A playthrough of Konami's 1989 action game for the Nintendo Famicom, Akumajou Densetsu (悪魔城伝説).
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse was one of my favorite NES games way back when it debuted in the fall of 1990. But, like I'd imagine was the same for many kids at the time, I had no idea that the American game was a somewhat neutered version of the original Japanese one.
In this video I am playing the Japanese game with an English patch applied. If you're interested in trying it out for yourself, you can find the patch at www.romhacking.net/translatio...
I've already done a video for the US version ( • Castlevania III: Dracu... ), but I thought the Japanese version was worth a look given the differences. Akumajou Densetsu's use of Konami's custom VRC6 chip gives the game's audio a major kick in the pants by providing the system with three additional sound channels (2 square waves, 1 saw). The Japanese version is also the "uncensored" version. The other releases cover up any instances of nudity, though somehow a whole lot of religious iconography still remains intact.
In this playthrough of the game I teamed up with Sypha. I thought it was a good match for the story in the Netflix show.

It's nice to see the correctly-translated prologue text and compare it with its counterpart in the western release. You know, the one which told us that Dracula was a person who wanted to create a bad world filled with evil, and intended to do so by taking over the city of Europe.

@@Juuhazan_ I dont agree. Trevor sounds like a name for a guy who is into tattooing. Ralph is the type of guy who has a portable CD player Ralph is the guy who does his homework. Ralph is the guy who has a good home work environment. Ralph is the guy who is helpful. The only problem is those weird artwork for him in later installments. Where he looks masculine and normal in Famicom or NES counterpart.

I finally played this version on that Castlevania compilation a few years back and I think the challenge is just right for most. Whereas Castlevania III in the US was too difficult and Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon felt like a way too easy spiritual sequel, this gets it right in the middle.

What is nice (easier) about this Japanese release is that the Cyclops (before choosing broken-translated partner name aside), who charges at you in the American version, just only throws his hammer down and walks away like a broken Thor.

The NES, while not as powerful as the Master System, was definitely capable of some great graphics and sounds. Companies like Capcom, Konami and Sunsoft were the three that really understood how to max out the performance of the console outside of Nintendo themselves. Games like Castlevania III still look and sound good today in my eyes, and it really shows the dedication these programming teams had.

Nintendo had quite the developers inteligence at their side, people with pure passion, that can overcome any obstacle. I'm not saying the Master System didn't have that though, but when you set both sides together, there's this difference quality that goes, in my opinion, undoubtly for nintendo

Much like Famicom Contra, this version of Castlevania III is superior to what we got here in the states. And you’re right, Alex, the VRC6 is the star of the show here for the iconic soundtrack on display. Many tracks of which have been lovingly rearranged in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. 👏🏼😌

I gave this game a try a few months ago after I had watched a few videos of it and become curious (it looked like the original "Castlevania", and I always liked that game a lot), and I was really surprised when I heard the music; it turned out that I had got the Japanese version, and I found out that that version had a much richer sound, and I immediately enjoyed that sound a lot. I spent like 5-6 hours with the game with only a few small breaks, and beat it in one day.

I prefer the Japanese Famicom version over the NES version, not just because of the enhanced sound, but also because the Famicom version has less BS moments (such as getting sent back farther when losing to Dracula), Grant's ability to throw infinite daggers without costing you any hearts, and being an easier game than the US version while still remaining a challenging game. It's similar to Ninja Ryukenden III on the Famicom, in which that version is also slightly easier than the NES Ninja Gaiden III while still being a challenge.

A great game. the japanese version is a lot more fair in difficulty and the sound is way better. In the american version has a few extras codes like Help Me that gives you 10 lives and in the second run new enemies appear. Both versions are great and you can't go wrong with them.

Correct, and good point. I was disappointed that HELP ME does not give you 8 more lives in the Japanese version. Entering the character names to start with them does not work either, not that I ever knew that in my youth. Then again, the Internet did not exist, but the point is moot.

His name is read as "Belumondo" in the Japanese version. The L-sound in Japanese is a so-called "alveloar flap", where you pronounce the L-sound by kinda resting your tongue on the gum ridge and then pulling your tongue back, and that sound is somewhere between an L and an R, and this is why English spellings of Japanese names often mix up those letters.

Nintendo didn't allow third-parties to manufacture their own cartridges for the US, so the game had to be adapted to one of Nintendo's own expansion chips. I know this will upset some, but to me the soundchip used here is not that impressive. Compared to the US release, the soundtrack sounds different sure, but I will not call it better, just different. That may be because the VRC6 didn't give that "16 bit" feel that other Japanese Famicom games have, like Lagrange Point or Gimmick!.

Lagrange Point is so underrated. I loved the music as a kid.

I thought it was impressive for how much depth it gave to the music. Doubling the number of melodic channels and introducing a new waveform allowed for more complexity in the compositions. Imo it sounds closer to a TurboGrafx game than an NES one (even though the VRC6 couldn't touch the TG16's sound hardware).
