed to fit Saiga rifles. And these sets have not been drilled yet for mounting screws either. Can't wait to get the new furniture put on it but the stocks are refinished by hand on order so there's a 4-6 week wait before shipping. They also come with all of the hardware like the buttplate, trapdoor, and sling swivel.

One more question: Do you have any AK-74M receiver stubs? Me and some other guys are gathering measurements and we're trying to figure out when Izhmash/Kalashnikov Concern switched from a 1.00mm thick receiver to a 1.25mm receiver. Another possible thing to measure would be 90's Saiga receivers. 2000's and onwards Saigas use the 1.25mm receiver.

Can you ( or some viewer) help with this question?---> I have a 5.45 Saiga converted to near-AK74 "look" by virtue of furniture change and Fire-Group changeout, etc. I don't know if this Saiga follows the AK-74 or AKM more closely. Reason for asking?..... it seems Poland's Radom offers a 5.56 NATO AK...and therefore produces a barrel and mag for 5.56. Question--> can a Radom 5.56 barrel and mag be fitted to a Saiga 5.45 to create a caliber change?...or are there many more parts involved, or not possible for other reasons?

Great video. Thanks for the great content. I have a question, maybe someone here can shed some light: I have read that the Arsenal SLR-106 series is not even an AK-74 style rifle, because it actually has an AKM bolt carrier. Some people on the internet have called it a "freak morph" but I am not sure since I don't have a 74 style to compare it with. Does anyone know? Thanks!
@misha5670
@misha5670 5 жыл бұрын
That's tricky....thing is nearly all 5.56/223 AKs are different from each other; there wasn't a unified pattern. The SLR106 is basically a milled Arsenal ARM1 in 5.56 but built on a stamped receiver rather than milled. So yes, it does have some elements from the AK47/AKM. It isn't a true AK101 or AK102 that's for sure. Still good guns though, no worries.
@bigdave7648
@bigdave7648 5 жыл бұрын
I have been looking around for some time now but maybe you have an answer Misha; Do you know why the XY stampings on the AK changed slightly in 1973/1974? It's both visible on all AK models after 1973 for Izhmash, Tula, Sadu Mechanical Plant, Bulgaria, and Factory K3 from EG.
@misha5670
@misha5670 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry no, i don't have a reason why. Sometimes changes just happened 'because.' Usually it had to do with either new tooling, new material being used, or a new technique designed to speed up production or save on resources.
@bigdave7648
@bigdave7648 5 жыл бұрын
That's possible. I had a theory that it was modified to fit the new side rail design, which came about from the new AK74 trunnion, even though not many guns had the side rail. They did something similar with the rear trunnion where it didn't matter if it was a folding stock model or not; the rear rivet was machined flat.

Here's a question, how do you guys cut the take up to be so short on those TGs? Both of those 74s seem to have a really short take up and the trigger hook does not seem to be tilted with a floor spacer.

Nothing special. The SLR105 has the orig Arsenal FCG installed back in 2005 and i swapped the orig FCG that came in the SGL31 with one of the newer FIME Group FCGs (which itself is a US mfg copy of the Molot semi one).
@BigSmartArmed
@BigSmartArmed 5 жыл бұрын
@@misha5670 Thanks for the heads up on FIME, I'm looking into it. Not sure what you meant by copy of Molot though, since their hammers come with a stand off shelf. I worked on mine and geometry seems to be different from standard AK, including sear function. I swapped the TG in one of my Veprs and without the shelf on the hammer the operation turns into single stage vs. two stage. I coudn't find exact definition of FCG vs TGA, and though that FCG defines select fire and TG(a) single fire, be it semi-auto or manually operated. Live and learn.

Yes S = folding stock and N = for a rail mount. So originally you had names like AKMN and AKS74. With the AK74M though, both the folding stock and scope rail became standard features rather than variant upgrades.
