It wasn't the same game. Slavery was a universal instution. Only Europeans practiced 'Chattle Slavery' removing the enslaved person from the human family. Other forms of slavery had rules to protect the inslaved person.

In America at least, slavery was racialized after the powers that be-rich white slave owners- realized that splitting the lower class into Blacks vs whites would help them keep a grip on all of them. By allowing poor whites to feel superior to black slaves, but still keeping them impoverished with terrible working conditions and wages, they guaranteed a successful lower class (pr slave) was impossible at the time.

But the overwhelming number of slaves captured were free men, who didn't fight in battles. Muslim kings and slaverers still supported it. The British had to defeat them and force them to stop slavery.

In America slavery was racialized when the slave owning class realized they wouldn't be able to keep control without finding a way to pit the poor against each other. Queue centuries of people jumping through hoops to justify keeping Blacks enslaved. I'm not saying it's better by any means, but had slavery not been 'racialized' a revolt could have ended it sooner and modern day racism may not have grown to what it is today.
