A Rhodesian ex-soldier who was with Portuguese soldiers in Tete Province (Mozambique) during joint patrols against Frelimo/Zanla insurgents (1971/72) desctibes Portuguese as being “ casual with their G3’s across their shouders held by the barrel, who would immediatly charge forward shouting abuse at the enemy as soon as contact was made “ He also stated that Rhodesians felt comfortable working with the Portuguese. In the book “The Rhodesian War” the author also claims that to most Rhodesians “ there was nothing wrong with the Portuguese fighting spirit .” Ron Reid Daly founder of the famous Selous Scouts in his book states that in April 1974, the Portuguese were far from loosing the war. Finally, Breytenbach, founder of Three Two Batallion, expresses his real admiration for his Portuguese troopies when they joined him in his Angolan 1977 adventure known as Bravo Group. Sadly most were killed in that adventure. One was a man from Tras os Montes. He was awarded the highest South African cross of honour for his courage during the battle of Bridge 14, when he single handed “dispached” a few Cubans and Faplas to Heaven. His name: Daniel Roxo.

My biggest heroes outside are the Portuguese, funnily enough, because they were my one little reserve, I had one company of light troops from Portugal, Britain's oldest ally, who did a hell of a lot of things that made a lot of difference, particularly in Farah province in a very demanding side shoot or offshoot of what was happening in the South.

Britain backstabbed Portugal giving the Congo to the king of Belgium, a country that had never set a foot in Africa, despite the fact the Portuguese were present there since centuries Britain backstabbed Portugal after the first World War, not giving Portugal any territorial compensation for its intervention in the war - Brits are trained to think and act like traitors...

@@robinv1485 Even back then, you can't even compare the atrocities committed by colonial powers with the Portuguese way of being. 500 years later and we're still celebrated in Nagasaki, Malaysia, the Philipines, East-timor, Angola, Cape-Verde, Mozambique, Brazil and Sri-lanka, while it's unanimous among them that the Spanish were brutal opressors, the Brits were exploitative, the Dutch we're Barbaric and the Belgian Monstruous. One tiny law made all the difference, Portuguese sailors that married a local gal and settled where she was from, would be exempt from paying taxes to the crown while being allowed to trade and develop their factories under Royal protection. So the Portuguese married Africans, Hindus, Japanese, Philipinas and Malayans, you get the point. If you don't then I am sorry to say, you have fallen for post-sebastian Anti-Portuguese Anglophonic propaganda.

It's a kind of "tradition" sir. "We don't like violent measures but when we going to it our foes only can expecting the worst" That's why, almost all our former enemies look to us to as a friend today. "-Don't up set the Portugueses. We don't more troubles than we already have now" they usually to say. We only are bad to choose our politicians.

@@Luzitanium Point being, it is not the UN who’s directing compliments towards the Lusofolk, at least not in this interview. Personally speaking, I wouldn’t regard myself as a fan of the United Nations. Although despite of the natural correlations to it, and as previously mentioned in the description, the flattering recognition for the portuguese performance is well earned.

@@Luzitanium You keep conflating subjects & persisting on a point I never argued against. I’m addressing the gentleman who was interviewed, the remarks that were made by him specifically, not the United Nations nor what led the Portuguese reaction force to the C.A.R. years ago. No need to become overly defensive, even less so over something no one is disagreeing with you about. Best we resume this dialogue, thank you. Edit: spelling correction.

Greetings. Let’s see, General Sir David Richards, who’s the former head of the British army, who has worked internationally with troops from all over the world for several decades, rated the Portuguese units then based in Afghanistan as his own best troops, but somehow that is not quite enough for Mr. Nobody Yosiah Ben Israel, the head of international stupidity on KZfaq.
