This movie doesnt even seem possible. Every shot literally perfect and executed entirely with practical effects. Modern films dont ever reach this level of compositional brilliance with their set pieces despite being incalcuably easier to make (essentially infinite reshooting potential and far safer)

No CGI special effects in this masterpiece of a film. There really are hundreds of armored soldiers and a real wooden castle burnt for the sake of this iconic shot.

Ran is one of the best movies I've ever seen in my whole life. Think of the scenes with the horses. Can you even imagine the effort needed to get all of those horses together in modern Japan?

I can imagine having an actual castle burning down in the background really motivates you to get the shot right the first time. There's only so much castle for you to shoot in front of.

In Saipan, there's a place called Suicide Cliff, where hundres/thousands of Japanese women and other non-combatants committed suicide, because it was so shameful to be captured by the enemy soldiers in their culture. It happened in 1944.

For me, the best scene was the beheading of the Lady Kaede, who goaded two out of the 3 sons to plot against their father. Only one remained loyal but his blunt honesty caused him to be banished and disgraced. Kaede manipulated the two sons to exact revenge on the old man who massacred her family. Come to think of it, the old man's 3 daughters-in-law all belonged to three noble families that he destroyed and annihilated.

I feel like this kind of filmmaker is dead forever. The brilliant expressionistic art direction. The astounding ambition and commitment to vision. Itnresulted in a truly and inexplicably breathtaking work of art. Every frame of this movie is brilliant - beautiful, interesting, and perfect. Each one is worthy of framing.
