I was 14 years old attending this concert. Bumped into Ustad saab somewhere around the backstage (don’t remember exactly where) and I said “Salam alaykum Uncle ji” and he put his hand on my head and said “wa alaykum Salam baita jeetey roh “ -best moment OF MY LIFE bar none!!

Lol no I was just a kid running around the venue with a bunch of other kids.... didn’t realise what a momentous occasion it was to see him in concert. It was pure luck that as he was making his way towards the stage I was using the same passage as him and he stopped to let me go first and so I said salam etc etc

I was introduced to qawwali in San Francisco. I forget who performed, it was not Nusrat. I had no knowledge of qawwali, never heard this kind of performance. The show started and within moments I knew this would be very entertaining. A few days after asking around my friends I began to find more qawwali recordings then listened to a Nusrat recording. Wow....I will always be a fan of qawwali and of course Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan!

This is in the Punjabi language. Some of his songs praise The Almighty, some or of love, some of heartbreak.. All of his songs are amazing!!!! If you can find an old Punjabi man, then maybe he can translate it for you properly coz my Punjabi sucks... Lol.

@@s7unn3rr Thank you. I've educated myself on qawwali music at least the point of understanding some of its history. Forty years ago I tried to learn a bit of Urdu but nothing remains. I have been a fan of Indian classical music since my early teens. Had the great privilege of attending a Ravi Shankar concert in Bangkok in 1966. I was 13 years old and it was the first concert I ever attended. A life-changing experience. I recently discovered that Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a visiting artist at the University of Washington school of Ethnomusicology in 1993. If only I had known, my wife is a professor at the UW and I might have been able to meet him! Thank you for your thoughts.

He is also another legend, I must say. I believe one thing - music of the olden days cannot be compared to anything of late in whatever genre or language and it's sad to see such talent not there anymore. A big Jambo to you from Kenya. 😊

The most amazing thing to notice here; A person is right behind Ustaad NFAK who is just there to remind him the verces. Most of the times during this performance NFAK had no clue what to sing next and yet he managed ro prolong the Alaaps by making them at the spot. Today in the era of technology, it's even tough to sing in the studios with countless takes and softwares and look at this legendary personality. Take a bow. This is THE NFAK for us 🌼❤
