As an American, with lots of Scots, Welsh, and some English relatives, I can say with great certitude that the best of British comedy is flatly offensive at a number of levels-by design. If it doesn't kick a sacred cow, trample over some tradition, and involve some serious word play, then it isn't good British comedy. Love it!

You have it precisely. Once you grasp that, you will love it. SATIRE, didn't just appear in the 1960's, it goes back centuries, with cartoonists like James Gillray and William Hogarth etc So vicious that the Royals tried to get them imprisoned.

Exactly! You nailed it. A big part of British humour is poking fun at ourselves, which this character is all about. But he uses the nature of the character to poke fun at just about everybody else too. It's a cleverly created double-edged sword which many don't recognise.

I'd also liked to have seen Neil who definitely got offended as he started answering back and Al shut him down with 'back off' followed by his usual "you're beautiful people". If you watch the full act the God save the queen part, the guy was a musician, pianist I believe and he'd had some banter with him earlier. What amazes me with Al is how he picks random people out of the audience and remembers their names and occupations then comes back to them some time later and manages to include them in his act, quality stuff, he's also a very smart guy.

There was a comedian in the sixties and seventies in Britain called Warren Mitchell who played a character called Alf Garnett who was a patriotic British racist. Seen this clip before, but the delight in watching it was multiplied by the sheer exuberance and fun you displayed. Offence is subjective in many ways and, often, the offence is with the viewer: the comedian (in this case) does not cause offence, the viewer takes offence. That said, there are some comedians that I find offensive from time to time and those are usually the ones who toss out various -phobic and -ist slurs in a deliberate attempt to create a shock. You seem to have captured the essence of the act (emphasis on the word 'act') where he mocks all and sundry, but especially himself and his nation and manages to squeeze a few thought provoking comments in amidst the laughs.

Utterly setain in their own ignorance, and Al plays that stereotype perfectly. He also does it with inciteful wit and humour, that is soaked with the subtle British art of "taking the piss", while on the surface spouting the obvious nonesense that you can here in most British pubs. Al himself is erudite, cultured, intelligent, and educated with a particular interest in history. Hi serious work is well worth a watch. I particularly enjoyed "Al Murray's Road to Berlin" series. 🙃 Sorry I hate doing an addendum to a subject I have already spoke on. But... Every thing Murray had fun with, I knew. I don't know how school study is done now. But also back then, it was drilled into our heads or you did not move on to the next grade. And that was supported by our parents. Many nights 3am still at the table being asked by my Mom, questions on the subject. I hated it. But guess what? I did not know that way down the road I would use all that so called crap subjects in my many travels around the world with the jobs and firms I have worked of as an engineer. I am retired now and blessed I am still around to witness the sad change in education. You my friend are not the norm. Your that kid living outside the box and loving the journey. Thank You.

A great insight shown by you, and a really good summary at the end. It may seem at first glance that he is poking fun at Americans, but he is also poking an equal amount of fun at the British with his 'pub landlord' sterotype that we are all familiar with in the UK. Great reaction!

He doesn't poke fun at the British as a whole, he only makes fun of poor people, or poorer than himself anyway

He represents a pub landlord that’s had far too many beers and is verbalising bullshit to his mates, it’s not to be taken seriously. Excellent comedy 😂😂😂

Hi, seen your channel for the first time. Enjoyed your reaction, and great to see you understand Al Murray's character, and this type of humour. I can recommend Al Murray explains 'How Global Finance Really Works'- it's hilarious!

You are amazing, I love that you get irony, which is pretty much the foundation of a lot of British humour. Check out his global finance or Al Murray explains the euro crisis next or watch the whole of his set at the O2. When you watch the clips you miss the rest of the banter and interaction he has with the audience. He’s very clever in the way that he threads a loose plot of jokes in with the other members of the audience.

This is one of Al's best, love watching it, again and again, but you just gave the best reaction i've ever seen, its my first time watching you, so not sure what you've already reacted to, so i recommend Mock the Week, specifically, scenes we'd like to see Also Gun Control pts 1&2 by Jim Jefferies....I've hit the like button and subscribed so i can see that awesome smile, that literally lights up your face

You have a very sensible and commonsense view of this video and took it for what it was without taking it too seriously and therefore was able to enjoy it for what it is. I think Al Murray would like you because, like us Brits, you have a sensible down to earth approach to life. 😂😉👍

Nice to see someone who ''gets'' Al Murray, one of the UK's finest comedians. You are right, Al Murray as ''The Pub Landlord'' is a stereotypical Englishman who, thank goodness, we are seeing less and less of. He shouts, is bombastic and immune to reason whilst, at the same time - and this is his genius - backing up his argument with an unassailable hilarious logic. When Brits watch Al Murray, they are laughing at themselves. Al Murray is showing up our own prejudices. It is also worth noting that, in reality, the man Al Murray is a well-versed and learned man with degrees to prove it. Out of character he is a pleasure to listen to. He has made at least one documentary series ''The Road to Berlin'' which explores the Allies advance to Nazi Germany in World War 2. He included interviews from veterans of all the armies and, at times, it was very affecting. Long may he continue and glad you enjoyed it.

I'm 54 and I remember learning the words to the national anthem ('dirge' would be more appropriate) at primary school, along with songs like, "There'll always be an England" and other such jingoistic tosh.

The point about picking on “Steve” for the National Anthem was that Steve was a member of the Sex Pistols, who had a hit with a punk version of “God Save the Queen”!!

@@NoProtocol I concur with the Stewart Lee recommendations. He is a comedian although left leaning plays with that and likes breaking the fourth wall and deconstructing the comedians work. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l5dnl9iFurGaoas.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jtFzdct82JrKkX0.html and the braveheart sketch kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qq5xZNiX0rK-gY0.html now this was sketch if i recall was record in Scotland and the way he plays with pride of heroes and pulls the rug ...

I have now watched a few Americans commenting on British-based humour and other matters, and you are the only one who adds value. Well done. Have a look at Katherine Tate, playing 'Nan' and/or 'Lauren'. Examples are Nan - Anger management, and Lauren's New English teacher.
