The word POSH, stands for "port out, starboard home. Back in colonial days when you had to travel to India by ship, the port side was away from the sun when going to India as was the starboard side going from India to England. POSH meant your cabin was considerably cooler (no AC back then). These cabins were sold at a premium, so it was only the rich that could afford them.

The middle-class mum is not even the uber rich in the UK. My mum went to school with Catherine and it was highly selective on ability. The plus side was that girls from a working class families (such as Catherine's whose mother was single and on her own, and my mother's whose world crumbled when her father was left disabled and unable to work) were able to receive the education that their ability deserved but their parents could not afford. That did mean that they were mixing with girls whose mothers were very much like this. Women who had been privately educated to find rich husbands and have nannies and au pairs looking after their children, pets and homes to the point that they themselves were thoroughly clueless and useless.

POSH refers to upper class people in the UK. It's actually an acronym from the days of the British Raj in India. On the steam ships from the UK to India and back, the more privileged passemgers were given cabins on the side of the ship that was out of the sun. So they'd be berthed on the North side of the ship on both journeys. To this end, their luggage was stamped with the acromym: P.O.S.H standing for "Port Outward, Starboard Home."

POSH, means a moneyed snob, yes. Comes from: "Port Out - Starboard Home. When booking a cabin on a cruise those were the desirable cabins and only wealthy people could afford them. Posh is an acronym for Port out, Starboard home. Back in the days of Empire when everyone travelled by ship the most desirable (and therefore most expensive) cabins were those with the more shaded and interesting view of the coast rather than just the ocean. Port is the left hand side and starboard the right. It has come to describe people who have money, if not always good taste. Here endeth the lesson.🥂😄

Your lesson is wrong though, although it is what a lot of people believe. 😜It is more likely derived from Romani posh (“half”), either because posh-kooroona (“half a crown”) (originally a substantial sum of money) was used metaphorically for anything pricey or upper-class, or because posh-houri (“half-penny”) became a general term for money.

My man on the right has it correct, it's not about race it's about class. In Britain we don't really see race like you do in the US.

This isn’t far off of how some people think tbh! When I was a school a girl lost a button off her blazer her parents bought her a whole new £100 blazer because their housekeeper was on holiday and I’m quoting here “how are we to have the means to sew on a button” it’s a BUTTON you poke the needle through the holes it’s not theoretical physics .... it’s right fucking there!!! You can get an emergency sewing kit from Tesco’s for £1.99!

Posh stands for Port Out, Starboard Home. A posh ticket to travel to America from the UK would allow you to be on the Port side of the ship on the way to America, and the Starboard side on the way home, maximising direct sun into your cabin on the ship.

It’s upper middle class snobbery, it’s all about the money you earn.

They already have the money, largely by birth, but the snobbery vocomes out in finding the most expensive ways to do everything and the most expensive places to live and visit so they can avoid ordinary people and imagine they're normal, except better.

@@patrickholt2270 Some people in my family ( working class), married into very very wealthy families, they had nannies, skiing holidays ( winter holidays) public schools for their kids and totally live the upper middle class life, then a few have become upper middle class through their jobs, their kids have a totally different life to the working class life their parents had, and live in the most expensive parts of the country. A few have totally tried to pretend they didn’t grow up where they did, it’s laughable because we all know!
