I was site manager of an outdoor venue near St. Louis when Al came there for a show in 1979. Our secretary was in the office with staff coming and going. She was a huge fan of his (as are many, myself included) but she couldn't get away to go watch even one song. After the show I explained how much he meant to her and how her lyrics inspired her. I told him she could not come down and asked if he would go visit her. He rode with me on the golf cart 1/2 a mile to the office. Signed a picture which I took in and handed her and she was so thrilled and in tears. Then he knocked on the door and came in. She lost it. He said hello, shook her had, kissed her cheek as he was leaving and even sang a couple of verses to her. That is the kind of man Al Jarreau was. Renita Fowler, I hope you are still with us and well.

In the late 80's, my father use to play this every single morning for me while he drove me to school. Then we listened to a mixture of Al Jarreau and Anita Baker. I was infatuated with their voices and their scatting talents. God, I wish Black music with a soul and positivity still existed today. But I'll always have the 80's

Al Jarreau was an angel incarnate. God bless his soul! This song may have saved my life at a a critical time when I had lost everything and had no hope left. I am a man but am weeping now listening to this and watching the video for the first time. It's almost too much. God bless this wonderful man. God bless all who have faith and see the beauty in life.

@Will Rich Al Jarreau was celebrated . However their was a time in the music industry when his music was not appreciated by industry people and didn't promote his music here in the U. S. He was always celebrated & appreciated all over other parts of the world. If you know anything about music industry in the U.S. Then you know how fickle it is it's all about what they think sells&Labels & Marketing. Al Jarreau maintained his following of fans. The music industry tried to put him in a box here. That's what's I meant by underrated I was speaking from an industry perspective! Hope that clarifies it for you. Peace!

This song means a lot to me and I recognize in it how someone feels after being in a dark place but then realizing they made it through to see another day. Lyrics like "Morning mr golden gate.." and "I was shakin but now I am makin it fine, in my mind." We have dark dark days and feel like ending it all is the answer but the blue sky is even sweeter when we can just hold on and let the darkness pass.

There are many singers, but only a fraction of them use their voices as musical instruments, and only a fraction of those achieve the level of virtuoso - and Mr. Jarreau was in that latter fraction. He proved with this track that he was the preeminent voice of modern pop jazz in the 1980s. I was in high school when this track was released as a single; I'd heard other jazz tracks beforehand, but I didn't really have a clue about jazz as a musical genre until I heard this track.

+cattybound2011 Dear Catty, perhaps they didn't dislike this (beautiful) song per se, may be some of those dislikes come from very far back away in time, when that song was playing, and they had some serious and bitter moments in their existences, one never knows. I can say this because I was one of those tormented souls in those distant times and I used to relate it to many hardships I was going through, the difference is I overcame it, and today I love it.

I had never listened to AL before outside of the amazing McDonalds commercial he did with the amazing Vesta Williams (RIP) in the 90s but I have to say this is one of the best songs I've ever heard! There's something very special about a lot of the music made between 1977 and 1984...it's like all the songs (especially R&B) have a beautiful, laid back type of melody that just brightens up your day and I say this as a late 80s baby! I'm going to have to check out more of Al's stuff. I'm never bored with artists from the early 2000s on back...true talent! ❤
