This is taken from an article on Forbes called “Why Being A Jack Of All Trades Is Essential For Success” “Jack of all trades has become somewhat of an insult, but it didn’t start as one. The phrase was originally used to describe a playwright who was always hanging around theatres. He would help with the stage, the set and the costumes. He would remember lines and try directing. This so called jack of all trades was in fact William Shakespeare. The full phrase is “a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” It was a compliment “ So in this day and age, for better or for worse, we have the tools to go from idea, to creation and to release, and it may not be totally a bad thing, but along that journey we can learn where are strengths and weaknesses are and then outsource where necessary

Prince was a multi talented musician/composer/songwriter/producer/recording artist. Even he didnt try to do everything himself.

Recently broke tradition and paid a professional mastering engineer with some high end gear. The results were incredible. At a certain point handing certain tasks off helps you with creativity by offloading alot of decisions - thus less decision fatigue. You can get more done if you don't do it all. And you'll get it done better. Look how many ppl were involved in classic records that stand the test of time. Check the ego, get yourself a TEAM.

Todays (wanna be) producers, most of them anyway, rely entirely on stuff thats already made ie construction kits. Back in the day I had, and still do, my Boss DR 660, MS-1 sampler, Juno keyboard Alesis MMT 8 seqencer and an ART DR 2100 effects processor, I done everything from scratch. Making music was fun because of the limitations. And limitations really challenge your true creativity in this craft.

I've always done it all myself to prevent getting ripped off. In the beginning i didn't know anything about anything in 1986 so I went to a local recording studio and the in house engineer and owner programmed the drums and i played the keys. It sounded great in there but on a boom box or house stereo it was wack!! So i built my own studio and taught myself everything.

well yep, I learn it all, do it all myself. being realistic about it, i have leanred so much with proper critically thought out DIY. and i have a lot to learn. but that is the way. You can do it all. and just because there might be a better engineer, so what. too many engineers , too many middle men. they tell me everyday you cant do this ,you cant do that, and i prove em wrong every day. yesterday they said you cant simulate a real drummer and all their nuance on an mpc. but i just did.... i got the engineer hat, the artist hat, i wear every MF one of them and seeking other hats to start wearing too. Do or Do not, there is not try when its DIY. Anything else keeps a great man down. and great machines unable to reach their potential.

The caveat to this is outsourcing is expensive and the outsourcing that is affordable sucks. Most of the people that I have came across just don't take the work serious and have a problem when I want corrections (if I put all the time into perfecting the production, everything is else needs to be on par or better). I think at that point, I just do it myself because I rather be trash at the beginning and KNOW what I need to be improve on and that I'm going to get better versus only being able to get trash help just because of my income.

That’s the nice part about being part of a band. Everyone does their part and we can make it all happen as a team. I’ll play bass and maybe rap or sing, then the homie can play the guitar and synth, and the other homie can hit the drums, and we do it all live. When it’s time to record, we hire our buddy the engineer. And the shows pop off because there is that energy. Of course we gotta write our own parts or just freestyle it.

I do it all myself but it’s not by choice I really wish I had got into beat making and music production a lot sooner in my life like right out of High School and went to College for it or even knew some other seasoned beat makers and producers to learn from the KZfaq tutorials where cool and helpful though.

I do make, produce, mix, master all my music. I create synth patches. I polish the drum samples. I make the album art. I film and montage the music videos. Yes, i am not the master of anything, but i still do everything by myself, cause it's fun. And then, when it comes to promotion, i just like "hell no, i won't do it, it's too boring". So i just upload it all on yt and hope for the best. It seems, that the best is yet to come (or not) :D

96% try to do everything because they’re broke, but also because music attracts narcissists and narcissists are too afraid to let anyone hear what they’ve done. Music is seen as something that can bring fame while being easy/convenient compared to other fine arts, yet narcs don’t have the empathy and therefore the urgency to actually share their art with anyone. The narcissist procrastinates until they're “ready,” or until success and validation magically finds them so that they don’t risk rejection.

Akai hit a HOME RUN not with the X. But with the ONE and Live 2. Those were HOME RUNS... Then they immediatley lied to everyone with their marketing by saying every update to the machines would be free and then tried charging dudes 300$ for plug ins. Ive never seen a company fumble the bag so hard. They took the industry then list it in 6 months.
