You're pretty much right about everything. George wasn't telling jokes this time around, he's had heart trouble most of his life. He'd gone thru 3-4 heart attacks by this point and you can tell by comparing him in this video to others that he wasn't doing too good here. This was his last HBO special and in my opinion I think he knew he didn't have much time left so he kept the joking to a minimum and just went out and said everything he felt he needed to say. Within a few months of the special airing he was gone. RIP my friend, we miss you George. Peace

I am a teacher, so I can tell you that what George says is completely accurate. And the major problem with education, not only in the US but in many places, is that the educational system, in general, is designed to kill creativity and imagination, which with a few exceptions, it really accomplishes. Real education is much simpler than everybody imagines, and at the very beginning, it consists only in letting children be children and discover the world around them by themselves, with teachers as facilitators. Education, in that sense, must teach children HOW to think, not WHAT to think. All that is taught in the twelve or so years that children spend in school could be taught in one year, when they're starting to decide what they want to pursuit as a profession, that's it! The rest is a waste of time and has the purpose of controlling and taming by killing critical thinking, nothing more.

Love your observation on education versus intelligence. I wasn't surprised when I saw a chart showing how over the last three decades the amount of money going to schools has gone up in proportion to how much grades/test scores have gone down. I watched my son and grand kids going through school and none of them were challenged in school. For two of them it was to easy and they got bored and stopped trying, then barely passed. I feel for the students in school now, low discipline, lower standards and the three basics are for the most part skipped over.

One thing i have learned from watching Your videos is that the world can never. get enough of bright young people like You. Keep the videos coming. The world needs to hear your voice. Greetings from Norway...who basically is "daisy chained" to the Us.

Having a mother with the time to make a kid read and to instill discipline and empathy is the golden path to education. Parents who take responsability for the education of their kids may live in less luxery than their neighbors as the live off of one income, but they've made their children's enheritance richer than they could have off two incomes.

Personally this was my problem back in school. I didn't learn the same as everybody else and thus I failed. I couldn't understand things we're learning as easily and as far as the state was concerned I was an idiot. And to be fair I am likely an idiot in some regards. But I learned what I wanted to learn and I can possibly use that information. The school system in my opinion is very broken. And it's not just on the learning, it's also on the interactive end as well.

Carlin developed his voice in the post-Vietnam hippie era, where skepticism towards the deeds of the government was becoming a standard for many critical-thinking Americans. As he aged and the Internet was becoming more popular, pop culture exploded and became far more corporate. I explain this to make the point that much of the comedic aspect of George's later material is that basic critical thinking abilities had declined to the extent where people just regurgitate talking points and consume vain, pointless culture, just accepting everything at face value. The comedy is that he talks about things that should be common sense, but people began to prefer having their perspectives already articulated for them. He's not angry at people, he's disappointed that everything is taken at face value when it should be questioned. However, the skeptical voice tends to be silenced/obsfugated.

What's crazy is that we are still using the same teaching methods we were using in the 1950s. Rote learning is a perfect description. Forcing these kids to memorize and regurgitate (mostly) useless facts that they will quickly forget. The difference is that this method was not nearly as harmful back then. A boy could finish high school and immediately secure a job in a factory that would afford him the ability to not only support himself, but a stay at home wife and several children. That America does not exist anymore. It hasn't for decades. All those jobs were shipped overseas and replaced by trash like WalMart, fast food, etc, jobs", wage slavery. What we should be teaching in schools are things like money management (an obscene number of Americans are financially illiterate and have no financial self control) and critical thinking skills- logic, reason, how to construct a syllogism, or a sound, valid argument, how to spot fallacies, how to evaluate truth claims and what constitutes a reasonable standard of evidence.The Socratic teaching method should be introduced in all high schools. I didn't truly learn critical thought until I hit college. Which is sad and ridiculous.

Great erudite commentary. I forgot how George Carlin was so unique in his social and wide-scale perspectives. From an Australian view, it is heartening to know that there are real Americans with soundly developed, academically formed views, who wisely, yet simple, say how it is.

The classes I enjoyed the most in high school were the ones that kept us engaged. Teachers you could tell who actually cares, encouraged debate and opinions. Unfortunately, most of the classes were just memorizing. No real thought requires, if you can read and write and memorize, you can pass just fine, and even as a teen I was starting to see the cracks in this society and school was what bothered me the most back then. I actually like learning, and most of the classes were just so damn boring. I wondered why adults thought that these "slacker" kids and failing students would take an interest when I could barely do so. I could tell right away these kids weren't stupid, but a lot of the teachers treated them that way. From what I hear, not much has changed. (I was in high school during mid 2000s)

I am speaking as an American, he is confirming everything I have discovered over the years. This motivates me to continue to help my fellow countrymen. To stand up for what is right.

It took me till my early 20s to break away from just the memory and repetition since that's all I needed since HS. To truly understand the process of whatever you are studying and not just some vocabulary that fills in a sentence of definition.

I agree with you about the school system. I am from switzerland and they are very proud of the educational opportunities here. But no learning methods are taught in schools. Remembering something for a test is not real learning. I myself only found access to knowledge after my school days through coaching seminars, which made brain research and psychology the basis for learning methods.

When looking at school for my own kids I talked to a lot of teachers and different systems. The most surprising was 2 private schools and 2 homeschool educators that all teach via the Unschool method where they function as facilitators rather than teachers. And these kids regularly go on to great accomplishments. My own kids have barely ever set foot in a public school yet outperform all of their public school friends. It's the information age, ignorance is a choice.

Yeah when I joined the military as an enlisted and started interacting with officers, I learned that a higher education does not always equate to applicable smarts. And most geopolitical wars are always started by the educated, so much for learning history.

