In 1147, Afonso I, King of Portugal, "the Conqueror", achieved the greatest victory of his career, the capture of Lisbon. He was aided by groups of Flemish, French, German, Norman, and English Crusaders on their way to the Holy Land during the Second Crusade. Thus the Siege of Lisbon constitutes a great victory of the Second Crusade, as opposed to its failures in the Holy Land.