George Carlin is always on point and most of his pieces are as true today as then. You should definitely do more of his videos! The most acurate thing he brought up was the lowering of the standards.I'll see it with young collegues at work as well as with my nephews in school that this is happening. theres a comedian named Steve Hughes thats great, he reminds me a little bit of George Carlin with the topics he tackles aswell as Rustle Brand with the way he talks sometimes and the little rants he has, his stuff about safety is hilarious.

It's been a few days since I discovered your channel and I have to say it's easily becoming one of my favourite. Critical thinking and experimenting different ideas, maybe challenging ones is such a healthy thing we should all do to hope build a better society, and it is sad to say that your channel is sadly only an oasis in what seems like a big desert of culture and curiosity. Born in 65. Education has gone from bad to worse. I've seen tons of courses and programs cut out of my schools. I've seen the grading scale lowered years after I left high school. I've read about GRE scores dropping over the, years. Kids are just pushed through. Really sad.

I enjoy your critical thinking. I knew a man who had a photographic memory, I said that must have been handy at school, he said "You'd think, but apparently knowing something and understanding something are two different things."

Thank you actually proving links to these valuable resources. A lot of videos mention the problems without providing actual solutions. That is of course also important but your video provides so much more. I believe MIT has the philosophy that knowledge and edication has to be available for everyone. So most of their courses are free... I would highly recommend them as well.

I am so glad to hear you mention Khan Academy. I sometimes feel like nobody knows about that. I can't speak for all schools or teachers, but mine at least made a habit of asking me how I knew the answers I gave. I was encouraged to have reasoning when I came up with an answer.

My father never failed to impress upon me the old adage about the reason to attend college. You don't go to college to learn what to think, but how to think. Like Carlin so eloquently states in this bit, we've been conditioned to accept many things as truisms, and the further we move on that timeline, the more we take for granted without ever bothering to assess whether such things are accurate. It doesn't take a conspiracy to stand by and watch education diminish. All it takes is standing by and watching, maybe a few tweaks or budget adjustments here and there...subtle shifts of standards or requirements. But the main premise-the goal of creating "obedient workers"- is manifest all around us. It's plain to see in simplistic attitudes that we would oppose fellow citizens being given some helping hand, yet all too willing to start and fund more military operations all over the world. If you want a vibrant, responsible, thriving society, it takes collective investment. What we put in, we get out. The "owners" have no vested interest in such a plodding and messy plan of action. Their strongest yield stems from simply extracting such wealth from people who don't know any better.

I always enjoy watching you. You're very intelligent and articulate. As a former teacher, I can honestly say that I never did it for the income...I did it for the outcome. Einstein never spoke a word until he was 4 or 5 years old. People thought he was slow. As they say, never judge a book by its' cover. Keep up the good work and always keep an open mind but not so open that your brains fall out!

He stresses the importance of critical thinking, understanding, and thinking for yourself, and conversely, the dangers of certainty and the standardization of education. Great channel by the way.

When I was in sixth grade, in the 1960s, there was a teacher who taught me two of the, I feel, most important lessons in life. Figures don't lie but liars figure and not believe everything I read or see on TV. I was not the best academic student and maybe I'm naturally suspicious, but I think she was instrumental in my becoming an analytical critical thinker. I have the impression that in those days they spent more time teaching us how instead of what to think.

Your lack of financial education point is spot on. I've had many conversations with friends about that exact point.

I grew up on George Carlin and Richard Pryor. George was a bit nasty but, spoke truth. He's warned us for years and only got laughs while people let it go in 1 ear and out the other.

New subscriber here i just found your channel and i am glad i did . Your commentary is outstanding.

6th grade, test taken, teacher announced to the class, "The test you all took last week was graded on a curve that was intended to allow more of you to pass but one person scored so high that everyone else got no benefit from the curve and so he was the only one that passes and all of you must RETAKE IT, unless we Drop His score, then the curve will let you all pass. What do you all think raise your hands if you want to retake the test." The teacher looked at him and said "Everyone else thinks we should drop your score. What do you say?.." He had been standing in front of the class for the announcement glaring at the teacher almost since she began the announcement. Everyone was looking at him as his eyes swep across the room and then glaring into the teachers grin he growled "Whatever, i don't care." The teacher thanked him and told him to sit down and... I enjoy the memory and decided to share it.

As a teacher, it’s so sad seeing my kids and their get mad at me for having standards. Like no I’m not gonna pass you until you fix the mistakes on your exam, just like I’m not gonna have kids backsass me and break stuff in my classroom. ADD is used as scapegoat when these kids just need to be disciplined a little

What you said at the end of this video is something that was addressed in the movie Se7en. It was a scene where a character was in a library at night to do research, and he sees security guards sitting together and he says something along the lines of "you spend every day around all the knowledge of the world, and sit up all night playing cards". (That's not an exact quote, but it's been many years since I saw that movie.) In today's age, we could talk about how people could spend time educating themselves. We have the internet. We have resources. Yet, all most people do in their time is put their heads under the rock called "Social Media". Rather than be productive and read something new and learn, they choose to surf Facebook and Instagram and Twitter and get into arguments as pseudo-intellectuals, subjects ripe to prove the Dunning-Kruger effect to be true. (BTW, I do know that I personally know very little about D-K; I did that sentence as a bit of humorous irony of trying to exemplify one of those pseudo-intellectuals. I realize tone/inflection doesn't come across the internet, sadly...) Definitely enjoy your reactions to Carlin and I love your analysis! Nobody in today's world matches Carlin because of fear of "cancellation" from Twitter; only Chappelle comes close to the level of social commentary and thought provocation that Carlin did.
